This project addresses this gap by investigating the behavior of steel girder bridges subjected to vehicular collision through (1) performing non-destructive field testing, (2) developing validated numerical models, and (3) performing parametric investigations to extend research findings. Field testing was performed using Digital Image Correlation (DIC)-a portable, non-destructive, photographic measurement technique that can measure three-dimensional strains based on pattern recognition. Ultimately, the project culminated in assessment guidelines for bridge inspectors to evaluate damaged bridges for repair. This project can benefit Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) business processes by potentially reducing the number or amount of repairs, leading to direct cost savings and longer lifespans for bridges.

Book excerpt: Vehicle collisions with bridge piers can result in significant damage to the support pier and potentially lead to catastrophic failure of the whole structure. The Nation's aging infrastructure suggests that many structures no longer meet current design standards, placing many bridge susceptible to failure if subjected to an extreme loading event. This research aims to study the structural response of reinforced concrete bridge piers subjected to vehicle collisions. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to observe the causes of shear and bending failures of bridge piers subjected to vehicle collision. Parameters, such as pier diameter, transverse reinforcement spacing, vehicle impact velocity, pile cap height, and multi-pier configuration, are investigated in this study. The finite element code LS-DYNA is utilized to simulate and analyze the vehicle collisions to obtain accurate and detailed results. The vehicle models offered by the National Crash Analysis Center and the National Transportation Research Center, Inc. are used to conduct this research. The finite element modeling controls and material properties are validated by conducting an impact drop hammer experiment. The bridge pier collision models are validated by comparing vehicle damage and impact forces with published research results. Conservation of energy is also checked to assure stability within the impact simulation. A sensitivity analysis suggests that different pier parameters have a profound effect on failure modes and distribution of impact forces. Piers with large stiffness result in high impact forces, low lateral displacements, and high resistance to shear forces and bending moments. A performance-based analysis shows that bridge piers can be designed using damage ratios associated with particular damage states.

Book excerpt: The increasing occurrence of over-height vehicle collisions with bridges in the United States leads to concern about the damage due to lateral impact to bridge superstructures by over-height vehicles. However, this issue is not fully addressed in current bridge specifications. Previous researchers have conducted a number of small-scale tests to study the impact process. Also, finite element method (FEM) has largely been used to analyze the complicated collision mechanism. A full-scale lateral impact testing facility was designed and built on a construction site in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. An AASHTO Type-I prestressed concrete (PC) girder and a Hybrid Composite Beam (HCB) bridge were tested using this facility, which led to a realistic level of damage and mechanism analysis of bridge superstructures under lateral impact loading as described in this dissertation. The failure of the PC girder was first introduced by punching shear around the impact zone. With the penetration of the impactor, the damaged impact zone behaved as a "hinge" which moved upward due to the heavy weight of both overhangs. HCB bridge experienced no global failure but only local damages of the FRP shell around the impact zone. Impact energy was mostly absorbed through strain energy of the tension reinforcement and the low-density foam and dissipated through local damage of the FRP shell. Commercial software ABAQUS/Explicit was used to develop FE model of the PC girder and the FE results were compared with the experimental results. Parametric study was also performed to evaluate the behavior of the PC girder under different impact conditions.
