Book excerpt: Representativeness is often identified as a criterion for ecological studies and assessments of parks and reserve networks. In this report, an assessment was made of the environmental representativeness of forest plot data from a number of Forest Ecosystem Classification and Growth and Yield surveys in Ontario. The researchers examined the frequency distribution of the survey plots in terms of selected climatic, soil, and topographic gradients. In addition, they evaluated the distributions of plots against site regions and new climatic classifications (or regionalisations) that were generated for the province. Undersurveyed climatic domains were identified and recommendations are included regarding the design and location of future Forest Ecosystem Classification and Growth and Yield survey plots.

The Forest Landscape Ecology Program commissioned a survey of their concerns and information needs with respect to this process. This report summarizes the issues and concerns reported by the respondents into 28 common themes grouped into the following general areas of activity: managing for biodiversity, wildlife management and habitat supply, ecosystem inventory and management, natural heritage definition and conservation, managing for multiple use, and assessing effects of development activities. Book excerpt: This study assessed the temporal and spatial variability in forest growth & carbon storage to provide a comprehensive estimate of the carbon budget for boreal ecosystems in the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in northern Ontario. In the study, stand-level growth & carbon dynamics were simulated using TRIPLEX1.0, a new process-based forest growth & carbon dynamics model. The model was recently calibrated & tested using field measurements collected in Ontario, and was validated using 49 permanent sample plots in the Model Forest. Simulated carbon storage (net primary productivity, forest biomass, and soil carbon) are compared with field data and results from other studies on Canadian boreal forests. Estimates of carbon based on stand variables & analysis of the net carbon balance suggest whether the Model Forest ecosystem was acting as a carbon sink. The results provide information needed by local forest managers to develop ecological & carbon-based indicators and to monitor the sustainability of their forest ecosystems.

Book excerpt: This report describes the work accomplished under Phase 2 of a project to develop and apply a landscape ecological model to aid in the understanding and management of Ontario forest ecosystems. The first year concentrated on the initial development and testing of a data and simulation system to predict and understand forest productivity and water cycling for a test area in the Temagami District of Ontario. The second year's efforts further extended and developed the landscape model for three additional ecosystems along a significant east-west gradient across the province. The sites were chosen to provide both a broad geographic range in location and biome and a set of comprehensive measurements of forest productivity and hydrology for model diagnosis and validation. The three areas incorporated into the east-west gradient are the Petawawa National Forest Institute near Pembroke, the Turkey Lakes Experimental Watershed north of Sault Ste. Marie, and the area around Rinker Lake, north of Thunder Bay. Modifications and improvements were implemented in the digital terrain analysis methods, in the user interface, and in specific process modules.
