Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generalized Lorenz (GL) curve differs from a Lorenz curve in that the former is a rescaled version of the latter. A GL curve represents the relationship between the average income computed from a cumulative percentage of the population and the corresponding cumulative percentage. GL dominance is a useful criterion for ranking GL curves either for an economy over time or for a number of economies at one point in time. Relative to a dominated GL curve, a dominating GL curve indicates both that total income for the population is higher and that it is more equally distributed. Hence, it is obviously more desirable in a certain social sense. While sound statistical tests are essential for making statistical inference about GL dominance from sample GL curve estimates, the lack of a suitable joint test procedure for GL dominance is an unsolved problem in income distribution literature. This paper aims at solving this problem and provides an illustrative empirical example to show how to apply this test procedure in empirical research.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Income Inequality Measurement by : Jacques Silber
Download or read book Handbook of Income Inequality Measurement written by Jacques Silber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amartya Sen "Equality," I spoke the word As if a wedding vow Ah, but I was so much older then, I am younger than that now. Thus sang Bob Dylan in 1964. Approbation of equality varies not only with our age (though it is not absolutely clear in which direction the values may shift over one's life time), but also with the spirit of the times. The 1960s were good years for singing in praise of equality. The spirit of the present times would probably be better reflected by melodies in admiration of the Federal Reserve System. And yet the technical literature on the evaluation and measurement of economic inequality has grown remarkably over the last three decades. Even as actual economic policies (especially in North America and Europe) have tended to move towards focusing on virtues other than the avoidance of economic inequality, the professional literature on assessing and gauging economic inequality has taken quite a jump forward. A great many different problems have been addressed and effectively sorted out, and new problems continue to be posed and analyzed. The Contents: A Review Jacques Silber has done a great service to the subject by producing this collection of admirablyhelpful and illuminating papers on different aspects of the measurement of income inequality. The reach of this collection is quite remarkable. Along with a thorough overview from the editor himself, the major areas in this complex field have been carefully examined and accessibly discussed.

Book Synopsis Empirical Likelihood Method in Survival Analysis by : Mai Zhou
Download or read book Empirical Likelihood Method in Survival Analysis written by Mai Zhou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical Likelihood Method in Survival Analysis explains how to use the empirical likelihood method for right censored survival data. The author uses R for calculating empirical likelihood and includes many worked out examples with the associated R code. The datasets and code are available for download on his website and CRAN. The book focuses on all the standard survival analysis topics treated with empirical likelihood, including hazard functions, cumulative distribution functions, analysis of the Cox model, and computation of empirical likelihood for censored data. It also covers semi-parametric accelerated failure time models, the optimality of confidence regions derived from empirical likelihood or plug-in empirical likelihood ratio tests, and several empirical likelihood confidence band results. While survival analysis is a classic area of statistical study, the empirical likelihood methodology has only recently been developed. Until now, just one book was available on empirical likelihood and most statistical software did not include empirical likelihood procedures. Addressing this shortfall, this book provides the functions to calculate the empirical likelihood ratio in survival analysis as well as functions related to the empirical likelihood analysis of the Cox regression model and other hazard regression models.

This book was released on 2008-09-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in the Preface to his famous Discourse on Inequality that “I consider the subject of the following discourse as one of the most interesting questions philosophy can propose, and unhappily for us, one of the most thorny that philosophers can have to solve. For how shall we know the source of inequality between men, if we do not begin by knowing mankind?” (Rousseau, 1754). This citation of Rousseau appears in an article in Spanish where Dagum (2001), in the memory of whom this book is published, also cites Socrates who said that the only useful knowledge is that which makes us better and Seneca who wrote that knowing what a straight line is, is not important if we do not know what rectitude is. These references are indeed a good illustration of Dagum’s vast knowledge, which was clearly not limited to the ?eld of Economics. For Camilo the ?rst part of Rousseau’s citation certainly justi?ed his interest in the ?eld of inequality which was at the centre of his scienti?c preoccupations. It should however be stressed that for Camilo the second part of the citation represented a “solid argument in favor of giving macroeconomic foundations to microeconomic behavior” (Dagum, 2001). More precisely, “individualism and methodological holism complete each other in contributing to the explanation of individual and social behavior” (Dagum, 2001).

