Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy Explained Upon Sir Isaac Newton's Principles, and Made Easy to Those Who Have Not Studied Mathematics: To Which Are Added, a Plain Method of Finding the Distances of All the Planets From the Sun, by the Transit of Venus Over the Sun's Disc, in the Year 1761: An Account of Mr. Horrox's Observation of the Transit of Venus, in the Year 1639 Aberration of a star, is a small apparent motion, occasioned by a sensible proportion between the velocity of light and that of the earth in its annual orbit. From this cause, every star will, in the course of a year, appear to describe a small ellipsis in the heavens, whose greater axis 40 and its lesser axis, perpendicular to 'the ecliptic, 40 x cos. Of star's lat. (to radius In astronomical calcu lations, where great accuracy is required, and the place of a star concerned, a correction on account of aberration, as well as on other accounts, ought to be applied to the star's place as found in the tables. This correction may readily be found by the following theorems; in which A the star's right ascension, D its declination, and S the Sun's longitude. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although transits of planets across the Sun are rare (only Mercury and Venus orbit the Sun closer than us, and so can transit the Suns disc) amateur astronomers can observe, record and image other kinds of transits that are much more frequent. This book first tells the fascinating story of the early scientific expeditions to observe transits. It then explains how to observe transits of all sorts - even transits of aircraft as they fly between the observer and the Sun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since man first looked towards the heavens, a great deal of effort has been put into trying to predict and explain the motions of the sun, moon and planets. Developments in man's understanding have been closely linked to progress in the mathematical sciences. Whole new areas of mathematics, such as trigonometry, were developed to aid astronomical calculations, and on numerous occasions throughout history, breakthroughs in astronomy have only been possible because of progress in mathematics. This book describes the theories of planetary motion that have been developed through the ages, beginning with the homocentric spheres of Eudoxus and ending with Einstein's general theory of relativity. It emphasizes the interaction between progress in astronomy and in mathematics, showing how the two have been inextricably linked since Babylonian times. This valuable text is accessible to a wide audience, from amateur astronomers to professional historians of astronomy.
