Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cook Inlet Basin is the source for all of the natural gas used in south-central Alaska. The estimated ultimate recovery from existing Cook Inlet gas fields is approximately 8.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) and the proven reserves remaining on January 1, 2004 were 1.8 tcf. It will be difficult to meet the peak demand for gas in south-central Alaska after 2009. Cook Inlet Basin contains vast quantities of unconventional gas resources in tight sands. Resources-in-place and producible gas reserves from the tight sands are unknown. It is likely that these tight sands will be developed as additional gas reserves and will be produced along with the high permeability conventional gas reserves in order to meet both local and export demands. The objectives of this study are to quantify the distribution of tight gas sands; to estimate the resources in place and producible gas reserves in the Cook Inlet Basin; and to predict the post-stimulation gas production. Rate transient analysis, well log analysis and reservoir stimulation analysis were therefore conducted on selected key tight sand wells. Results indicate that the tight gas can play an important role in meeting south-central Alaska's gas demand beyond 2009"--Leaf iv.

Book excerpt: "Tight gas sands present a considerable development challenge due to reservoir heterogeneity and poor permeability. Successful exploitation of tight gas reservoirs requires an understanding of the factors controlling their porosity and permeability (P&P) as well as the geological factors influencing the distribution of key facies. Initial statistical analysis of published petrographic data of Cook Inlet tight gas prospects reconfirmed the effect of mechanical compaction on porosity. A suitable correlation between porosity and depth for very fine to fine (VF-F) grain tight gas sandstone was developed. Though permeability was weakly correlated with porosity, the positive effect of macropore (>20 microns across) percentage on permeability was evident. Thus, a suitable permeability-macropore correlation was developed for non-cemented, VF-F grain, and fine-medium to medium grain sandstone samples. These results help clarify the factors that control the porosity and permeability of Cook Inlet tight gas prospects. Static connectivity and effective static connectivity analysis of stochastic channel facies model representing low sinuosity river deposits, as found in the Cook Inlet Region in Alaska, shows the high uncertainty involved in static connectivity analysis at lower channel facies volume percentage. However, channel deposits of sinuosity 1.1 show best static connectivity with a drainage area of 50 acres. Above 70%-75% of channel volume, the role of channel dimension in static connectivity is limited and 100% static connectivity is achievable. This facies modeling assists in predicting the factors that control the static connectivity of low sinuosity tight gas reservoirs in Kenai Group of Formations. Moreover, this static connectivity analysis will help determine recommended well spacing and well type, orientation, and suitable completion techniques to enhance recovery efficiency in Cook Inlet tight gas sands"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Normally in tight gas sands, water production is not a problem but in such low permeability reservoirs it is difficult to produce gas at commercial flow rates. Since water is more viscous than gas, very little water is normally produced in low permeability reservoirs. The production of large volumes of water from tight gas sands, say 50-100 bbls of water per MMcf of gas constitutes a cause for concern. High water production (>200 bbls of water per MMcf of gas) has been observed in the low permeability Cotton Valley sands in the Caspiana, Elm Grove and Frierson fields of North Louisiana. This research evaluates water production in the above tight gas sands using field data provided by Matador Resource, a member of the Crisman Institute in Texas A & M University. The research is aimed at providing realistic reservoir scenarios of excess water production in tight gas sands. Log analysis, property trends and well production profiles have been used in establishing the different scenarios. The reservoir simulation results and the production trends show a possible water source from faults and fractures connecting the Travis Peak/Smackover sands to the Cotton Valley sands. An improved understanding of the reservoir would help in further field development.

Book excerpt: The volume of future tight gas reserve additions is difficult to estimate because of uncertainties in the characterization and extent of the resource and the performance and cost-effectiveness of stimulation and production technologies. Ongoing R & D by industry and government aims to reduce the risks and costs of producing these tight resources, increase the certainty of knowledge of their geologic characteristics and extent, and increase the efficiency of production technologies. Some basins expected to contain large volumes of tight gas are being evaluated as to their potential contribution to domestic gas supplies. This report describes the results of one such appraisal. This analysis addresses the tight portions of the Eastern Greater Green River Basin (Sand Wash and Great Divide Subbasins in Northwestern Colorado and Southwestern Wyoming, respectively), with respect to estimated gas-in-place, technical recovery, and potential reserves. Geological data were compiled from public and proprietary sources. The study estimated gas-in-place in significant (greater than 10 feet net sand thickness) tight sand intervals for six distinct vertical and 21 areal units of analysis. These units of analysis represent tight gas potential outside current areas of development. For each unit of analysis, a ''typical'' well was modeled to represent the costs, recovery and economics of near-term drilling prospects in that unit. Technically recoverable gas was calculated using reservoir properties and assumptions about current formation evaluation and extraction technology performance. Basin-specific capital and operating costs were incorporated along with taxes, royalties and current regulations to estimate the minimum required wellhead gas price required to make the typical well in each of unit of analysis economic.

Book excerpt: This analysis represents a comparison of nine stratigraphic unit-areas exhibiting the most common characteristics affecting hydraulic fracturing and further screening for GRI priority research areas. This report briefly describes each of the nine unit-areas, lists the acquired engineering data, shows the method used for evaluating and ranking the characteristics and finally displays composite matrix information for the nine unit-areas. Of the unit-areas analyzed, three resulted in a greater number of higher ranking for research-attractive reservoir stimulation characteristics. The three considered to offer the most potential for technology extrapolation are the Cozzette and Corcoran Sandstones of the southern Piceance Basin, the Travis Peak/Hosston Formation of the East Texas/North Louisisan Salt Basins and the Olmos Formation of the Maverick Basin. Additional criteria may be combined with this analysis by GRI in selecting priority research areas.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of work services performed by CER Corporation during May 1982 through July 1986 for an on-going Gas Research Institute (GRI) program which began in 1979. The objective of GRI's Tight Gas Sands Program is to collect and analyze field data to characterize tight gas sand formations, develop technology to define the shape and extent of a hydraulic fracture in the formation and transfer this technology to industry. The achievements of CER Corporation during the term of this contract contributed significantly to implementation and success of GRI's Program. These achievements include: (1) Selecting priority research areas in the Travis Peak/Hosston Formation of East Texas and the Rollins, Cozzette and Corcoran Sandstones of Northwest Colorado, (2) Planning and implementing field data acquisition programs on wells operated by companies interested in participating in the research (i.e., co-op wells). Most commonly, these data acquisition programs included cores and geophysical wireline logs form wells drilled to the Travis Peak Formation (East Texas area), (3) Administrating subcontracts to organizations capable of providing a key research product or service to the program, and (4) Transfering technology developed in the program to industry and research organizations through periodic publication of a technical report titled "In Focus - Tight Gas Sands."
