Book excerpt: Written by one of the world's foremost authorities, this beautifully illustrated surgical atlas is a case-based presentation of the management of distal radius fractures. Each chapter offers a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and treatment of a specific fracture, including possible complications and how to prevent them, using detailed photographs and illustrations. The cases are accompanied by high-quality operative video to complete the surgical picture. Special emphasis throughout focuses on avoiding pitfalls and using special techniques to optimize outcomes. Key Highlights Nearly 700 illustrations and intraoperative photographs guide the reader through procedures. Operative video for all chapters, narrated by the author, including detailed explanations and rationale for each maneuver. A focus on the "how" of surgical technique (rather than the "why") keeps attention on the necessary steps, tools, and procedures to address a specific type of fracture. Real cases, presented from beginning to end, cover all of the difficult aspects of fracture management. Francisco del Piñal is considered to be among the world's best hand surgeons. His contributions in arthroscopic surgery techniques for wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally. This book, written for hand surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, and plastic surgeons, provides essential insight to specialists and subspecialists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating current management techniques for traumatic fractures and dislocations of the upper extremity, this atlas utilizes a practical, how-to structure, discussing philosophy, approach, patient positioning, prepping, draping, and surgical techniques for each type of injury. Generously illustrated with intraoperative photos, the chapters of this atlas are arranged by anatomic location, from the clavicle and shoulder down to the fingers, with each chapter briefly describing the thought processes involved in choosing surgical interventions and applied anatomy approaches, fixation selections, and techniques. Actual case examples, cadaver photos and plentiful radiographs illustrate the text for a strongly visual presentation, and a list of "Eglsederisms" - pithy bits of advice for residents and veteran surgeons alike - set the stage for a highly demonstrative resource for orthopedic and trauma surgeons, residents and fellows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AO documentation was established at the beginning of 1959, only 3 months after the founding of the AO. We used from the very beginning our X-ray cards and code sheets. Progress was rapid. Towards the end of 1959, we had already over 1000 X-ray cards with miniaturized X-rays representing the initial X-ray, the one after surgery, and the one at the 4-month follow-up. From the very beginning, the documentation was one of our four main pillars and provided us with manifold services. The docu mentation helped us in teaching the use of our instruments and implants, made it possible for us to establish a quality control system, helped us establish the indications for treatment, made it possible for us to plan graphically the operative procedures, and was of enormous help for us when we were developing our operative techniques. As an added bonus, the documentation provided us also with many slides of X-rays of the cases which we had documented. These we used in our 1ectures on the AO method. The X-ray cards of the documentation became also the basis for the AO technical commission in its evaluation of the instruments. Furthermore, the chief of each participating clinic received duplicates of all miniaturized X-rays which the documentation received from his institution. This he1ped him to see immediately what his co-workers were able to achieve and whether his co-workers had grasped the essence of the AO method and its applications.

Each chapter begins with a case that opens with a unique clinical presentation, followed by a description of the diagnosis, assessment and management techniques used to treat it, as well as the case outcome and clinical pearls and pitfalls. Cases included illustrate the various uses of the volar locking plate for metaphyseal and periarticular fractures, among others, as well as management strategies for open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) for the radial styloid. Ulnar styloid and ulnar head/neck fractures are likewise described. Pediatric distal radius fractures and complications round out the presentation. Pragmatic and reader friendly, Distal Radius Fractures: A Clinical Casebook will be an excellent resource for orthopedic surgeons, hand and upper extremity surgeons and sports medicine specialists confronted with both common and complex fractures to the distal radius and DRUJ.
