It was her heritage, perhaps, from a visionary father; it was most certainly the outgrowth of "that state of life to which it had pleased God to call her." There are spirits conceived and born in revoAs she turned the key in the door of the cottage, where the first chapter of her life had been lived, she turned it just as surely on that past. She visualized swiftly the years that had gone before, the experiences and emotions, shut up, now, in that empty house to be left behind. She walked quickly down the sordid street of the industrial town, with a sense of release. She went into a store to leave the key for the agent of the house. "Where ye going now, Joan?" he asked her. "To Chicago." "Goin' to get a job there?" "Oh, yes, I hope so," she answered evasively. "We'll miss ye down here." "Thanks, Mike. I'll not forget my friends here." Her real farewells had been said the night before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Shadow on the Threshold I polish the glass case (very carefully, for fear of the cracked panes giving way), and display to the greatest advantage the few little prints and showy articles which we possess. I make the brightest books conspicuous, and put the faded ones into the background. Then I change the places of the prints and periodicals in the win dow, that the stationer opposite (whose books and pictures are constantly renewed) may imag ine that we sometimes replenish our stock. And while I am busy the old sad thought lies only half hidden under those passing fancies I try so hard to hold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Threshold: A Novel He turned from this unsightliness into the broad square which had been named for his family. In the center of it the Courthouse stood with a majestic display of Gothic columns which had cost the tax payers of Cresston dear. The long, grassy slope of the lawn, shaded by ancient trees that were never trimmed, was a favorite lobby for the men who talked over the affairs of the nation in the open, and for loungers who fed on stray bits of gossip, and for small boys who did errands for a penny. But at this hour the lawn was empty and the shade of the great trees had turned it into dim aisles of coolness and beauty. Stray bits of paper moving in the breeze that came from the hot west were lifted lazily, like white butterflies hovering in the deep shadow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dweller on the Threshold The sadness noted by Malling was at first evasive and fleeting, not indelibly fixed in the puckers of a forehead, or in the down-drawn corners of a mouth. It was as a thin, almost impalpable mist, that can scarcely be seen, yet that alters all the features in a landscape ever so faintly. Like a shadow it travelled across the eyes, obscured the forehead, lay about the lips. And as a shadow lifts it lifted. But it soon returned, like a thing uneasy that is becoming determined to discover an abiding place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Stumble on the Threshold, Vol. 2 of 2 Perhaps it is not to the advantage of the successful candidate for University honours that at an age when the majority of young men are seeking for employment and the means of livelihood, he is placed above such anxieties for ever. It seems somewhat ridiculous that by the gaining a college Fellowship, all neces sity for work on the very threshold of adult life is done away with; and no doubt it has encouraged that lethargic indolence which, under the fine name of lettered ease, is so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. My vacations had been spent mainly in the N orth - in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isles, in Scandinavia and Iceland, once even in the far limits of Finland. I was a keen Sportsman of a sort, an old-experienced fisher, a fair shot with gun and rifle, and in my hillcraft I' might well stand comparison with most men. April has ever seemed to me the finest season of the year even in our cold northern altitudes, and the memory of many bright Aprils had brought me up from the South on the night before to Aller foot, whence a dogcart had taken me up Glen Aller to the inn at Allermuir; and now the same desire had set me on the heather with my face to the cold brown hills.
