Book excerpt: This dissertation utilized qualitative methods. The participants in this study included 12 male and female NCAA Division III effective team sport head coaches from the same athletic conference located in the Midwestern region of the U.S. spanning nine different sports. Each participant coach was asked to take part in two in-person interviews and type reflective journal entries on their coaching development processes. The constant comparative method (Merriam, 1998) for thematic analysis was used on the interview transcriptions and journal entries. Based on the analysis of the findings, five overarching themes were highlighted: Experience, Relationships, Culture, Balance, and Female Sport. The trustworthiness of this dissertation was attained by triangulation methods, such as member checking, peer debriefing, and negative case analysis.

Book excerpt: "Job performance evaluation has been acknowledged as a challenging, but necessary process in a variety of professional fields. The purpose of this study was to rank criteria used by NCAA Division III Athletic directors to evaluate their head coaches. Research questions sought to discover the most and least important criteria, if the prioritized criteria were in line with the NCAA Division III philosophy, and finally if any differences exist between the way conferences rank their criteria. A rank order questionnaire was used to study how the criteria factors, linked by a common purpose of evaluating a head coach, rated against each other. Ten primary criteria were extracted from research and used in this survey. Athletic administrators (N=62, n-22) from six Midwestern NCAA Division III conferences were asked to participate in this survey. The most important criteria for evaluating a head coach was skill level in building student athlete relationships (2.9), closely followed by a coach's skill level in recruiting student athletes (3.0). On the contrary, a coach's skill level in public relations (8.5), was the least important amongst all ten criteria. Collectively, criteria associated with student athletes were reviewed as more important than criteria without association. This suggests the NCAA Division III philosophy directs the criteria selection and prioritization for athletic administrators. Slight differences were present in the way conferences ranked the criteria. This study could lead to more in depth research regarding coaching job performance evaluation, other governances of college athletics or sample populations of universities"--Abstract.

Participants were Division III college football players (N = 76) from an institution in the Northeast. Each participant completed a modified Teacher Confirmation Scale (Ellis, 2000) as well as a Football Self-Efficacy Scale which was created in accordance with guidelines framed out by Bandura (1997). Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the relationships between coaching confirmation and self efficacy. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the current study was to examine the difference in strength and conditioning coaching style effects on motivation of Division II and Division III football athletes. Participants {N = 61) were National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division II (n = 30) or Division III (n = 31) football athletes with an average of 2.77 years (SD = 1.04) with the strength and conditioning coach. Participants completed questionnaires assessing coaching style (Leadership Scale for Sport) and motivation (Sport Motivation Scale-6). All questionnaires used were completed prior to or following a workout with the strength and conditioning coach. A significant difference (p .05) was found between Division II and Division III coaching styles in training and instruction and social support. A significant difference (p .05) was also found between Division II and Division III athlete motivation in external regulation, introjected regulation, integrated regulation, and intrinsic motivation. No significant differences (p .05) were found between Division II and Division III coaching styles in democratic behavior, autocratic behavior, and positive feedback. No significant differences (p .05) were found between Division II and Division III football athlete motivation in amotivation and identified regulation. The current findings demonstrate the difference that exists between Division II and Division III strength and conditioning coaching style as well as athlete motivation.
