Book excerpt: Thermal infrared imaging has shown effective results as a diagnostic tool in breast cancer detection. It can be used as a complementary to traditional mammography. Asymmetry analysis are usually used to help detect abnormalities. However, in infrared imaging, this cannot be done without human interference. This paper proposes an automatic approach to asymmetry analysis in thermograms. It includes automatic segmentation and pattern classification. Hough transform is used to extract the four feature curves that can uniquely segment the left and right breasts. The feature curves include the left and the right body boundary curves, and the two parabolic curves indicating the lower boundaries of the breasts. Upon segmentation, unsupervised learning technique is applied to classify each segmented pixel into certain number of clusters. Asymmetric abnormalities can then be identified based on pixel distribution within the same cluster. Both segmentation and classification results are shown on images captured from Elliott Mastology Center.

The segmentation algorithm uses Hough transform coupled with Canny edge detector to identify four feature curves that define the segments. We propose two pattern classification algorithms, unsupervised clustering and supervised learning based on feature extraction.

Book excerpt: The identification and interpretation of the signs of breast cancer in mammographic images from screening programs can be very difficult due to the subtle and diversified appearance of breast disease. This book presents new image processing and pattern recognition techniques for computer-aided detection and diagnosis of breast cancer in its various forms. The main goals are: (1) the identification of bilateral asymmetry as an early sign of breast disease which is not detectable by other existing approaches; and (2) the detection and classification of masses and regions of architectural distortion, as benign lesions or malignant tumors, in a unified framework that does not require accurate extraction of the contours of the lesions. The innovative aspects of the work include the design and validation of landmarking algorithms, automatic Tabár masking procedures, and various feature descriptors for quantification of similarity and for contour independent classification of mammographic lesions. Characterization of breast tissue patterns is achieved by means of multidirectional Gabor filters. For the classification tasks, pattern recognition strategies, including Fisher linear discriminant analysis, Bayesian classifiers, support vector machines, and neural networks are applied using automatic selection of features and cross-validation techniques. Computer-aided detection of bilateral asymmetry resulted in accuracy up to 0.94, with sensitivity and specificity of 1 and 0.88, respectively. Computer-aided diagnosis of automatically detected lesions provided sensitivity of detection of malignant tumors in the range of [0.70, 0.81] at a range of falsely detected tumors of [0.82, 3.47] per image. The techniques presented in this work are effective in detecting and characterizing various mammographic signs of breast disease.

This original system has been designed to aid radiologists to detect breast cancer on mammograms. The system embodies attribute-driven segmentation in which the attributes of an image are extracted progressively in a step-by-step, hierarchical fashion. Global, low-level attributes obtained in the early stages are used to derive local, high-level attributes in later stages, leading to increasing refinement and accuracy in image segmentation and analysis. The proposed system can be characterized as: • a bootstrap engine driven by the attributes of the images; • a solid framework supporting the process of hierarchical segmentation; • a universal platform for the development and integration of segmentation and analysis techniques; and • an extensible database in which knowledge about the image is accumulated. Central to this system are three major components: 1. a series of applications for attribute acquisition; 2. a standard format for attribute normalization; and 3. a database for attribute storage and data exchange between applications. The first step of the automatic process is to segment the mammogram hierarchically into several distinctive regions that represent the anatomy of the breast. The adequacy and quality of the mammogram are then assessed using the anatomical features obtained from segmentation. Further image analysis, such as breast density classification and lesion detection, may then be carried out inside the breast region. Several domain-specific algorithms have therefore been developed for the attribute acquisition component in the system. These include: 1. automatic pectoral muscle segmentation; 2. adequacy assessment of positioning and exposure; and 3. contrast enhancement of mass lesions. An adaptive algorithm is described for automatic segmentation of the pectoral muscle on mammograms of mediolateral oblique (MLO) views.
