Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book by George MacDonald. It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond is a very sweet little boy who makes joy everywhere he goes. He fights despair and gloom and brings peace to his family. One night, as he is trying to sleep, Diamond repeatedly plugs up a hole in the loft wall to stop the wind from blowing in. However, he soon finds out that this is stopping the North Wind from seeing through her window. Diamond befriends her, and North Wind lets him ride on her back, taking him on several adventures. Though the North Wind does good deeds and helps people, she also does seemingly terrible things. On one of her assignments, she must sink a ship. Yet everything she does that seems bad leads to something good. The North Wind seems to be a representation of Pain and Death working according to God's will for something good. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence".

Book excerpt: At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book written by Scottish author George MacDonald. It was serialized in the children's magazine Good Words for the Young beginning in 1868 and was published in book form in 1871. It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond travels together with the mysterious Lady North Wind through the nights. The book includes the fairy tale Little Daylight, which has been pulled out as an independent work, or separately, added to other collections of his fairy tales. Themes In this book, MacDonald touches on many theological and philosophical questions, especially concerning theodicy. Today, it is considered one of his masterpieces. According to MacDonald's son and biographer Greville MacDonald, there are many similarities between Diamond and MacDonald's own son Maurice, who died young. Diamond seems to represent Christ, always trying to help others while not completely belonging to this world.

Book excerpt: This hilariously readable collection of classic nonsense poetry, delightfully illustrated throughout, is a showcase of comic talent and sheer silliness. The Everyman Book of Nonsense Verse features an eclectic spectrum of contributors ranging wildly from Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll to Hilaire Belloc, Ted Hughes, Ogden Nash, and Shakespeare, with illustrations by Mervyn Peake, Quentin Blake, Emma Chichester Clark, Spike Milligan, and the deliciously sinister Edward Gorey. Such old favorites as “The Owl and the Pussycat” are accompanied by “Macavity: The Mystery Cat” and “Jabberwocky,” while Ted Hughes’s “Wodwo” sits alone by the bank of a stream in a state of innocence and curiosity that mirrors a child’s sense of wonder at the universe. Whether sweetly funny or deliciously naughty, these masterpieces of the art of the absurd will charm readers both young and old.

Book excerpt: A Victorian fairy tale that has enchanted readers for more than a hundred years: the magical story of Diamond, the son of a poor coachman, who is swept away by the North Wind–a radiant, maternal spirit with long, flowing hair–and whose life is transformed by a brief glimpse of the beautiful country “at the back of the north wind.” It combines a Dickensian regard for the working class of mid-19th-century England with the invention of an ethereal landscape, and is published here alongside Arthur Hughes’s handsome illustrations from the original 1871 edition.

Book excerpt: Find Out Why MacDonald is Considered a Master of Fantasies These three most beloved classic Victorian-era fantasies of George MacDonald transport the reader to another time, real and imagined. At the Back of the North Wind is the tale of a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the mysterious spirit force, the North Wind. This captivating story of Diamond's radiant spirit in the face of the poverty and fatal contagions of the Victorian Age has served as an inspiration for generations. The Princess and the Goblin introduces us to Princess Irene, who lives in her father's castle near wild mountains-a land "full of hollow places underneath," where there lived a race of goblins banished by the King. Curdie, a local miner's son, is befriended by the Princess and, aided by Irene's magical great-great-grandmother, works to stop the plot by the goblins to take over the kingdom. The Princess and Curdie is set two years later, when Curdie is sent by Irene's mysterious great-great-grandmother on a mission to disrupt the enemies of the King as they plot to kill him. Together the old Princess and Curdie rescue the King and Princess Irene, and Irene and Curdie marry, peacefully ruling the kingdom for another generation. Author George MacDonald was a personal friend and mentor to Lewis Caroll, and also influenced the work of renowned fantasy authors C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkein, and Oz-creator Frank L. Baum. Although MacDonald explored a wide range of subjects in his varied writings, his children's classics remain the most popular, and are clearly written for the young at heart. With 121 illustrations. This book is also available from Echo Point Books in hardcover, ISBN 1635619173.
