Advances in astronomy, such as the theories of Copernicus, the development of the telescope, and Galileo's discoveries and descriptions of the moon sparked intense debate in Early Modern literary discourse. The essays in this collection demonstrate that this discourse not only stimulated international discussion about lunar voyages and otherworldly habitation, but it also developed a political context in which these new discoveries and theories could correspond metaphorically to New World exploration and colonization, to socio-political unrest, and even to kingship and regicide.

Book excerpt: With reference to copious case studies, this book attempts to give a broad and comprehensive view of the multiplicity of forms taken by metaphor in physics. A diachronic presentation of the views hitherto advanced on the role of metaphor in the natural sciences provides an introduction to the crucial issues. By means of a broad definition of metaphor as a lexical, semantic, and conceptual phenomenon, metaphor is identified at various levels of physics discourse: in metatheory and methodology; in the sociology of the origin and evolution of science; in theory and conceptualization, including physics models; in education; and finally in linguistic expression, including terminology. Whereas historians and theoreticians of science reduce the question of metaphor in physics to the question of the role of scientific models, where one area of physics provides concepts and structures for another area, the perspective adopted here is that of cognitive semantics. The study inquires into the way in which concept-formation and terminology in physics avails itself of the metaphoric bent immanent in everyday language, conceptualizing abstract ideas in spatial terms, inanimate things as intelligent, measurable phenomena in terms of the visual. Attention is also given to the way in which metaphoric processes make it possible to integrate new knowledge into old and sometimes obsolete structures rather than eliminating those structures altogether.

Diesem Problem stellen sich die Autoren mit Beiträgen aus der Geschichtswissenschaft, der Kunst- und Religionsgeschichte, der Islamwissenschaft und Sinologie, der Ethnologie und den Literaturwissenschaften. In welchem Verhältnis standen diese beiden Expansionsbewegungen zueinander? In welcher Weise unterschied sich dadurch die frühneuzeitlich-europäische Expansion von Expansionen anderer Epochen und Regionen? Die im ersten Teil dieses Bandes versammelten Beiträge untersuchen Kontinuitäten und Brüche der frühneuzeitlichen europäischen Expansion, indem sie deren mittelalterlichen Voraussetzungen herausstellen und diese mit dem zeitgenössischen chinesischen, russischen und maghrebinisch-muslimischen Verständnis von Expansion vergleichen. Die wissenschaftshistorischen Studien des zweiten Teils wiederum zeigen, wie sehr die gegenseitige Verstärkung der beiden Expansions-Bewegungen die Auseinandersetzung mit antiken und mittelalterlichen Denktraditionen forcierte - eine Auseinandersetzung, die keineswegs als Bruch mit der Antike zu interpretieren ist. Comparable to modern satellite surveying (GPS), true to scale landscape representation is also indebted to the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge: the alliance of geodesists, mathematicians, instrument makers and painters. Artists had designed modern surveying systems long before new media drew on images from outer space. The exhibition "Mapping Spaces" examines, for the first time ever on this scale, the influence of early modern guide books in geography, the science of surveying and the construction of fortification on Dutch painting around 1650. The prelude to the project, developed at the University of Trier, is Pieter Snayers' large-format depiction of historical battle scenes, in which maps and landscape paintings are projected over one another so as to document the most recent developments in modern engineering, ballistics and the fortification construction. Over 220 exhibits, among them paintings, surveying instruments, graphics devices, books, maps and globes drawn from the most important collections of works, such as from the Prado (Madrid), the Louvre (Paris), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) or the Kunsthistorischen Museum (Vienna) testify to these new theses in pictorial science. The new mapping of an early modern area of knowledge is accompanied by contemporary works of art that thematize the influence of technological developments on our present-day perception of space.--Museum website.
