Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book "Asymptotic Expansions for Ordinary Differential Equations" published in 1965 is out of print. In the almost 20 years since then, the subject has grown so much in breadth and in depth that an account of the present state of knowledge of all the topics discussed there could not be fitted into one volume without resorting to an excessively terse style of writing. Instead of undertaking such a task, I have concentrated, in this exposi tion, on the aspects of the asymptotic theory with which I have been particularly concerned during those 20 years, which is the nature and structure of turning points. As in Chapter VIII of my previous book, only linear analytic differential equations are considered, but the inclusion of important new ideas and results, as well as the development of the neces sary background material have made this an exposition of book length. The formal theory of linear analytic differential equations without a parameter near singularities with respect to the independent variable has, in recent years, been greatly deepened by bringing to it methods of modern algebra and topology. It is very probable that many of these ideas could also be applied to the problems concerning singularities with respect to a parameter, and I hope that this will be done in the near future. It is less likely, however, that the analytic, as opposed to the formal, aspects of turning point theory will greatly benefit from such an algebraization.

Book Synopsis Asymptotic methods in mechanics of solids by : Svetlana M. Bauer
Download or read book Asymptotic methods in mechanics of solids written by Svetlana M. Bauer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-05-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of solutions of singularly perturbed systems of equations and boundary value problems that are characteristic for the mechanics of thin-walled structures are the main focus of the book. The theoretical results are supplemented by the analysis of problems and exercises. Some of the topics are rarely discussed in the textbooks, for example, the Newton polyhedron, which is a generalization of the Newton polygon for equations with two or more parameters. After introducing the important concept of the index of variation for functions special attention is devoted to eigenvalue problems containing a small parameter. The main part of the book deals with methods of asymptotic solutions of linear singularly perturbed boundary and boundary value problems without or with turning points, respectively. As examples, one-dimensional equilibrium, dynamics and stability problems for rigid bodies and solids are presented in detail. Numerous exercises and examples as well as vast references to the relevant Russian literature not well known for an English speaking reader makes this a indispensable textbook on the topic.

Book Synopsis Singular Perturbations and Asymptotics by : Richard E. Meyer
Download or read book Singular Perturbations and Asymptotics written by Richard E. Meyer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics Research Center Symposia and Advanced Seminar Series: Singular Perturbations and Asymptotics covers the lectures presented at an Advanced Seminar on Singular Perturbation and Asymptotics, held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 28-30, 1980 under the auspices of the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin—Madison. The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and principles involved in singular perturbations and asymptotics, including boundary value problems, equations, perturbations, water waves, and gas dynamics. The selection first elaborates on basic concepts in the analysis of singular perturbations, limit process expansions and approximate equations, and results on singularly perturbed boundary value problems. Discussions focus on quasi-linear and nonlinear problems, semilinear systems, water waves, expansion in gas dynamics, asymptotic matching principles, and classical perturbation analysis. The text then takes a look at multiple solutions of singularly perturbed systems in the conditionally stable case and singular perturbations, stochastic differential equations, and applications. The book ponders on connection problems in the parameterless case; general connection-formula problem for linear differential equations of the second order; and turning-point problems for ordinary differential equations of hydrodynamic type. Topics include the comparison equation method, boundary layer flows, compound matrix method, asymptotic solution of the connection-formula problem, and higher order equations. The selection is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in singular perturbations and asymptotics.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Singular Perturbations by : Robert E. Jr. O'Malley
Download or read book Introduction to Singular Perturbations written by Robert E. Jr. O'Malley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Singular Perturbations provides an overview of the fundamental techniques for obtaining asymptomatic solutions to boundary value problems. This text explores singular perturbation techniques, which are among the basic tools of several applied scientists. This book is organized into eight chapters, wherein Chapter 1 discusses the method of matched asymptomatic expansions, which has been frequently applied to several physical problems involving singular perturbations. Chapter 2 considers the nonlinear initial value problem to illustrate the regular perturbation method, and Chapter 3 explains how to construct asymptotic solutions for general linear equations. Chapter 4 discusses scalar equations and nonlinear system, whereas Chapters 5 and 6 explain the contrasts for initial value problems where the outer expansion cannot be determined without obtaining the initial values of the boundary layer correction. Chapters 7 and 8 deal with boundary value problem that arises in the study of adiabatic tubular chemical flow reactors with axial diffusion. This monograph is a valuable resource for applied mathematicians, engineers, researchers, students, and readers whose interests span a variety of fields.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Analysis by : R. V. Gamkrelidze
Download or read book Mathematical Analysis written by R. V. Gamkrelidze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains three articles: "Asymptotic methods in the theory of ordinary differential equations" b'y V. F. Butuzov, A. B. Vasil'eva, and M. V. Fedoryuk, "The theory of best ap proximation in Dormed linear spaces" by A. L. Garkavi, and "Dy namical systems with invariant measure" by A. 'VI. Vershik and S. A. Yuzvinskii. The first article surveys the literature on linear and non linear singular asymptotic problems, in particular, differential equations with a small parameter. The period covered by the survey is primarily 1962-1967. The second article is devoted to the problem of existence, characterization, and uniqueness of best approximations in Banach spaces. One of the chapters also deals with the problem of the convergence of positive operators, inasmuch as the ideas and methods of this theory are close to those of the theory of best ap proximation. The survey covers the literature of the decade 1958-1967. The third article is devoted to a comparatively new and rapid ly growing branch of mathematics which is closely related to many classical and modern mathematical disciplines. A survey is given of results in entropy theory, classical dynamic systems, ergodic theorems, etc. The results surveyed were primarily published during the period 1956-1967.
