Once the water has been thoroughly cleansed, clarifiers remove both any remaining pollutants and the chemicals added by the treatment process (such as chlorine), so water can be safely released back into the local environment. Current US water treatment facility expenditure exceeds $25 billion The field's established authority on clarifier design Updated to cover the latest modeling software, equipment selection, and common design "traps" Details successful design approaches in Europe and Japan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban population growth dramatically alters material and energy fluxes in the affected areas, with concomitant changes in landscape, altered fluxes of water, sediment, chemicals and pathogens and increased releases of waste heat. These changes then impact on urban ecosystems, including water resources and result in their degradation. Such circumstances make the provision of water services to urban populations even more challenging. Changing weather patterns, rising temperature and large variations in precipitation contr- ute to increased damages, caused by weather related disasters, including floods. Ones of the major contributors to increasing flood peaks are land use changes and particularl- urban development. Consequently, there is a need to look for low environmental impact land development and to manage runoff in urban areas by storm water management. Much progress in the management of urban waters has been achieved in the most - vanced jurisdictions, but much more remains to be done. In this respect the EC Water Framework Directive can provide some guidance. Urban water management issues are particularly important in the countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe. During the last decade political, economical and social changes in the countries under transition have influenced almost every element of the public sector, including water services. There is an urgent need for exchange of information among various countries on this issue and for identification of best approaches to achieving this transition.

Book excerpt: This Report presents information on the current state of knowledge of the origins, occurrence, nature and effects of sewer solids for use by engineers, scientists, administrators and water quality planners for the planning, design and operation of sewerage systems. The report addresses both sewer maintenance requirements and environmental protection issues. Increasing environmental standards, coupled with public expectations, have led to stringent water quality standards. In response to this, it has been necessary to develop new methodologies and computer based analytical techniques to model and understand the performance of all aspects of waste water systems. Fundamental to these techniques is the understanding of the way in which sewer solids contribute to the poor performance of wastewater systems and consequential environmental damage. The information presented in this Report about the origins, nature, movement, hydraulic and polluting effects of solids in sewers has enabled strategies and rules to be developed for the management of sewerage systems to minimise the deleterious effects of these solids and associated pollutants. This book was released on 1997-08-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control and Treatment of Combined Sewer Overflows Second Edition Edited by Peter E. Moffa In cities where storm and sanitary sewers are operated as one system, storm runoff overflows remain the most common potential source of untreated human waste in the water supply—and the single biggest obstacle to achieving the swimmability goals of the 1972 Clean Water Act Amendments. Communities upgrading old systems in order to provide safe, EPA-compliant water to their growing populations face both logistical and financial challenges. Yet, in the last decade significant advances in combined sewage overflow (CSO) abatement have been realized. The National CSO Control Strategy was published in 1989, with the final CSO policy approved in 1994. The EPA has intensified research and development; receiving-water impacts have been quantified; more cost-effective plans, prototypes, and facilities have been tested and implemented; and the water supplies in over a dozen U.S. cities are showing dramatically diminished CSO pollution levels. This revised edition of Control and Treatment of Combined Sewer Overflows takes into account recent advances in research, planning, and practice to be the single most authoritative and up-to-date resource on CSO abatement. Written by expert CSO consultant Peter Moffa and a contributing team of top engineers, the book provides both the mathematical and analytical tools necessary for modeling current sewer systems and developing workable CSO abatement strategies. Control and Treatment of Combined Sewer Overflows, Second Edition Features: A condensed overview of federal CSO policy (watershed) Guidelines for minimum control, long-term control planning, screening and ranking, project funding, CSO monitoring and modeling, and performance measurement Fully updated discussions of mathematical models for combined sewer systems A wide range of practical control and treatment technology systems—many developed since 1989, and Recent Case Studies—a complete section on cost-effect analysis showing how a number of U.S. cities enact effective storage, abatement, and disinfection plans. This edition features new case studies on Rouge River, Charlotte, NC, and Decatur, IL, plus updated reports from Onondaga County, NY, and Washington, DC. Control and Treatment of Combined Sewer Overflows, Second Edition is an essential reference for wastewater and sanitary engineers, as well as city planners and administrators responsible for wastewater treatment. It is also the ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in wastewater and environmental engineering.
