Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Midnight Mummer, and Other Poems One always thinks he has many things to say in his preface until he sets himself to the task. Then, he finds shockingly few things to say; especially in defense of another volume of poems Yet even near-poets are not cowards about their verses although they quake at thinking of any one else reading them: for men may see faults they themselves cannot correct. But these men furnish the stepping stones on which some very great singer may mount to an immortal stage; they hold the goal flags beyond which he must go if he is really to say the imperishable thing: and hence may be forgiven all their imperfections. For the spirit whose breath they speed is God's greatest gift to men. What could He plan better for us than the goodly boon of a great man? And to that man, what message could he impart better than a great thought? And, for that thought, what excellence could He desire higher than a great form? And, of great forms of expression of thought, what will compare with the gentle rhythm of musical words? That is why we cherish our poets as well as laugh at their counterfeits. We refuse to let them die. At the head of every national literature we place one of them as premier of all in the fine art of immortalizing thought. So even the near-poet has his uses and, for the sake of the music he hastens, may ask forgiveness for all his discords. The lute is not broken; it awaits the breath of a master; the master who has his own hour for making music that must last. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Double Night and Other Poems Before his blindness he had received the bare rudiments of an English education in the country schools of that day. Later he spent a year at the Kentucky Institute for the Blind, and fourteen months at the Ohio Institute, leaving the latter when about twenty years of age. Meanwhile he had applied himself earnestly to the study of music. His mental activity seems to have been stimulated by his deprivations. He read eagerly everything printed in raised type, and, until he lost his hearing, extended his knowledge of books with the aid of friends who enjoyed reading aloud to him. Of the poems in this volume, most were written after Mr. Heady's fortieth year. I have said they are almost unique in interest; nor do I use this term simply because their author is blind and deaf. They contain one of the most elaborate experiments in hexameter yet made by an English poet, and that, too, by an English poet entirely ignorant of the classic models. The grammarian, Noble Butler, once congratulated Mr. Heady on this fact, on the ground that a knowledge of Homeric and Virgilian hexameter could not but impede an English poet. Whether fortunate or unfortunate in this respect, Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Songs in the Night written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs in the Night: Other Poems The title of this little volume has been chosen from the circumstance that several of the poems here collected were originally suggested by passages in the Spiritual Canticles of St John of the Cross, whose use of the word Night, in a mystic sense, is too well known to require explanation. Where this has been the case, the particular passage is prefixed by way of motto, but (with the single exception of the Fountain of the Night) the poems are in no sense a version of the Spanish text. In one re spect, however, they follow its method, being for the most part written in the first person, as best fitted to convey the experience of each individual soul.
