Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Heart Association published Maude Abbott's Atlas of Congenital Cardiac Disease in 1936. The Atlas was an important contribution to the understanding of cardiac defects and helped provide the stimulus for rapid advances in the diagnostic, physiologic, and surgical aspects of congenital heart disease over the following decades. These advances have since progressed to such a degree that, given current radiologic imaging and surgical techniques, many of the anomalies illustrated in the Atlas are rarely seen as complete morphologic specimens. This reprinting of the Atlas underlines the importance of Abbott's contribution for the present generation. This reprint includes a short history of Abbott's life and how she came to create the Atlas, including a discussion of the material she used for her 1934 London Exhibit, which served as the basis for the Atlas. The original text and illustrations are enhanced by color prints of fifty-five specimens in the Abbott Collection of the McGill Pathology Museum. Re-publication of the Atlas in 2006 coincides with the 100th anniversary of the the International Academy of Pathology, which Abbott co-founded.

Book excerpt: The aims and scope of this atlas include a complete review of the embryology of the normal heart, the normal cardiac anatomy along with a complete discussion of the terms and definitions used to identify and clarify both normal and abnormal anatomy. In addition, techniques of cardiac CT angiography as it pertains to imaging congenital abnormalities are discussed including radiation concepts and radiation saving techniques. The bulk of this book then goes on to completely review the field of adult congenital heart disease using text and more importantly a multitude of pictorial examples (in color and grey scale) to demonstrate the abnormalities. Drawings accompany each picture to better explain the example. Furthermore, difficult and complex anatomical examples are supplemented with digital images and movies to aid in illustrating and understanding the anatomy. Each general set of anomalies as well as each specific abnormality or set of abnormalities includes a concise and simple review of the embryology and epidemiology of the abnormality as well as a concise explanation of the anatomy of the abnormality. In addition, the methods to identify and recognize the abnormality by computed tomography is discussed. Finally, the prognosis and common treatment options for the anomaly are addressed within this comprehensive book.

Book excerpt: Rapid developments in congenital heart disease diagnosis and treatment have allowed children with congenital heart disease to survive to adulthood. In particular, advances in pediatric cardiology during the 2000s have shifted the majority of congenital heart disease-related mortalities to adulthood. Consequently, there are now hundreds of thousands of adults with congenital heart defects worldwide. In the near future, cardiologists are expected to encounter a steady increase in patients at grown-up congenital heart centers. This atlas includes representations of common congenital heart defects and complete sets of surgical or transcatheter interventions with the most recent acquisitions. The atlas also provides a selection of diagrams (more than 200 diagrammatic heart figures) from the cardiac catheterization laboratory of a pediatric or grown-up cardiology unit that can be easily modified by various software programs. With the addition of hemodynamic data acquired during cardiac catheterization, the diagrams become accurate anatomical and physiological reports. Simple line or symbol-based drawings, rather than artistic illustrations, have been used in figures to facilitate sharing and customization. In conclusion, I believe that this atlas is a necessary reference with great utility for cardiologists, heart surgeons, radiologists, clinical staff, medical students, nursing personnel, patients and their families. Note:There is currently only one diagrammatic atlas in the medical world (Mullins Atlas, Publisher: Wiley-Liss, 1991, product dimensions: 9.6 x 1.4 x 11.4 inches and $750.00). There have been many new interventional procedures and surgical techniques in the field of pediatric and adult Cardiology in the 21st century. Since this atlas was prepared nearly 30 years ago, it naturally needs revision today.https://www.amazon.com/Congenital-Heart-Disease-Diagrammatic-Atlas/dp/0471588172

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed to integrate cardiac anatomy with surgical repair by reviewing individual heart defects within an easy-to-follow reference format, A Practical Atlas of Congenital Heart Disease is designed to allow the reader to examine a congenitally malformed heart while referring to its anatomic and surgical description on a single page spread. Simple line drawings are used to identify the diagnostic anatomic features and to emphasize important surgical landmarks, allowing readers to differentiate the infinitely variable morphology in clinical practice. The anatomic pathologist will also gain an understanding of surgical repairs of postoperative hearts. For virtually every malformation, the position of the specialized conduction tissue is indicated. The book provides examples of malformations and the relevant surgical considerations, reflecting clinical practice: anatomical specimens are shown in the anatomical position, while the surgical figures are shown as they would be seen operatively. This enables the reader to practice mental imaging of the morphologic and spatial relationships that are integral to congenital heart surgery. In addition, some of the illustrated cases and morphology presented in these pages are themselves rare and sometimes unique examples of particular congenital heart malformations.

Book excerpt: Atlas of Pediatric Cardiac CTA is a concise visual guide to the imaging of congenital heart disease in infants and children. The book focuses on the utilization of cardiac CTA imaging for pediatric patients as distinct from adult patients, with an emphasis on techniques for retrospective and prospective scanning, reduction of the radiation dose, and CT data processing and analysis. It also describes cardiac CTA evaluation search patterns to assess the complex anatomy in congenital heart patients. As pediatric patients often present with multiple findings, separate chapters are devoted to the major structures of the cardiovascular system, accompanied with extensive imaging examples of the atria, ventricles, great vessels, coronary arteries, lungs and airways, and the situs. The book concludes with a review of shunts, procedures, and surgeries used in the management of this disorder. Atlas of Pediatric Cardiac CTA is a valuable resource for radiologists, cardiologists, and other clinicians involved in the care of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease.

Book excerpt: Comprises 167 line drawings of congenital heart defects--providing a method of reporting the results of the various cardiac imaging modalities in a detailed, anatomically realistic way, and standardizing the often confusing nomenclature. With the addition of hemodynamic data acquired during cardiac catheterization, the diagrams become accurate and concise anatomical and physiological reports. The Atlas covers many variations and combinations of atrio-ventricular, veno-atrial, and ventriculo-arterial connections; cardiac positions; atrial situs; and left and right aortic arches. Diagrams are easily modified to illustrate any abnormality by using a technique demonstrated in the book. Each diagram comes in duplicate--one labelled, to serve as a reference; and one unlabelled, to be removed, photocopied, and modified.

Book excerpt: This book combines an exceptional wealth of precise, exquisite schematic drawings and high-quality images with clear explanatory text in order to provide readers with a crisp and clear understanding of all aspects of congenital heart disease, from diagnosis to treatment and from the fetus to the adult. In format the book appears similar to a large collection of case reports covering all types of congenital heart disease, including complex lesions such as single ventricle and atrial isomerism. For each lesion, the illustrations are placed before the text so that the reader can gain a quick and general overview before going into more detail. The contents are as practical and concise as possible. The intention is that, despite its size, the book will serve as a handy reference for cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists, obstetricians specializing in fetal sonography, nurses, trainees, students, researchers, and even patients and their families. This is a “must-have” bedside reference in the cardiac ward, the ICU, and the fetal sonography room and will even be valuable in outpatient clinics.
