Book Synopsis R&D Funding in Atlantic Universities by :
Download or read book R&D Funding in Atlantic Universities written by and published by Fredericton, N.B. : Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission. This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication updates research funding statistics presented in the 2000 Report on post-secondary research trends in Atlantic Canada and reaches beyond these statistics by examining some of the reasons why Atlantic Canada faces challenges in working with the national research & development (R & D) environment. It begins with an overview of Atlantic Canada's post-secondary environment in relation to the rest of Canada and provides background to understanding the research funding trends reported in later chapters. Chapter 2 first looks at Canada's R & D expenditures within the international context, then analyzes many of the research funding statistics presented in the 2000 report. In chapter 3, the publication turns to federal government funding of university research through an analysis of the federal research funding environment, with specific attention to funding provided to universities through the three national granting councils. Chapter 4 builds on the previous analyses by focussing directly on three of the government's newest research initiatives: the Canada Research Chairs Program, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the Indirect Costs Program. Chapter 5 examines Atlantic Canada's regional funding initiative, the Atlantic Innovation Fund, as well as the provincial R & D strategies & funding mechanisms developed since the 2000 report. The final chapter draws conclusions from the data provided in order to encourage critical reflection on the role of the region's universities.
Book Synopsis Ideas, Institutions, and Interests by : Peter W.B. Phillips
Download or read book Ideas, Institutions, and Interests written by Peter W.B. Phillips and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s thirteen provinces and territories are significant actors in Canadian society, directly shaping cultural, political, and economic domains. Regions also play a key role in creating diversity within innovative activity. The role of provinces and territories in setting science, technology, and innovation policy is, however, notably underexplored. Ideas, Institutions, and Interests examines each province and territory to offer real-world insights into the complexity and opportunities of regionally differentiated innovation policy in a pan-continental system. Contributing scholars detail the distinctive ways in which provinces and territories articulate ideas and interests through their institutions, programs, and policies. Many of the contributing authors have engaged first-hand with either micro- or macro-level policy innovation and are innovation leaders in their own right, providing invaluable perspectives on the topic. Exploring the vital role of provinces in the last thirty years of science, technology, and innovation policy development and implementation, Ideas, Institutions, and Interests is an insightful book that places innovation policy in the context of multilevel governance.

Book Synopsis Unicorn in the Woods by : Gordon Pitts
Download or read book Unicorn in the Woods written by Gordon Pitts and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As tech investors the world over search for elusive unicorns (start-ups valued at over $1 billion), acclaimed business journalist Gordon Pitts asks whether there can be a place for high-tech innovation and unicorn-like value creation outside of major urban centres, whether in Atlantic Canada, rust-belt New York, or Northern Ontario. Journeying back to the origins of Radian6 and Q1 Labs -- two New Brunswick companies that sold for a combined $1 billion -- in the basements and offices of a group of geeks and dreamers, Pitts tells a story of two remarkable companies and the legacies that continue to this day. But theirs was not a simple tale of overnight success; there were sellouts and firings, comebacks and vindication, and still unfulfilled promise. This is a story of high-tech value creation far from Silicon Valley, a story of the mythical unicorn in the woods. Are the stories of Radian6 and Q1 Labs outliers, rogue datapoints that should be discarded, or the foundation for a new knowledge economy outside of the mainstream?
