Book excerpt: Reintroduction of native fish stocks is an important management tool used to mitigate the effects of invasive species and loss of habitat. A common reintroduction tool is the use of hatchery fish to create or supplement native populations in areas of their historic range. However, the low survival and poor performance of some hatchery outplants is an issue for hatchery reintroductions, as broodstocks may be limited. As a result, there has been a recent effort to develop 'conservation hatcheries' that employ hatchery rearing strategies that might improve the effectiveness of hatchery reintroduction efforts. This study developed and evaluated the effectiveness of enriched hatchery rearing strategies on increasing effectiveness of hatchery reintroductions for inland salmonids. Three hatchery rearing treatments of varying complexity were developed for rearing trials using westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Fish were reared in the hatchery for 60 days and various performance assessments were compared to evaluate behavioral, morphological, and physiological differences among the rearing treatments. A second 60 day rearing period using westslope cutthroat trout was followed by an outplant assessment. Fish were reared in the same three hatchery treatments and at the end of the hatchery-rearing period fish were placed into rearing ponds. Outplanted fish were left in the ponds with no artificial feed or predation relief. After 2 months in the ponds, fish were removed and their survival and growth were analyzed. Growth and survival in the hatchery were similar among the rearing treatments for both species. The most complex treatment was associated with increased cover seeking behavior, reduced aggression, higher fin condition, and improved coloration. Survival results from the outplanted fish were compromised because of fish movement; however, there was evidence that the most complex treatment may have performed better as suggested by growth data and proximate analysis of lipid content. Our results suggest that alterations to the hatchery environment may improve the effectiveness of native species reintroduction efforts using hatchery-reared fish. Further research is needed to assess additional hatchery-rearing environment alterations as well as the long-term effects such alterations might have on hatchery outplanted fish.

Byartificially spawning and rearing fish in a controlled hatchery environment, it is possible toproduce large numbers of fish that have a high survival rate while in the hatchery. This methodcan result in thousands of fish available for supplementing or reestablishing fisheries. However,many of these fish do not survive when stocked into the wild. If you compare the environments in which we raise fish for stocking and the environments we expect them to survive in, there are many apparent differences. Previous research suggests that hatchery fish exposed to altered rearing environments behave more flexibly. Fish raised in plain hatchery environments have little exposure to complex environments that more closely resemble natural streams and lakes. By creating environmental complexity and variability during a fish's residence in a hatchery environment, fish may have the ability to learn and alter behavior in ways that increase post-stocking survival. Here I investigate the addition of variability in the environment of hatchery reared brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), by assessing behavioral changes and post-stocking survival in several Adirondack lakes. My findings show several changes in behavior prior to stocking, as well as a survival advantage in a controlled laboratory setting. However, it did not result in increased recapture rates when the brook trout and Atlantic salmon were stocked into Adirondack lakes and ponds.

Book excerpt: Isolation-reintroduction management (IRM) is commonly used to establish and maintain native fish populations threatened by hybridization and or competition with non-native fishes. IRM requires restriction of further invasion via fish barriers, followed by eradication of extant non-natives and reintroduction of native fish stock. IRM success, defined by establishment of self-sustaining populations, remains variable in the literature. I assessed factors potentially affecting reintroduction success of juvenile Colorado River cutthroat trout (CRCT) in a large IRM watershed experiencing historically low survival and recruitment post-stocking. I evaluated the potential for increasing post-stocking survival using progeny from a single, wild source population, through 1) exposure to differing ex situ rearing strategies pre-release and 2) initial exposure to differing habitat types during stocking. I also quantified apparent loss via permanent emigration. Using passive integrated transponder tags, I conducted a 3-year mark-recapture study to model annual survival probability relative to multiple stocking and rearing regimes. Survival probability was highest for fish minimally exposed to ex situ rearing conditions, stocked in small, headwater stream reaches. However, maximum survival probabilities remained low (≤0.138 ± 0.015) regardless of rearing treatment, stocking location or interactive effects between covariates. Additionally, I found emigration to be a non-limiting factor as only 11 individuals were recovered beyond the terminus of the reclaimed watershed. My analysis suggests variation in stocking and rearing strategy may have some effect on translocation success, however, consistently low survival probabilities may be indicative of a larger issue, requiring evaluation of adaptive potential within the source population.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to battle the negative effects of habitat degradation and over-exploitation on wild fish populations, researchers have begun to look to hatcheries as a component of ex-situ conservation. Hatcheries are utilized as breeding grounds for fish, which are ultimately released as a way to bolster and help maintain wild populations Unfortunately, released fish often display behavioral deficits and are unable to function as effectively as their wild counterparts, with large proportions of released fish lost to mortality. It is hypothesized that poor post-release survival arises because of adaptation to captivity, relaxed natural selection in the captive breeding environments, and the experience of being maintained in a safe, unchanging captive environment. This thesis project examined the potential benefits of environmental enrichment in a captive breeding environment on the behavior and swimming performance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Trout aged 11 months, were exposed to environmental enrichment by adding and exposing the fish to different kinds of novel objects, such as plastic models of aquatic weeds, PVC pipes, and floating plants that provided the fish with areas to explore, hide and interact. After two months of enrichment, the fish were tested in an Open Field Novel Object Test to assess their explorative nature, levels of anxiety and their overall swimming agility. These assays revealed that compared to fish reared in standard hatchery conditions, the trout reared in enriched conditions showed a lower level of anxiety and a higher level of activity. The enriched fish were also more explorative, but there were no clear effects on swimming performance and the fish were not significantly more agile in terms of the number of collisions the fish made within the test tank walls.

Each species and population adapts to its environment, adaptations visible in morphology, ecology, behaviour, physiology and genetics. Here, the authors present the population ecology of Atlantic salmon and brown trout and how it is influenced by the environment in terms of growth, migration, spawning and recruitment. Salmonids appeared as freshwater fish some 50 million years ago. Atlantic salmon and brown trout evolved in the Atlantic basin, Atlantic salmon in North America and Europe, brown trout in Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. The species live in small streams as well as large rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal seas and oceans, with brown trout better adapted to small streams and less well adapted to feeding in the ocean than Atlantic salmon. Smolt and adult sizes and longevity are constrained by habitat conditions of populations spawning in small streams. Feeding, wintering and spawning opportunities influence migratory versus resident lifestyles, while the growth rate influences egg size and number, age at maturity, reproductive success and longevity. Further, early experiences influence later performance. For instance, juvenile behaviour influences adult homing, competition for spawning habitat, partner finding and predator avoidance. The abundance of wild Atlantic salmon populations has declined in recent years; climate change and escaped farmed salmon are major threats. The climate influences through changes in temperature and flow, while escaped farmed salmon do so through ecological competition, interbreeding and the spreading of contagious diseases. The authors pinpoint essential problems and offer suggestions as to how they can be reduced. In this context, population enhancement, habitat restoration and management are also discussed. The text closes with a presentation of what the authors view as major scientific challenges in ecological research on these species.
