But the name Aston-Martin was rescued, first by Renwick & Bertelli, and then by Gordon Sutherland in 1933 who brought the company into the real world by realizing that if you wanted to go racing you needed to be backed up by a sound financial structure which was not constantly being drained by the apparent need to maintain a reputation by being seen in competition. By giving support to the many private owners, he did manage to keep the name before the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our fifth book on Aston Martin starts with the introduction in 1994 of the DB7. Many people saw it as a sexed up Jaguar, not a true Aston - also it had a pressed steel body instead of a hand-built aluminium one, and "they plan to make lots of them, cannot be an Aston", and so on. However, it was successful and 7,049 were made which was a fantastic achievement considering that since 1920 only some 12,000 cars of all types had been made. The new V12 DB9, made in the companys first purpose-built, up-to-date factory at Gaydon, restored the hand-built image but with added up-to-date engineering features.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Aston Martin the period 1981 to 1993 was a time of transition progressing from the DB body to the new Virage plus the takeover of the Company by Ford in the early 1990s. The fourth book in this series deals with the Gauntlet and Livanos period. These two rekindled the link with Zagato, who brought to life the V8 Zagato. The Lagonda V8 continued to keep their heads above water and they also gave support to a number of private racing teams. On the production front 1988 saw the brand new Virage, powered by a new 5.3 litre V8 and at the same time on the racing side there was the V8 AMR1 series of Group "C" racers. Money, however, was a problem, so when Ford made an offer Gauntlet and Martin wisely accepted. With Ford behind them, the V8 cars continued to increase in luxury and power and the AMR1 entered its first season of international racing. 1993 saw the establishment of Aston Martin based at the TWR works at Bloxham, near Banbury and it was from here that, in a year's time, an exciting new model would emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in a series of books on Aston Martin which deals with the period after the second-world war. Although the Company managed to survive the war, Gordon Sutherland didn't have enough funds to put into production the promising "Atom" prototype. David Brown was the next enthusiast to take the name forward, along with Lagonda, which he had also purchased. These were exciting times for Aston Martin which started with the 2-Litre - which evolved into the stylish DB2 - and the famous Italian-designed DB4. Next came the super-car era and the DB5, made famous by Agent 007, James Bond, and this was followed by the DB6, now more of a grand tourer than a sports car.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the third book in the series on Aston Martin, records the gradual development of the DBS. This title chronicles the various upheavals that occurred in the company between the years 1972, when Sir David Brown sold the company, its near certain death in 1974, and its revival by the Sprague-Minden-Curtis-Flather consortium. This group took the company to new realms with the mighty 400b.h.p. V8 Vantage, the Towns Lagonda V8 and paved the way to the Gauntlet-Livanos era. Stringent emission laws in the USA excluded the V8 until 1978, but the optimistic suggestions of numbers to be built never manifested itself, despite a ready market in the Arab states.

Book excerpt: Aston Martin is now more than a century old – and what a century it has been. Since its birth in London on the eve of the First World War, the company has experienced the highs of racing triumph – most famously in the 1959 Le Mans 24-hour race – and the lows of bankruptcy, yet throughout it all has been in the first rank of British marques. Published in association with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and written by enthusiast Richard Loveys, Aston Martin is a fully illustrated history of the company that has created some of the the world's best loved and most widely respected cars, including James Bond's iconic DB5. It covers the cars themselves, the personalities and talents who have shaped Aston Martin from owners to engineers, the drivers who have shared with the company in racing glory, and the centenary celebrations of 2013.

Book excerpt: It is amazing to think that time has passed by and that the second BMW "3 Series" has achieved such status that it warrants this special book on its 21st anniversary. Maybe it is due to the sheer longevity of its design, its ability to satisfy the keen driver or its iconic status - but, whatever it is, there is no doubt that the E30 is one car from the past that will stay with us into the future. It is a pending classic and prices for well kept models have started to escalate; furthermore, there is a core of well cared for cars out there requiring basic attention by their dedicated owners. As a result, there has never been a better time for a book of this sort. By focusing on the common faults which crop up repeatedly and by giving detailed, simple instructions regarding repairs, this book will be uniquely invaluable for owners who wish to try their hand at their own maintenance, especially those who may previously have been prevented from doing so by a lack of technical know-how or specific knowledge.

Book excerpt: Aston Martin is a marque that holds a special place in the British motor industry. As a manufacturer of cars for over 100 years, its history is tied up with the British psyche, and the marque holds a special place in the hearts of all motoring enthusiasts. This book charts the history of Aston Martin from its early days in central London, as Banford and Martin, through the Bertelli years in Feltham and the post-war David Brown years at Newport Pagnell to the current day with its purpose-built, state-of-the-art factory in Gaydon, Warwickshire. Now seen as an iconic luxury British sports car manufacturer, Aston Martin has been designing, manufacturing and racing cars for over 100 years, almost continuously. Known for combining quality, style and performance in its products, the company has often struggled to balance these attributes with financial success. Fortunately, over the years generous investors who recognize the potential in the company have always been on hand to rescue and perpetuate the brand. Looking at the engines, the cars, the people, the business and car owners, this book tells the story of a quintessentially British marque.
