Book excerpt: Recent concerns over intentional and accidental releases of harmful material have motivated efforts to quantify turbulence statistics and concentration plume behavior within the urban environment. Turbulence and concentration measurements were obtained in water tunnel experiments conducted over urban-type roughness using particle image velocimetry and a micro-scale conductivity probe, respectively. Obstacle arrays consist of regular spaced roughness elements with height on the order of the boundary layer thickness. Building height to width aspect ratio ranges from one to three, and the plan area density is 0.19. Direct measurements of mean and turbulent velocities, including the Reynolds stress, and mean and fluctuating concentrations of a passive scalar released from a continuous point source are taken in the street canyon and the recirculating region of the building wake. This study presents analyses on both velocity and concentration measurements, including: shear layer characteristics; effective roughness; ground level concentration fluctuations; lateral and vertical concentration profiles; turbulence statistics and length scales; and dispersion measurements. The measurements, which are in accord with field studies, allow order of magnitude computations of dispersion based on simple urban geometries. The results suggest that the dispersion coefficient increases in the vertical direction by an order of magnitude between the ground level and the building height. Results also illustrate that the ground level dispersion coefficient is greater for cities with relatively shorter buildings.

This volume contains the papers and poster abstracts presented at the NATO/CCMS International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution Modelling and Its Application held in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, during 15-19 October 2001. This ITM was jointly organized by the University of Aveiro, Portugal (Pilot country) and by the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium (host country). The ITM was attended by 78 participants representing 26 countries from Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Africa. Urban Meteorology: Forecasting, Monitoring, and Meeting Users' Needs is based largely on the information provided at a Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate community workshop. This book describes the needs for end user communities, focusing in particular on needs that are not being met by current urban-level forecasting and monitoring. Urban Meteorology also describes current and emerging meteorological forecasting and monitoring capabilities that have had and will likely have the most impact on urban areas, some of which are not being utilized by the relevant end user communities. Urban Meteorology explains that users of urban meteorological information need high-quality information available in a wide variety of formats that foster its use and within time constraints set by users' decision processes. Climate change has emerged to be one of the biggest challenges faced by our planet today, threatening both built and natural systems with long-term consequences, which may be irreversible. While there is a vast body of literature on sustainability and sustainable urban development, there is currently limited focus on how to cohesively bring together the vital issues of the planning, development, and management of sustainable cities. Moreover, it has been widely stated that current practices and lifestyles cannot continue if we are to leave a healthy living planet to not only the next generation, but also to the generations beyond. The current global school strikes for climate action (known as Fridays for Future) evidences this. The book advocates the view that the focus needs to rest on ways in which our cities and industries can become green enough to avoid urban ecocide. This book fills a gap in the literature by bringing together issues related to the planning, development, and management of cities and focusing on a triple-bottom-line approach to sustainability.
