Book Synopsis A guide to forest–water management by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people worldwide lack adequate access to clean water to meet basic needs, and many important economic activities, such as energy production and agriculture, also require water. Climate change is likely to aggravate water stress. As temperatures rise, ecosystems and the human, plant, and animal communities that depend on them will need more water to maintain their health and to thrive. Forests and trees are integral to the global water cycle and therefore vital for water security – they regulate water quantity, quality, and timing and provide protective functions against (for example) soil and coastal erosion, flooding, and avalanches. Forested watersheds provide 75 percent of our freshwater, delivering water to over half the world’s population. The purpose of A Guide to Forest–Water Management is to improve the global information base on the protective functions of forests for soil and water. It reviews emerging techniques and methodologies, provides guidance and recommendations on how to manage forests for their water ecosystem services, and offers insights into the business and economic cases for managing forests for water ecosystem services. Intact native forests and well-managed planted forests can be a relatively cheap approach to water management while generating multiple co-benefits. Water security is a significant global challenge, but this paper argues that water-centered forests can provide nature-based solutions to ensuring global water resilience.

Book Synopsis Land Use and Climate Change by : Suresh Chand Rai
Download or read book Land Use and Climate Change written by Suresh Chand Rai and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent past, large scale conversions of forests to other land-uses in developed and developing countries in response to high population growth has been observed. As a consequence, this has disrupted the hydrological cycle and a great change in climate is envisaged. The land-use change from forest to the other usage has been quite conspicuous in the last few decades in the Indian Himalayan region. Land-use/cover change is emerging as a central issue within the community concerned with global environment. This concern is driven by the contributions that land-use/cover transformations make a wide variety of changes. The recent interest in land-use change has generated effort to understand the inter-relationship between land-use/cover and climate change. Most of the global environmental problems fall within the gambit of land-use/cover change and require a thorough understanding of its causes and consequences. Understanding of land-use/cover and climate change is important for the sustainable development and to evolve strategies for the mitigation of climate change at local, regional and global levels. This work is basically designed to familiarise the graduate, post-graduate and research students with the basic knowledge of land-use/cover and its impact on climate.

Book Synopsis Decade-to-Century-Scale Climate Variability and Change by : National Research Council
Download or read book Decade-to-Century-Scale Climate Variability and Change written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-12-24 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society today may be more vulnerable to global-scale, long-term, climate change than ever before. Even without any human influence, past records show that climate can be expected to continue to undergo considerable change over decades to centuries. Measures for adaption and mitigation will call for policy decisions based on a sound scientific foundation. Better understanding and prediction of climate variations can be achieved most efficiently through a nationally recognized "dec-cen" science plan. This book articulates the scientific issues that must be addressed to advance us efficiently toward that understanding and outlines the data collection and modeling needed.

Book excerpt: The report offers a simple framework for policy analysis by identifying three forest types: frontiers and disputed lands; lands beyond the agricultural frontier; and, mosaic lands where forests and agriculture coexist. It collates geographic and economic information for each type that will help formulate poverty-reducing forest policy.
