Book excerpt: L2 Motivation has evolved since Gardner and Lambert introduced the socio-educational model and highlighted the importance of attitudes and affect to the SLA process. Though the field expanded focus, little work has been done into L2 teacher motivation; instead, most studies have focused on student attitudes and motivation. This research addressed that need by examining teaching motivation in Saudi Arabia. This study explored the effects that living in Saudi Arabia, segregated from the host community by a high level of social distance, has on teachers' attitudes and motivation to teach, by asking four questions:Do EFL teachers in Saudi feel isolated from the host culture?Do teachers acculturate to Saudi society?How do EFL teachers in Saudi Arabia percieve the social distance between students and teachers?If teachers feel a great cultural distance, what effect does this have on foreign teachers' attitudes towards their students? What effect does this have on the teachers' motivation? A qualitative design was deemed most appropriate. Operating in the exploratory-interpretive paradigm, it aimed to discover meaning as the participants interpreted it. Both the phenomenological orientation of understanding the essence of lived experiences and the ethnographic orientation of exploring shared behaviors, beliefs, and language were used. Eleven English teachers, who shared a contextual location and a few characteristics, were purposefully selected to participate in two semi-structured interviews, which were intended to elicit meaningful and culturally relevant responses, and provide unanticipated information. The interviews revealed the following: money was the teachers' primary motivation for working in Saudi Arabia; most teachers arrived wanting to learn Arabic; social distance prevented cultural experiences; the subjects reported low levels of job satisfaction and commitment; and the subjects were more motivated by extrinsic than intrinsic work factors. These results contribute to an understanding of L2 teacher motivation and raise further questions about the role of foreign EFL teachers in Saudi Arabia. Limitations of the study and suggestions for further research were identified. .

This study focused on Saudi EFL teachers’ perspectives and attitudes toward using songs in their language classrooms and how using songs helped transform their classrooms into constructivist classrooms. This research was a qualitative case study, and the participants consisted of a purposeful homogeneous selection of 10 Saudi EFL elementary school teachers. Data was collected using online interviews. The findings revealed that Saudi EFL teachers in elementary schools used songs in their language classrooms as a subordinate activity, used repetition drills and discussions with songs, and followed the teacher’s manual when using songs. Analysis of the data also showed the Saudi EFL teachers have positive perspectives and attitudes toward using songs in their language classrooms. Results showed that the participants considered songs as a significant tool to enhance constructivism. Several barriers were identified for using songs as a pedagogical tool to enhance constructivism such as teachers’ lack of knowledge, students’ age, and cultural backgrounds of the Saudi EFL elementary school teachers.

For this reason, there is a strong need to research and estimate the perception of technology use within educational processes and how technology can support learning.As an outcome of recent educational reforms in Saudi Arabia, technology has become imperative element to support learning. It was previously thought in Saudi Arabia that technology was not crucial to learning; however, modern education that does not make use of digital technology is at a decided disadvantage. Moreover, engagement with technology is now an important factor in the teaching and learning process. This research investigated English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' use of technology to support learning, willingness to use technology to support learning and their perceptions of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and its usefulness in their teaching.After a small pilot study helped shape the methodology to be used, a mixed method approach was adopted using a larger pool of participants. This methodology combined elements of quantitative and qualitative research approaches such as online survey and interviews. Explanatory sequential design, based on quantitative and qualitative data, conducted to find out teachers perceptions, factors and relationships related to technology implementation.Despite willingness to use technology tools that promote the learning process, the actual level of technology use in the classroom can be quite varied. The participating EFL teachers, who generally lacked sufficient skills and experience in technology, had a reduced use of technology in learning processes. However, EFL teachers working in technical colleges in Saudi Arabia were willing to use technology to support learning, as they were more proficiently skilled. They demonstrated extensive willingness to implement technology in the EFL classroom.This study found that EFL teachers' use of technology is positively associated with their perceptions of willingness to use that technology and with the perceptions of TPACK they employ as a way of understanding its pedagogical use. The study also found that the technology supported effective strategies for learning EFL. Despite the validation that the TPACK framework was not supported by factor analysis, the perception of TPACK of EFL teachers in Saudi Arabia was enough to develop a relevant understanding of the fundamental role of technology in the teaching process. Moreover, EFL teachers with extensive experience in practising English language in a Western society had a significantly higher perception of TPACK than teachers lacking such experience. There was an inconsistent relationship between EFL teachers' TPK, TCK and PCK and their perception of TPACK framework. However, EFL teachers usually considered their perception of TPACK sufficient to conduct different teaching experiments in the EFL classroom.

Understanding EFL teachers' attitudes about creativity would provide valuable insights into their practices in the classroom and facilitate the planning and evaluation efforts to promote creativity in classrooms. Using a validated survey instrument adapted from Alqahtani (2016), the researcher collected attitudes toward creativity among 85 female Saudi EFL teachers. The study found that the participating teachers tended to hold process-oriented definitions of creativity, had positive attitudes towards creativity, and viewed themselves as using creative methods. However, they lacked certainty about the definition of creativity and were not confident in their application of creative methods. The implications of these findings in light of the research are discussed in greater detail.

