Book Synopsis Pediatric Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease by : Ronald M. Lauer
Download or read book Pediatric Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease written by Ronald M. Lauer and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most epidemiologic studies of risk factors for atherosclerosis have been conducted in adult populations, yet there is now evidence that the vascular disease process begins at a young age. This book reviews recent findings that allow physicians to identify and manage children and adolescents who are at the highest risk for the development of premature cardiovascular disease in later life. It covers cholesterol levels, blood pressure, body size, obesity, coronary artery calcification and carotid artery thickness, and discusses the identification, familial aggregation, tracking and management of each of these risk factors.

Book Synopsis Statin Therapy in Children by : Ambika Pallikunnath Ashraf
Download or read book Statin Therapy in Children written by Ambika Pallikunnath Ashraf and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landmark studies such as the Bogalusa Heart study, Pathobiological Determinants of Atherosclerosis in Youth study, and Muscatine and Young Finns studies established that the atherosclerotic process begins in childhood. Early precursors of atherosclerosis may increase risk of cardiovascular morbidity in adulthood. Follow-up studies of children with familial homozygous hypercholesterolemia showed that initiation of statin therapy slowed the progression of carotid intima-media thickness and reduced cardiovascular disease risk. Despite the growing evidence on the efficacy of statins and a rising prevalence of dyslipidemia, there are concerns regarding long-term safety and efficacy. Moreover, data on statin use in children with secondary dyslipidemia are sparse. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the current state of literature on the indications, contraindications, efficacy and safety data on the use of statins in pediatric dyslipidemia.

Book Synopsis Childhood Prevention of Atherosclerosis and Hypertension by : Ronald M. Lauer
Download or read book Childhood Prevention of Atherosclerosis and Hypertension written by Ronald M. Lauer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Atherosclerosis and hypertension, common causes of death in adults, may originate in childhood. Genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors may contribute to the disorders, but may also have preventive value in children. Investigations concerning the earliest origins of these disorders are presented, with a focus on those areas of research which represent potential medical strategies for prevention of atherosclerosis and hypertension. The predictive value of nutrition, obesity, cigarette smoking, plasma lipids and lipoproteins, serum cholesterol, heredity, blood pressure, and other risk factors is examined. Sociological and cultural dietary studies, such as the design of lipid profiles in children, are described; these are aimed at reducing cardiovascular risks in certain populations by fat-modified diets. The effect of socioeconomic status on the development of obesity in children is evaluated.
Book Synopsis Textbook of Vascular Medicine by : Rhian M. Touyz
Download or read book Textbook of Vascular Medicine written by Rhian M. Touyz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on the vascular biology and physiology that underlie vascular disorders in clinical medicine. Vascular biomedicine is a rapidly growing field as new molecular mechanisms of vascular health and disease are unraveled. Many of the major cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke and vascular dementia are diseases of the vasculature. In addition vascular injury underpins conditions like kidney failure and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This field is truly multidisciplinary involving scientists in many domains such as molecular and vascular biology, cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology and immunology and inflammation. Clinically, specialists across multiple disciplines are involved in the management of patients with vascular disorders, including cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons. This book covers a wide range of topics and provides an overview of the discipline of vascular biomedicine without aiming at in-depth reviews, but rather offering up-to-date knowledge organized in concise and structured chapters, with key points and pertinent references. The structure of the content provides an integrative and translational approach from basic science (e.g. stem cells) to clinical medicine (e.g. cardiovascular disease). The content of this book is targeted to those who are new in the field of vascular biology and vascular medicine and is ideal for medical students, graduate and postgraduate students, clinical fellows and academic clinicians with an interest in the vascular biology and physiology of cardiovascular disease and related pathologies.

It covers all aspects of obesity from epidemiology and prevention to recent developments in biochemistry and genetics, and to the varied approaches to management which are influenced by social and clinical need. A foreword by William Dietz and a forward-looking 'future perspectives' conclusion by Philip James embrace an international team of authors, all with first-hand experience of the issues posed by obesity in the young. This comprehensive survey of an important and growing medical problem will help inform, influence and educate those charged with tackling this crisis.

Book Synopsis Evolution of Cardio-Metabolic Risk from Birth to Middle Age by : Gerald S. Berenson
Download or read book Evolution of Cardio-Metabolic Risk from Birth to Middle Age written by Gerald S. Berenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That precursors of adult coronary artery disease, hypertension, and type II diabetes begin in childhood have been clearly established by the Bogalusa Heart Study. This unique research program has been able to follow a biracial (black/white) population over 35 years from childhood through mid-adulthood to provide perspectives on the natural history of adult heart diseases. Not only do these observations describe trajectories of cardio-metabolic risk variables leading to these diseases but provide a rationale for the need to begin prevention beginning in childhood. The trajectories of the burden of cardio-metabolic risk variables in the context of their fetal origin and chromosome telomere dynamics provide some insight into the metabolic imprinting in utero and aging process. The observed racial contrasts on cardio-metabolic risk variables implicate various biologic pathways interacting with environment contributing to the high morbidity and mortality from related diseases in our population. To address the seriousness of the onset of cardiovascular disease in youth, approaches to primordial prevention are described focussing on childhood health education as an important aspect of Preventive Cardiology.
