Book excerpt: This Atlas is addressed not only to specialists of Arthropod neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, but to anyone interested in the general structure of brain. Originally, it was planned to encompass several species of insects in order to show similarities and differences between them: but in practice such an under taking would have demanded a volume three times the present size, an exercise both prohibitive in cost and in material. And had it been accomplished it would have merely concussed all but the most persevering readers. Since my intention is not to stun but to enlighten, I have consequently restricted the main contents of this book to one species, Musca domestica, the common house fly. The Atlas attempts to illustrate the main neuropil regions of the fused cephalic ganglia as well as to define the main tracts and many single neurons which contribute to their structure. Since the accounts of FU)GEL in 1876, VIALLANES in 1884 and KENYON in 1896 and 1897, all three workers veritable Ptolemys of insect neuroanatomy, only the description of POWER comes near to modernizing our knowledge of the general dispositions of the main neuropil masses. And as far as I am aware, apart from the now classic work of reference by BULLOCK and HORRIDGE: Structure and Function in the Nervous System of Invertebrates, there is no contemporary work which lists, in a concise way, the various terminologies used for brain regions.

Book excerpt: A fundamental objective in neurobiology is to understand the neuronal circuitry that underlies different aspects of behavior (sensory integration, decision making, motor control, learning, and memory formation). In invertebrates, neural circuitry is classically analyzed at the cellular level using sparse reconstruction based on single cell staining techniques (Golgi and intracellular staining) in conjunction with functional and correlative studies using immunohistology and ultrastructure analysis. These approaches led to the identification of complete circuits at the synaptic level in small invertebrates (e.g., Caenorhabditis elegans) and in small parts of the brain (e.g., fly lamina). Advances in light microscopy techniques and the use of targeted expression of neuronal and molecular markers in transgenic animals allow more elaborate circuit mapping. High-throughput techniques in electron microscopy, genetic engineering (‘brainbow’), and three-dimensional microscopy of global brain circuitry allow the establishment of the connectome and complete wiring diagrams of dense neuropils, including synaptic connections. This chapter focuses on methods for characterizing ’microcircuits’—that is, the connectome on the synaptic level.

Book excerpt: The "functional" in the title of this book not only reflects my personal bias about neuroanatomy in brain research, it is also the gist of many chapters which describe sophisticated ways to resolve structures and interpret them as dynamic entities. Examples are: the visualization of functionally identified brain areas or neurons by activity staining or intracellular dye-iontophoresis; the resolution of synaptic connections between physiologically identified nerve cells; and the biochemical identification of specific neurons (their peptides and transmitters) by histo- and immunocytochemistry. I personally view the nervous system as an organ whose parts, continuously exchanging messages, arrive at their decisions by the cooperative phenome non of consensus and debate. This view is, admittedly, based on my own ex perience of looking at myriads of nerve cells and their connections rather than studying animal behaviour or theorizing. Numerous structural studies have demonstrated that interneurons in the brain must receive hundreds of thousands of synapses. Many neurons receive inputs from several different sensory areas: each input conveys a message about the external world and possibly also about past events which are stored within the central nervous system. Whether an interneuron responds to a certain combination of inputs may be, literally, a matter of debate whose outcome is decided at the post synaptic membrane. A nerve cell responding to an overriding command is possibly a rare event.
