Every article included in the synthesis falls short of fully examining potential correlation between social support and SMV achieving academic success. However, most articles included in the synthesis explore a single aspect of social support and correlated the effects with academic persistence or academic success.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that academic achievement in higher education has been of interest to psychological and educational researchers for decades, we know very little about the experience of the nearly two-million veterans attending college (DiRamio, Ackerman, & Mitchell, 2008; Robbins et al., 2004). In the current study, 254 student-veterans attending 4-year institutions of higher education across the United States completed the Hope Scale (Snyder et al., 1991), Student-Life Stress Inventory (Gadzella, Fullwood, & Ginther, 1991), Social Provisions Scale (Cutrona & Russell, 1987), and a demographic questionnaire to determine the impact of academic and combat-related stress on academic achievement, as well as the moderating affects of hope and social support. No direct relationships between academic or combat-related stress and academic achievement were detected. However, the results indicated hope was a significant predictor of academic achievement. Hope was also positively correlated with social support and negatively correlated with academic stress. Social support was negatively correlated with academic stress. Other significant findings are reported in the results section.

Book excerpt: Student veteran achievement in community college has received increased attention this past decade with the surge in enrollment by returning military personnel and retired veterans. Similar to previous eras, today’s student veterans seek post-war educational opportunities at postsecondary institutions. Yet unlike previous student veteran enrollment surges, colleges and universities currently lack adequate understanding of student veterans and how to effectively enable their success. This study adapted De La Garza’s (2015) Conceptual Model of Student Veteran Achievement into three separate path models with latent constructs. The intrinsic interest, college GPA, and credits earned models were each geared for predicting student veteran success and were analyzed using factor analysis and a series of multiple regression analyses. Additionally, two new factor constructs related to student veteran sense of belonging were added to each of the models in support of previous research citing the benefits of sense of belonging on postsecondary achievement. The Community College Survey of Men (CCSM) provided a student veteran dataset of 481 respondents and the study also employed a subset of 250 student veterans of color respondents from the same dataset for analysis across the three models. The findings indicated that using the intrinsic interest and college GPA models in tandem, provided a comprehensive analysis versus employing a cognitive or noncognitive model alone. The dual-model approach significantly predicted student veteran and student veterans of color achievement while the credits earned model provided weak predictions. Sense of belonging was critical in predicting student veteran achievement and further reversed or dampened negative effects influencing the ultimate endogenous variable in each of the three models. Compared to the student veteran achievement models, the student veterans of color models were significantly affected by stressful events and also less impacted by noncognitive variables than the traditional cognitive measures of postsecondary success. Future research using the intrinsic interest and college GPA models will help define programs and policies for other student veteran subgroups including student veteran women, student veterans with disabilities or impairments, and specific student veteran military branches or duty statuses. Current programs and policies should leverage and encourage sense of belonging and strive to increase veteran representation among postsecondary faculty and administrators. Dedicated support of Student Veterans Associations and likeminded organizations are considered vehicles for increasing and enhancing student veteran sense of belonging.

The purpose of this dissertation was to expand the literature on student veterans' campus experiences (Ackerman, DiRamio, & Garza-Mitchell, 2009; DiRamio, Ackerman, & Mitchell, 2008; Elliott, Gonzalez, & Larsen, 2011; Persky & Oliver, 2011). First, it examined the extent to which mental and physical health issues, combat experience, and social support predicted negative experiences on college campuses among Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) student veterans. As predicted, results suggest that student veterans' negative campus experiences (such as feelings as if they did not fit on campus) were intensified by their mental and physical health issues, extent of combat experience and lack of social support from loved ones. These findings were further explored by conducting focus groups with UNR and TMCC student veterans who indicated that interactions with faculty and non-veteran student sometimes exacerbated their campus experiences. Because faculty-student interactions impacted student veterans' experiences, UNR and TMCC faculty members' perceptions of student veterans and their cultural sensitivity toward their needs were also examined. To date, only one study has examined factors which impact faculty-student interactions (Barnard-Brak, Bagby, Jones & Sulak, 2011). The authors, however, did not specifically examine the cultural sensitivity of faculty members. Results of the UNR and TMCC survey illustrated that the majority of faculty members held positive impressions of student veterans; however, TMCC faculty members reported more culturally sensitive behaviors. Findings of each study were used to develop a detailed list of implications for NSHE policy change. Recommendations for policy reform are discussed.

Very few of today's veterans, however, attend our nation's most selective institutions. Military-connected students constitute about 5% of the total college-going population, but make up only 2% or less of the student body at Ivy League and Ivy Plus institutions. The purpose of this narrative study was to understand the experiences of these talented few student veterans, with a focus on undergraduates. The primary research questions were: 1) How do members of the current generation of veterans make the transition from the military to the Ivy League? 2) How are these veterans faring, academically and socially, in what is arguably the most challenging sector of higher education? A series of in-depth interviews with four veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines studying for undergraduate degrees at three different Ivy League schools was undertaken to address these questions. The resulting four biographies were interpreted using Vacchi and Berger's (2014) adaptation of Bronfenbrenner's (1989, 1995) ecological systems theory and from a life course perspective. Findings revealed that the veterans carefully planned their transition from the military to the academy, and eagerly sought and accepted transition support. Academically, the self-discipline learned in the military was most important to the four Ivy League student veterans' success. Social support from other veterans was also important, but to varying degrees. The four student veterans all shared insights gained from their military experience with civilian peers in Ivy League classrooms, though they disclosed their veteran status only selectively in social situations. These exchanges, formal and informal, were mutually beneficial. While some Ivy League institutions are taking steps to attract and better support military-connected students, from a public policy perspective, elite higher education is not doing enough to help close the civil-military gap in American society. To the extent that elite institutions cannot or will not accommodate more veterans as non-traditional undergraduates, a greater focus on ROTC programs could help achieve this goal, as could admitting more family members of long-serving military personnel.
