Book excerpt: The economic analysis of athletic success on contributions for university athletic departments is studied through panel regression, and panel vector auto regression, along with dynamics through directed acyclical graphs, impulse response functions, and forecast error variance decompositions. Previous literature suggests a mixed picture throughout the literature in determining the effect college athletics have on contributions to universities athletic departments. The key question is what athletic variables drive contributions to the athletic department, and what their impact is. This thesis analyzes the effect of different independent variables on the dependent variables football, basketball, other sports winning percentages and contributions through various systems based on conference alignment. These 160 universities with eight years of data are tested first through panel regression to determine error terms for the dependent variables then using these error terms through Orthogonal Partitioned Regression and Frisch-Waugh Theorems. Once these theorems have been applied, panel vector auto regression is used to provide dynamics to the study and literature. The dynamic analysis of the results are evaluated by using directed acyclical graphs, impulse response functions, and forecast error variance decomposition provide visual evidence to support the hypothesis. The causal flows provided through the directed acyclical graphs demonstrate the impact athletics have on contributions though all systems. The impulse response functions also provide visual analysis though shocking a specific variable and determining the impact of the shock. The impulse response functions also support the hypothesis, that increasing athletic winning percentage provide a positive impact on contributions. Forecast error variance decompositions demonstrate what percentage of the system is determined from each variable. Economic analysis through panel regression and dynamic analysis support the hypothesis that successful athletic programs have a positive impact, and generate contributions. Further results indicate through all systems, football, basketball and other sports winning percentage cause contributions and conference alignment has a significant impact on contributions. This information is beneficial to athletic departments to aid in decision making in determining what drives contributions. The premise for this idea evolved from research regarding the annual U.S. News & World Report college rankings, in which various factors are considered, including reputation. Since the athletic department is frequently referred to as the 'doorstep of the University, ' the research sought to determine whether or not a winning athletic program does in fact enhance the reputation of a university, thus making it more appealing to talented students. Along with the annual rankings, a method called the Resource-Based View (RBV) was used to calculate athletic success, based on four characteristics that included win-loss record, compliance, graduation rates and financial health. Using the seven public institutions in the Atlantic Coast Conference as the subjects, the athletic departments were analyzed and ranked based on these criteria and evaluated against each institution's ranking in U.S News using Spearman's Correlation Coefficient. Although the results of the study did not result in the strong relationship between a winning athletic department and university success that was predicted, the small sample size was a factor. This study sets up a starting point for a nationwide study of all institutions in the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a follow-up study and has great promise.

Book excerpt: Intercollegiate athletic departments (ICAs) rely on philanthropic giving to remain relevant in the "arms race" that is college athletics. Donations provide the necessary resources (scholarships, upgraded facilities, etc.) to compete with rival programs for prospective student-athletes and fans. Previous research in ICA philanthropy has found that team success is one of the key factors driving donations to athletic programs. However, much of the research in this field has centered on athletic giving on a macro-level, focusing on the overall alumni population of an institution. While this research is important for colleges and universities, it misses on measuring the impact that success has on a key alumni subset for ICAs, former student-athletes. To address the gap in the empirical literature, this cross-sectional study used data from the University of San Diego (USD) to quantitatively examine the athletic careers of all 295 former men's basketball student-athletes and the impact that team and personal athletic success has had on their giving patterns as alumni. Utilizing logistic and multiple regression analysis, this study looked at whether select success metrics, including team championships and individual achievements, as well as other, non-success related variables (such as wealth and years since graduation) are correlated with philanthropic giving. Study results revealed the significance of net worth in predicting whether an alum will donate (but not on the total amount of their giving) and that alumni who reside near campus after graduation donate more over their lifetime than their peers who do not. This study also showed that, for each additional year a student-athlete was a part of the program, their probability of donating increases by 6% - 8% and that, when ICAs do not have access to wealth information on donors, individual success on the court does have an impact on one's likelihood to donate. Taken together, findings from this study can help ICAs better understand the determinants of philanthropic giving and provide an analytical methodology that can be applied to data from their own institution; in effect, allowing them to more efficiently segment prospective athletic donors, become better stewards of their resources, and increase alumni giving participation.
