Book excerpt: With two novels and one short story collection published to overwhelming critical acclaim ("Monkeys takes your breath away," said Anne Tyler; "heartbreaking, exhilarating," raved the New York Times Book Review), Susan Minot has emerged as one of the most gifted writers in America, praised for her ability to strike at powerful emotional truths in language that is sensual and commanding, mesmerizing in its vitality and intelligence. Now, with Evening, she gives us her most ambitious novel, a work of surpassing beauty. During a summer weekend on the coast of Maine, at the wedding of her best friend, Ann Grant fell in love. She was twenty-five. Forty years later--after three marriages and five children--Ann Lord finds herself in the dim claustrophobia of illness, careening between lucidity and delirium and only vaguely conscious of the friends and family parading by her bedside, when the memory of that weekend returns to her with the clarity and intensity of a fever-dream. Evening unfolds in the rushlight of that memory, as Ann relives those three vivid days on the New England coast, with motorboats buzzing and bands playing in the night, and the devastating tragedy that followed a spectacular wedding. Here, in the surge of hope and possibility that coursed through her at twenty-five--in a singular time of complete surrender--Ann discovers the highest point of her life. Superbly written and miraculously uplifting, Evening is a stirring exploration of time and memory, of love's transcendence and of its failure to transcend--a rich testament to the depths of grief and passion, and a stunning achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although philosophy, religion, and civic cultures used to help people prepare for aging and dying well, this is no longer the case. Today, aging is frequently seen as a problem to be solved and death as a harsh reality to be masked. In part, our cultural confusion is rooted in an inadequate conception of the human person, which is based on a notion of absolute individual autonomy that cannot but fail in the face of the dependency that comes with aging and decline at the end of life. To help correct the ethical impoverishment at the root of our contemporary social confusion, The Evening of Life provides an interdisciplinary examination of the challenges of aging and dying well. It calls for a re-envisioning of cultural concepts, practices, and virtues that embraces decline, dependency, and finitude rather than stigmatizes them. Bringing together the work of sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, theologians, and medical practitioners, this collection of essays develops an interrelated set of conceptual tools to discuss the current challenges posed to aging and dying well, such as flourishing, temporality, narrative, and friendship. Above all, it proposes a positive understanding of thriving in old age that is rooted in our shared vulnerability as human beings. It also suggests how some of these tools and concepts can be deployed to create a medical system that better responds to our contemporary needs. The Evening of Life will interest bioethicists, medical practitioners, clinicians, and others involved in the care of the aging and dying. Contributors: Joseph E. Davis, Sharon R. Kaufman, Paul Scherz, Wilfred M. McClay, Kevin Aho, Charles Guignon, Bryan S. Turner, Janelle S. Taylor, Sarah L. Szanton, Janiece Taylor, and Justin Mutter

Her mother brought her up after her fathers death. She lived a very short period of life with mother but before dying, her mother handed over her to her cousin who lived in America. She continued her studies there but she came in trouble when her granny sold her to pimps. Further, that gang of pimps sold her to Marten, who was a high class Prostitute, for sending her to Dubai. However, one Russian man saved her from the prostitution. He bought her from Marten and purveyed her like a daughter and Olga was happy with him. Once again a strange anomaly happened; she was kidnapped by that gang of pimps but this time she was saved by her boyfriend. Fate changed its side and again she adopted prostitution for saving the life of her father-like. Diana, one of the members under Marten served her in front of Allan Pearson who was a Hollywood Director. He was astonished seeing her beauty. He helped her and offered her film to play a lead role. She denied but when he made her understand, she accepted his proposal after discussing with her father-like. He gave her an international podium and then she was a popular personality. Again she took a U-turn. She left America after completing her studies. When she reached Russia, she came across her second childhood friend. He deflowered her and Olga tried to attempt suicide but Igor stopped her and gave her full support. Finally, she joined the Russian Army after leaving the world of glamour and fulfilled the dream of her parents. She married with Igor and kept living a very happy life with him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a loved one dies, it is often a challenging task to offer comfort to family members and friends while simultaneously celebrating a life now lifted into the heavens. In his collection of selected reflections about life, death, and everlasting love, Baptist minister and author Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr. shares words of comfort he has provided grieving families at past funeral services with the hope of providing encouragement to todays bereaved. Lassiter has served as minister for several churches and relies on his experience interacting with other pastors and worshippers to share his inspirational wisdom and applicable scriptures in the second edition of Words of Comfort at Evening Time. Included in Lassiters compilation are consoling messages delivered at two churches in Dallas, Texas; resolutions of comfort extended to family members; and additional funeral messages, including the one delivered at his own fathers memorial service. Through his inspiring reflections, Lassiter helps the grieving to realize that a walk through the shadow of death is a celebration of a full life and provides encouragement to those left behind to live each day knowing that death is not the end, but the beginning of an eternity with God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas and practices concerning sleep and night-time are constantly changing and widely varied in different cultures and societies. What we do during the day and night is the result of much political struggle. Trade unions, political parties, entrepreneurs, leaders and schools boards, all have an interest in questions of timing for the opening and closing of shops, the starting hours of schools and factories, and the number of hours people have to work and sleep. By drawing together comparative case studies from countries in both Asia and Europe, Night-time and Sleep in Asia and the West allows the reader to track the differences in the cultural importance given to the night, and to compare the ways in which the challenges and opportunities of modernity have been played out in the East and the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling modern classic—both poignant and funny—narrated by a fifteen year old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer, and turns to his favourite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the workings of Christopher’s mind. And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotions. The effect is dazzling, making for one of the freshest debut in years: a comedy, a tearjerker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is about how we are in the evening time according to the Bible; the evening time is not corresponding to the natural time when the sun starts to go down, but this book is revealing how spiritual darkness will start to overtake the world before Jesus comes for his church. The prophecies that the Bible predicts are arranged in the novel to show how these prophecies will affect people and what Christians will go through whereas the enemy starts to encroach his wickedness and power against Gods people to take control of the whole entire world. The Bible already tells us what is going to happen in the last days before his imminent return; a group called the Evening Time Laborers are going to stand against the powers of hell and share the gospel to a lost world, but they are running out of time. They are going to labor in the evening time while the anti-Christ is starting to expose himself and is trying to take his seat as a one world leader for seven years; this new leader is no other but Hitler resurrected. The End Time Laborers are faced with reaching the world before the anti-Christ; this fiction novel is filled with action, romance, and excitement; and these are some of the things people will experience as we draw closer to the end time. The Bible has several scriptures about prophecy that the world will face in the near future; even Jesus warns in the book of Matthew chapter 24 that natural disasters would happen before he comes to take his church. Mother Nature will go off course for no apparent reason and many signs and wonders will start to appear as a sign to warn people of his soon return. Many bible scholars and ministers have different interpretations about the rapture; some believe the rapture will come before the Great Tribulation and others believe the rapture will come in the middle of the tribulation while others believe the rapture will come at the end of the Great tribulation. You have to research on your own and make your own decision when Jesus will return for his church; I am not going to give my opinion on which one is right, but one thing is certain. Jesus is going to return for his church and the Great Tribulation is just around the corner. In-addition, the Great Tribulation will last seven years and during this time; the Anti-Christ will reign as a King of the whole entire world, and he will try to get everybody to worship him as God, and receive his mark that is 666. If the rapture happens in the middle or end of the tribulation; many Christians will suffer and be executed without mercy according to the book of Revelation. This dramatized noel will reveal the importance of laboring before darkness takes over because trying to work for Christ during the Tribulation will be almost impossible.