Book Synopsis Poverty and Equity by : Jean-Yves Duclos
Download or read book Poverty and Equity written by Jean-Yves Duclos and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text addresses the understanding and alleviation of poverty, inequality, and inequity using a unique and broad mix of concepts, measurement methods, statistical tools, software, and practical exercises. Part I discusses basic fundamental issues of well-being and poverty measurement. Part II develops an integrated framework for measuring poverty, social welfare, inequality, vertical equity, horizontal equity, and redistribution. Part III presents and develops recent methods for testing the robustness of distributive rankings. Part IV discusses ways of using policy to alleviate poverty, improve welfare, increase equity, and assess the impact of growth. Part V applies the tools to real data. Most of the book’s measurement and statistical tools have been programmed in DAD, a well established and widely available free software program that has been tailored especially for income distribution analysis and is used by scholars, researchers, and analysts in nearly 100 countries worldwide. It requires basic understanding of calculus and statistics. Abdelkrim Araar and Jean-Yves Duclos teach economics at Université Laval in Québec City.
Book Synopsis Testing Lorenz Curves with Non-Simple Random Samples by : Buhong Zheng
Download or read book Testing Lorenz Curves with Non-Simple Random Samples written by Buhong Zheng and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple random sampling has been assumed in most statistical inference procedures developed to test Lorenz dominance and other partial ordering conditions. This note, using the Bahadur representation, derives the (asymptotic) covariance structures of the Lorenz and generalized Lorenz ordinates for stratified, cluster and multistage samples. The comparison of these covariance structures illustrates the necessity of taking the sampling method into account in inference testing.
Book Synopsis The Gini Methodology by : Shlomo Yitzhaki
Download or read book The Gini Methodology written by Shlomo Yitzhaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gini's mean difference (GMD) was first introduced by Corrado Gini in 1912 as an alternative measure of variability. GMD and the parameters which are derived from it (such as the Gini coefficient or the concentration ratio) have been in use in the area of income distribution for almost a century. In practice, the use of GMD as a measure of variability is justified whenever the investigator is not ready to impose, without questioning, the convenient world of normality. This makes the GMD of critical importance in the complex research of statisticians, economists, econometricians, and policy makers. This book focuses on imitating analyses that are based on variance by replacing variance with the GMD and its variants. In this way, the text showcases how almost everything that can be done with the variance as a measure of variability, can be replicated by using Gini. Beyond this, there are marked benefits to utilizing Gini as opposed to other methods. One of the advantages of using Gini methodology is that it provides a unified system that enables the user to learn about various aspects of the underlying distribution. It also provides a systematic method and a unified terminology. Using Gini methodology can reduce the risk of imposing assumptions that are not supported by the data on the model. With these benefits in mind the text uses the covariance-based approach, though applications to other approaches are mentioned as well.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mik16s Cs6rgO and David M. Mason initiated their collaboration on the topics of this book while attending the CBMS-NSF Regional Confer ence at Texas A & M University in 1981. Independently of them, Sandor Cs6rgO and Lajos Horv~th have begun their work on this subject at Szeged University. The idea of writing a monograph together was born when the four of us met in the Conference on Limit Theorems in Probability and Statistics, Veszpr~m 1982. This collaboration resulted in No. 2 of Technical Report Series of the Laboratory for Research in Statistics and Probability of Carleton University and University of Ottawa, 1983. Afterwards David M. Mason has decided to withdraw from this project. The authors wish to thank him for his contributions. In particular, he has called our attention to the reverse martingale property of the empirical process together with the associated Birnbaum-Marshall inequality (cf.,the proofs of Lemmas 2.4 and 3.2) and to the Hardy inequality (cf. the proof of part (iv) of Theorem 4.1). These and several other related remarks helped us push down the 2 moment condition to EX

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is a social fact of life for billions of people around the world. The developed countries abhor poverty, or seem to, for several reasons. Perhaps it is a blotch on their consciences. Perhaps there is a genuine desire to help those who are not prospering while others around them are. Perhaps they wish to pay lip service to the good cause of eliminating either poverty or the poor, whichever comes first. This book brings together new economic research on programs and policies related to poverty and its elimination or alleviation.