The main purpose of this study was to examine attitudes of Saudi Arabian K-12 education teachers toward inclusion and to determine whether the professional development programs currently offered in Saudi Arabia change or impact teacher attitudes toward inclusion. The researcher conducted a qualitative study utilizing semi-structured interviews with K-12 education teachers in Saudi Arabia to examine their attitudes and perspectives on inclusion and related assessment/instruction as well as how participation in professional development opportunities may impact or change their attitudes toward inclusion. Six themes emerged from the interviews: (a) different interpretations of inclusion, (b) professional development program, (c) perception of the need for accommodations and modifications, (d) assessment and instruction, (e) parents' impact on teachers' attitudes, and (g) recommendation to improve inclusive practices. Subsequently, 13 sub-themes emerged from the interviews, including: (a) the type of professional development program, (b) the outcomes of the professional development program, (c) the need for instruction and assessment, and (d) the need for professional development on instruction and assessment. Implications for improving inclusion, professional development programs, as well as instruction and assessment are included. Based on the results, several recommendations for practice and future research are suggested.

Book excerpt: This study has been undertaken using an interpretive methodology in order to examine the socially constructed views of Saudi EFL teachers and their decision-making with regards to the appropriate cultural models for EFL textbooks in Saudi public schools. The study also examines the factors affecting the teachers' views and how they apply their beliefs in their classrooms. In addition, the study will also examine if the Saudi EFL teachers have any concerns about what they have been through and examined and accordingly investigates how they address their pedagogical decision-making in the classroom. Moreover, this study is interested in looking at EFL teachers as local teachers teaching a global language. In view of the exploratory nature of this study and its context-specificity, the naturalistic orientation of interpretive and social constructivism as an epistemological stance were selected. The research design employed a concurrent mixed methods design using an adapted version of Cress well (1996). In this study, the participants were Saudi Arabian EFL teachers from one city in Saudi Arabia teaching in all of the three public education levels (primary, intermediate and secondary). The data collected were both qualitative (interviews and open-ended questionnaires) and quantitative (close-ended questionnaires). For the interviews, 14 male and female teachers equally interviewed, whereas for the questionnaires 280 male and female participated. The data collection of both data qualitative and quantitative occurred at the same time during my field journey in 2009 in Saudi Arabia. I used the SPSS descriptive statistics for the analysing the quantitative data and used exploratory content analysis for the qualitative data. The study findings revealed that the Saudi EFL teachers were not satisfied with the cultural content currently promoted in the Textbooks as they inappropriately contradict the local cultural values. Thus, they believe that for a better cultural content, the textbooks should therefore include a mixture of different cultures that do not mismatch with the local. And as they are controlled by some educational and social factors, they are limited to practice what they think is appropriate to apply in the classroom, therefore, their decision-making in this regards to some extent are to be controlled. In addition, the findings of the current study revealed that the Saudi EFL teachers show their openness to other cultures based on their glocal position as local Saudis teaching a global language. The conclusion of the study has some suggestion and implications to improve the cultural content of the EFL textbooks as well as implications for the EFL teachers in general and their practices and decision-making with regards to the textbook. Furthermore, the study proposed a model for the appropriate EFL textbooks for each educational level and can be applied locally in the Saudi context and globally for other similar context around the world.

The findings indicated that most teachers have positive attitudes toward integrating culture into language teaching. The reasons behind these positive attitudes include, but are not limited to, the fact that culture can help learners improve their language skills, help students become tolerant toward others, and make them understand their own culture. The results showed that teachers include big C culture and little c culture when they refer to culture teaching in foreign language classes. A relationship exists between teachers opinions and their practices, i.e., teachers try to practice what they believe. The findings imply that teachers try to improve students intercultural competence by improving learners knowledge, skills, and attitudes by using different strategies and materials. However, teachers in the study faced some challenges when they tried to integrate culture into language teaching, such as insufficient class time and overcrowded classrooms..

Book excerpt: The Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia has recently updated the foreign language education policy (FLEP) lowering EFL exposure to first grade students. Such FLEP involves multiple stakeholders including school officials, teachers, and parents. The present study explores Saudi parents0́9 and children0́9s attitudes and ideologies towards the new state policy. Knowing parents expectations and attitudes could diminish the challenges that could arise along way and ultimately assist in the success of FLEP. A mixed method approach was embraced as 113 parents responded to a questionnaire and 6 participants volunteered to be part of semi- structed interviews. Only parents who had first grade children were eligible for the study. The questionnaire included twelve items that falls under five categories. Multiple tests and analysis were employed including factor analysis was repeated measure ANOVA. The semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom and were transcribed and verified by participants. An inductive thematic analysis were used to elicit parents attitudes and insight towards the FLEP. The quantitative results revealed three emerging factors 1) teaching quality, 2) language ideologies and identities, 3) usefulness of English and indicated a significant difference among participants0́9 responses across the three factors. Results showed that Saudi parents mostly hold positive attitudes towards the recent initiated policy. The qualitative thematic data analysis revealed five emerging themes. The findings mostly aligned with quantitative results and thoroughly explained parents beliefs towards the recent FLEP. This study adds to the existing body of research on FLEP and advance it by offering evidence of the significant role of parents0́9 beliefs and attitudes as considering them could raise the potential of having effective and successful FLEP.

Many of these conquered people surrendered to Muslim domination under a special treaty called dhimma in Arabic. As such these non-Muslim indigenous populations, mainly Christians and Jews, were then classified under Islamic law as dhimmis (meaning "protected"). Although protected status may sound benign, this classification in fact referred to "protection" from the resumption of the jihad against non-Muslims, pending their adherence to a system of legal and financial oppression, as well as social isolation.
