Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernist epic is more interesting and more diverse than we have supposed. As a radical form of national fiction it appeared in many parts of the world in the early twentieth century. Reading a selection of works from the United States, England, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, and Brazil, The Evolutions of Modernist Epic develops a comparative theory of this genre and its global development. That development was, it argues, bound up with new ideas about biological evolution. During the first decades of the twentieth century—a period known, in the history of evolutionary science, as 'the eclipse of Darwinism'—evolution's significance was questioned, rethought, and ultimately confined to the Neo-Darwinist discourse with which we are familiar today. Epic fiction participated in, and was shaped by, this shift. Drawing on queer forms of sexuality to cultivate anti-heroic and non-progressive modes of telling national stories, the genre contested reductive and reactionary forms of social Darwinism. The book describes how, in doing so, the genre asks us to revisit our assumptions about ethnolinguistics and organic nationalism. It also models how the history of evolutionary thought can provide a new basis for comparing diverse modernisms and their peculiar nativisms.

Book excerpt: One of the Wall Street Journal's 10 Best Books of 2020 One of the New York Times's 100 Notable Books of 2020 A biography of J. B. S. Haldane, the brilliant and eccentric British scientist whose innovative predictions inspired Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. J. B. S. Haldane’s life was rich and strange, never short on genius or drama—from his boyhood apprenticeship to his scientist father, who first instilled in him a devotion to the scientific method; to his time in the trenches during the First World War, where he wrote his first scientific paper; to his numerous experiments on himself, including inhaling dangerous levels of carbon dioxide and drinking hydrochloric acid; to his clandestine research for the British Admiralty during the Second World War. He is best remembered as a geneticist who revolutionized our understanding of evolution, but his peers hailed him as a polymath. One student called him “the last man who might know all there was to be known.” He foresaw in vitro fertilization, peak oil, and the hydrogen fuel cell, and his contributions ranged over physiology, genetics, evolutionary biology, mathematics, and biostatistics. He was also a staunch Communist, which led him to Spain during the Civil War and sparked suspicions that he was spying for the Soviets. He wrote copiously on science and politics in newspapers and magazines, and he gave speeches in town halls and on the radio—all of which made him, in his day, as famous in Britain as Einstein. It is the duty of scientists to think politically, Haldane believed, and he sought not simply to tell his readers what to think but to show them how to think. Beautifully written and richly detailed, Samanth Subramanian’s A Dominant Character recounts Haldane’s boisterous life and examines the questions he raised about the intersections of genetics and politics—questions that resonate even more urgently today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage book contains Asa Gray’s 1889 collection of essays on the subject of Darwinism. The articles champion the theory of evolution from a botanical standpoint, but also seek to reconcile Darwin’s theory with religion, which Gray did by making a case for theistic evolution – a marriage of theology and the theory of evolution. This fascinating volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in the in the work of Charles Darwin, and it would make for a great addition to collections of allied literature. Asa Gray (1810 - 1888) was one of the most esteemed and influential botanists of nineteenth century America, most famous for this collection of essays. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1995, Antievolutionism Before World War I is the first volume in the series, Creationism in Twentieth Century America, reissued in 2021. The volume brings together original sources from the beginning of the twentieth century, critiquing Darwinism and the theory of natural selection. The sources included in this collection debate the role of natural selection in evolution, as well wider aspects of Darwinian theory from a creationist stance. The essays feature prominent figures from the period in the fields of naturalism, philosophy and theology and includes contributions from Alexander Patterson, Eberhard Dennert, Luther Tracy Townsend and George Frederick Wright. The collection will be of especial interest to natural historians, and theologians as well as academics of philosophy, geology and history.
