His political career has been as brilliant as it has been significant. No public man has shown such foresight and courage, sacli firm convictions and such fidelity to the Republican ideal as Francis de Pressense, whose name stands out among those who at times of crisis have been found in the foremost ranks of the fighters. Francis de Pressense was born on September 30th, 1853. The son of Edmond de Pressense, Protestant pastor and politician, and of Madame Elise Francoise de Pressense, born du Plessis-Gouret, writer and poet, Francis de Pressense passed his childhood under the influence of two enlightened minds, and surrounded by tender and intelligent affection. His first studies were pursued at the Lycee Condorcet in Paris. He was sixteen and a half when the Franco-Prussian War broke out. He volunteered for service and went through the whole campaign. He was made prisoner at the battle of Alen on, and at seventeen he was recommended for the military medal and mentioned for bravery in the Army Order of the day. At the close of the war Francis de Pressense resumed his studies in the Faculties of Literature and Law in Paris. Having obtained his diplomas in these subjects, M. de Pressense entered the School of Political Science in 1874. Here he became remarkable for his extraordinary capacity. In a short time he had made a profound study of the political situation in all modern countries. He was then invited to enter the ranks of diplomacy, and was successively Secretary to the Embassy at Constantinople, Washington, and London. In 1888, having acquired a large amount of practical knowledge, he abandoned a diplomatic career and joined the staff of the great Paris paper Ls Temps as director of its foreign policy.
