Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synoptic-scale budgets of kinetic and total potential energy are computed using 3- and 6-h data at nine times from NASA's fourth Atmospheric Variability Experiment conducted on 24-25 April 1975. Two intense squall lines occurred during the period. Energy budgets for areas as small as 8.0 x 1011 m2 that enclose regions of intense convection are shown to have systematic changes that relate to the life cycles of the convection. Some of the synoptic-scale energy processes associated with the convection are found to be larger than those observed in the vicinity of mature cyclones. Volumes enclosing intense convection are found to have large values of cross-contour conversion of potential to kinetic energy and large horizontal export of kinetic energy. Although small net vertical transport of kinetic energy is observed, values at individual layers indicate large upward transport. Transfer of kinetic energy from grid to subgrid scales of motion occurs in the volumes. Latent heat release is large in the middle and upper troposphere and is thought to be the cause of the observed cyclic changes in the budget terms. Total potential energy is found to be imported horizontally in the lower half of the atmosphere, transported aloft, and then exported horizontally. Although local changes of kinetic energy and total potential energy are small, interaction between volumes enclosing convection with surrounding larger volumes is quite large. Spatial fields of terms in the energy budget equations are shown at three times. These have good continuity and are closely related to the locations and intensities of the two squall lines.

Book Synopsis Climate: Into the 21st Century by : World Meteorological Organization
Download or read book Climate: Into the 21st Century written by World Meteorological Organization and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate: Into the 21st Century features an unrivalled collection of essays by the world's leading meteorological experts. Compiled by an international team formed under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), these fully integrated contributions provide a perspective of the global climate system across the 20th century. The most arresting and extreme climatic events are described. In addition, the book traces the development of our capabilities to observe and monitor the climate system, and outlines our understanding of the predictability of climate on many time-scales. Lavishly illustrated in colour and written in an accessible and engaging style, this book provides a very readable account of the challenges that climate poses at the start of the 21st Century. It will captivate the general reader interested in climate issues, as well as forming a valuable teaching resource.

Book Synopsis Effects of Drought on Forests and Rangelands in the United States by : James M. Vose
Download or read book Effects of Drought on Forests and Rangelands in the United States written by James M. Vose and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment provides input to the reauthorized National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) and the National Climate Assessment (NCA), and it establishes the scientific foundation needed to manage for drought resilience and adaptation. Focal areas include drought characterization; drought impacts on forest processes and disturbances such as insect outbreaks and wildfire; and consequences for forest and rangeland values. Drought can be a severe natural disaster with substantial social and economic consequences. Drought becomes most obvious when large-scale changes are observed; however, even moderate drought can have long-lasting impacts on the structure and function of forests and rangelands without these obvious large-scale changes. Large, stand-level impacts of drought are already underway in the West, but all U.S. forests are vulnerable to drought. Drought-associated forest disturbances are expected to increase with climatic change. Management actions can either mitigate or exacerbate the effects of drought. A first principal for increasing resilience and adaptation is to avoid management actions that exacerbate the effects of current or future drought. Options to mitigate drought include altering structural or functional components of vegetation, minimizing drought-mediated disturbance such as wildfire or insect outbreaks, and managing for reliable flow of water.
