Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Book excerpt: A compilation of data collected and maintained for many years as the property of a large aluminum company, which decided in 1997 to make it available to other engineers and materials specialists. In tabular form, presents data on the tensile and creep properties of eight species of wrought alloys and five species of cast alloys in the various shapes used in applications. Then looks at the fatigue data for several alloys under a range of conditions and loads. The data represent the typical or average findings, and though some were developed years ago, the collection is the largest and most detailed available. There is no index.

Book excerpt: Its objective is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms involved in the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in metals in order to optimize the microstructure of high strength aluminum alloys for overall fatigue resistance. The research conducted during this year was divided into three tasks. Task I was concerned with the effects of slip character and grain size on the intrinsic material and extrinsic closure contributions to fatigue crack growth resistance of 7475. Special thermal mechanical processing procedures were developed to control the microstructural features of interest. Task II was concerned with the use of the cyclic stress strain curve and a damage model for predicting fatigue crack growth thresholds. Fatigue crack initiation and fatigue crack propagation both involve the concept of cyclic accumulated damage. The details of the damage structure can be related to a material's cyclic stress strain response (CSSR). Task III is concerned with the effect of ion implantation on the low cycle fatigue response of 7475. Since fatigue crack initiation is a surface phenomenon and fatigue crack propagation is a bulk phenomenon, the fatigue properties may be optimized by production processes that develop microstructures resistant to FCI on the surface, and microstructures resistant to FCP throughout the bulk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation continuing an examination of the fatigue properties of aluminum in vacuum. In the current phase, experimental work was directed at cyclic frequency and tensile fatigue effects and at the defect substructure generated in vacuum by fatigue stressing. The mean fatigue life was observed to depend on the cyclic rate of straining at all pressure levels. However, in the region of the critical pressure zone for fatigue life enhancement, changes in the cyclic frequency were noted to have a major effect on crack propagation, an increase in cyclic straining rate acting to shift the transition level to higher pressures. Measurements of the fatigue life under conditions limited to alternating tensile stresses alone showed that fatigue life enhancement or crack growth retardation in vacuum was not dependent on compressive stress distributions or fatigue crack closure. The experimental work inferred that crack retardation should not be mainly attributed to the reweldment of fracture surfaces in vacuum, but may be produced by dislocation glide and escape at oxide-free surfaces to reduce internal stresses. Finally, a well defined correlation was observed between the fatigue properties of aluminum and dislocation substructural distributions revealed by thin film electron microscopy. Under conditions of repeated loading, subgranular dislocation arrays were formed with an average size dependent on the strain amplitude and the prior dislocation distribution.
