Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine what, if any, associations exist between at-risk students' academic indicators and participation (or nonparticipation) in a school sanctioned extracurricular activity. The subjects from the study were drawn from three high schools in Missouri. The study included all students who were enrolled in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program in each respective school. The researcher collected data on these students' attendance rates and grade point averages. The participants were divided into four categories. The first were at-risk students who participated solely in an athletic activity (e.g. baseball, football, and track). The second group consisted of at-risk students who only participated in a nonathletic activity (e.g. drama, speech and debate, FFA). The third group included at-risk students who participated in both an athletic and non-athletic activity. The fourth group was comprised of at-risk students who did not participate in any extracurricular activity. The researcher then compared each group to determine if a significant difference existed between the academic indicators between each of the groups. Analysis determined that at-risk students who participated in some form of activity have significantly better academic performance indicators than students who did not participate. In addition, there was a significant difference in the academic performance indicators of dual participants when compared to the other three groups.

The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. Book excerpt: Poor results on academic performance indicators at South African institutions of higher education have significant implications for institutions, requisite graduate skills and the country s economy. Institutions are, therefore, confronted with a need to be proactive in implementing strategies to deal with underprepared students and the challenges of articulation to higher education. To enhance student success, Alan Seidman s (2005) formula for retention was used as a basis for structuring the provisioning of student support initiatives at a university of technology. The formula provided for the early identification of students at risk, and the provision of early, intensive and continuous interventions. As a component of an early warning system to identify students at risk for academic underachievement, 4718 first-year students at the institution were assessed with a battery of instruments at the beginning of the academic year. The battery comprised the English Literacy Skills Assessment, Career Choice Questionnaire, Learning and Study Strategies Inventory, and Emotional Skills Assessment Process. The results of these instruments were used to refer students for relevant interventions. The study analysed the relationship between the results obtained in the instruments and three measures of first-year academic performance, namely, retention, percentage of subjects passed and average mark. Demographic variables and intervention programmes were also included as independent variables. The sample was grouped into two categories, first-time entering students and students who were repeating the first year. Using Pearsons Chi-square tests of independence, most of the independent variables indicated a significant relationship with at least one academic performance indicator for the first-time entering students. This finding supports the use of the instruments in the risk profiling evaluation for first-time entering students. Self- Testing, Study Aids, Empathy, and Self-esteem did not have a significant relationship with any academic performance measure. Amongst the students repeating, there were much fewer variables that had significant relationships with academic performance measures. The variables predicting academic underachievement were substantially reduced when entered into stepwise logistic regression models for both first-time entering students and students who were repeating. The models and associated tables may be utilised for profiling students to identify those at risk of academic underachievement and for using the profiles for the recommendation of necessary interventions.

Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not student, parent, and peer engagement factors that contribute to at-risk students' success in graduating from high school continue to be important in making the transition from high school to postsecondary education. The data set used was the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, which included 1994 data obtained two years after students' scheduled high school graduation. At-risk students exhibited two or more of six risk factors, including "family in the lowest socioeconomic quartile" or "held back a grade". Analysis used alternative statistical methodology, specifically regression analysis and the "odds ratios" produced by this procedure. Key findings indicated that: (1) students whose parents frequently discussed school-related matters and/or had high educational expectations were much more likely than other students to enroll in postsecondary education; (2) students who reported that most or all of their high school friends planned to attend college were far more likely to attend themselves; (3) participating in college preparation activities such as gathering information about financial aid increased the odds of enrolling in postsecondary education; and (4) moderate- to high-risk students participating in college outreach programs were more likely to attend college. Book excerpt: There has been a growing discussion in the fields of education and psychology about the relationship between social skill proficiency and academic excellence. However, the presence of extracurricular involvement as promoting both academic and social development has not been thoroughly explored. The most recent literature syntheses and meta-analyses on extracurricular activity participation were conducted in the 1980's. An updated review and quantitative look at the participation literature is due. The purpose of this study is to integrate participation studies from the 1990s and give summative information as to the impact of extracurricular activity participation on various educational and psycho-social characteristics. Of the 164 identified studies, 41 were included in these meta-analyses. The current analyses produced 6 different activity categories: general extracurricular activity, sports, work and vocational activities, performing arts, pro-social activities, and community-based activities. The current meta-analyses suggest student outcomes were significantly related to general extracurricular activity and pro-social activity participation. General activities and pro-social activities had the most impact on academic achievement, while performing arts and pro-social activities' participants reported the largest effect on identity and self esteem related outcomes. Sports and related activities (i.e. Cheerleading) were not as strongly linked to academic achievement indicators as anticipated and student workers had more negative outcomes than any other activity participants. In conclusion, the best outcomes for children and adolescents are brought about through well-built, developmentally appropriate structured activities. Moreover, the academic and social profits of extracurricular activities that have been examined in this study can be used to inform program planning and implementation.
