Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Odours have become a priority concern for facility operators, engineers and urban planners who deal with waste and industrial treatment plants. The subjectivity of smell perception, its variability due to frequency and weather conditions, and the complex nature of the substances involved, has long hampered the regulation of odour emissions. This book provides a comprehensive framework for the assessment, measurement and monitoring of odour emissions, and covers: Odour characterization and exposure effects Instruments and methods for sampling and measurement Strategies for odour control Dispersion modelling for odour exposure assessment Odour regulations and policies Procedures for odour impact assessment Case studies: Wastewater treatment, composting, industrial and CAFO plants, and landfill Intended for researchers in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, and civil engineering, this book is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in wastewater treatment, environmental and air analysis, and waste management.

Book excerpt: Recently the development of odour measurement, regulation and control techniques has made great progress, with new and updated standards and regulations for odour control and measurement in Europe and Australasia; in the United States, odour was listed as one of the key areas for action by the Agricultural Air Quality Task Force. In these circumstances, it is clear that a uniform systematic approach to quantifying and solving odour problems worldwide is highly desirable. This motivated the 1st IWA International Conference on Odours and VOCs, with its focus on ?measurement, regulation and control techniques?. The conference emphasised the need to standardise the approaches to odour measurement, to quantify odour impact from various emission sources for regulatory purposes, and to devise ways of alleviating odour impact on local communities. These subjects are of concern nationally and internationally because of the decreasing tolerance to such impacts by local communities and the current lack of effective solutions. From the papers presented 42 have been selected for these proceedings, dealing with olfactometry; field observation and sampling; odour regulations; physical treatment; odour dispersion modelling; volatilisation models; animal farming odours; manure treatment; biofilters; odour control for anaerobic ponds; and H2S removal. They represent the latest work of leading experts from European, Asian, North American, Australian and New Zealand universities, agencies and organisations and will prove a major resource for all interested in the research and practice of odour measurement and control.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complaints regarding environmental odours are common. Such complaints may be reported as a nuisance or related to health effects. Odour complaints are difficult to manage and resolve. One of the reasons for this is that odours are complex entities and difficult to characterise. In addition, there is uncertainty regarding the impact odours can have on health. The objectives of this research were to create a knowledge-base on the subject of odours, to examine the relationship between odours and health effects and to develop tools and guidance to improve the assessment and management of odour related incidents. The research was generated by the investigation of a series of odour incidents where the Health Protection Agency has been asked for advice on the health protection impacts of odours. In addition, an experimental study investigating exposure patterns in different environmental settings was carried out. A model of olfactory response was applied to the experimental data in order to gain insights into that process and the potential for odour complaints. The research has developed improved methods for the determination and estimation of population exposure to chemicals involved in, or associated with, odour complaints to aid the assessment of health effects. The knowledge leads to new approaches to community level hazard assessment for odour and is beneficial for health professionals and regulators of environmental odours. The results of this project have important implications for the way in which odour incidents are managed and with respect to the regulation of odorous emissions. In addition to investigating exposure assessment, a toolkit was developed to assist dealing with odour related issues. This toolkit improves the public health response to odour incidents, helping to ensure that odours pose a minimal risk to public health.

Book excerpt: Wastewater treatment works have the potential to generate unpleasant odours, which can results in annoyance and consequently have a detrimental effect on a local population. As a result 'odour control and prevention' has become an important consideration both in the management of existing facilities and in the design and gaining of planning consent for new works. Odours in Wastewater Treatment provides readers with a detailed discussion on the basic principles involved in the formation of volatile compounds in wastewater treatment. Accounts are given of recent developments in the sampling and measurement of odours, practical examples in the prediction and dispersion of odorous emissions are offered and an overview of the technologies currently used to contain and treat odorous compounds presented. Contents Introduction Odours associated with wastewater treatment Odour sampling and measurement Assessment and prediction of nuisance odours Odour control and treatment

Book excerpt: A new edition of the trusted guide on commonly used statistical distributions Fully updated to reflect the latest developments on the topic, Statistical Distributions, Fourth Edition continues to serve as an authoritative guide on the application of statistical methods to research across various disciplines. The book provides a concise presentation of popular statistical distributions along with the necessary knowledge for their successful use in data modeling and analysis. Following a basic introduction, forty popular distributions are outlined in individual chapters that are complete with related facts and formulas. Reflecting the latest changes and trends in statistical distribution theory, the Fourth Edition features: A new chapter on queuing formulas that discusses standard formulas that often arise from simple queuing systems Methods for extending independent modeling schemes to the dependent case, covering techniques for generating complex distributions from simple distributions New coverage of conditional probability, including conditional expectations and joint and marginal distributions Commonly used tables associated with the normal (Gaussian), student-t, F and chi-square distributions Additional reviewing methods for the estimation of unknown parameters, such as the method of percentiles, the method of moments, maximum likelihood inference, and Bayesian inference Statistical Distributions, Fourth Edition is an excellent supplement for upper-undergraduate and graduate level courses on the topic. It is also a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the fields of engineering, economics, operations research, and the social sciences who conduct statistical analyses.

Such assessments would benefit from the development of parameters that could be used to quantify and reflect the magnitudes of odour impacts experience by the community. Therefore, numerous parameters that can be used to assess odour impacts have been proposed in this research. These parameters account for variations in odour concentration, probability of response, degree of annoyance and population density that clearly influence the degree of impact of an odorous emission on a community. Most of these parameters require the evaluation of areas enclosed within contours and volumes under contours and, as such, are calculation intensive. In order to simplify the calculation of these parameters, algorithms have been developed and implemented into a user-friendly interface called OdorImp. This software was tested by applying it to three sets of synthetic data and two sets of data arising from actual case-studies. Comparisons were made between the results from OdorImp and exact values derived from simple cases and other values calculated using a commercial contour-evaluation program. It was demonstrated that the algorithms implemented in OdorImp are accurate and can be used to reliably evaluate the proposed odour impact parameters." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precautionary principle puts forward the 'commonsense' notion that decision-makers should be cautious when assessing potential health or environmental harms in the absence of the full scientific facts. It is now a well-established tenet of environmental law. The debate has turned to its legal implementation, especially its application 'in practice'. The Precautionary Principle in Practice - Environmental decision-making and scientific uncertainty focuses on these issues. It considers how decision-makers can assess threats to health or the environment when the available scientific evidence is sparse and discusses the types of 'uncertainties' that bring the precautionary principle into play.Peel uses detailed case studies which examine the implementation of the precautionary principle in actual decision-making scenarios: fisheries management; risk assessment for genetically modified organisms; and environmental impact assessment for development applications. She demonstrates an approach that takes account of variable uncertainty issues and can be adapted to different circumstances to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the potential threats to health or the environment. Jackie Peel has a background in both science and law. She took a BSC/LLB with 1st class honours at the University of Queensland and holds an LLM from New York University where she studied in 1999-2000 as a Fulbright Scholar. She is now is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Melbourne.
