Book excerpt: Boyd and Walter (1975) identified the need to provide supervision for school counselors almost forty years ago. Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States (2014), in her address at the American School Counselor Association Conference stated that school counselors needed to be provided with professional development opportunities designed specifically for their needs. Though the need for supervision and professional training has been identified, there has been little recent research done addressing the unique professional development needs of school counselors in rural America. There is also a paucity of research that assesses the impact of state-sponsored school counseling professional development training. The first article summarizes the research on school counselors in rural America and indicates the need to provide them with professional development opportunities and/or supervision to meet the higher demands placed on them and the lower availability of resources to meet those demands. The second article examines the impact of state-sponsored professional development training on school counselors' self-efficacy, including school counselors working in rural school settings. Albert Bandura's self-efficacy theory (1986) and research indicating the impact self-efficacy has on a number of indicators of counselor well-being and then their provision of counseling services served as the theoretical base for this research. The assessment instrument utilized in the study was based on Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Outcomes indicated that state-sponsored professional development training may have similar efficacy with rural school counselors as with those from more urban and suburban settings and when provided via web-based as well as through site-based delivery. Caution should be used when interpreting these results due to the validity threats in a non-equivalent posttest design and with small sample sizes. Additional research is recommended.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a professional development unit on program evaluation on in-service elementary school counselors': (a) knowledge of program evaluation, (b) self-efficacy level towards performing program evaluation, and (c) ability to develop and conduct program evaluation in the school setting. This study provided a four-session professional development unit on program evaluation to a group of elementary school counselors in Pinellas County, Florida. There were 29 participants who completed the study. Results indicated after participating in a the professional development unit, based on Social Cognitive Theory, elementary school counselors increased their knowledge of program evaluation, increased their perceived self-efficacy toward program evaluation skills, and applied the learning from the professional development in their school settings. Although further research is necessary, the findings of this study suggest that implementation of a professional development unit, like the one tested in this study might be a useful step toward increasing the program evaluation skills of school counselors. Additionally, these results further validate the applications of Social Cognitive Theory to professional development.

To that end, the purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the training needs of site supervisors of master's program school counseling interns in the Pacific Northwest via the construct of self-efficacy. To initiate this exploration, the Site Supervisor Self-Efficacy Survey (S4) was developed. This 28 item web-based survey investigated respondents' (N = 147) perceived self-efficacy in relation to supervision as well as hours of supervision training received. Results (82% return rate) indicate that many site supervisors have little or no supervision training, and that supervisor self-efficacy appears relatively strong--consistently so for those with over 40 hours of training. Additionally, this study explored the perceived impact of professional development on the school counselor. This qualitative study collected data from 32 school counselors in six different school districts located in the state of Pennsylvania. Responses from an online survey, open-ended questions, and individual interviews were used to obtain insights from school counselors regarding their feelings towards the professional development activities experienced. Findings suggested professional development made an impact on the majority of school counselors participating in the study. Responses also revealed that school counselors felt the professional development they participated in had moderate impact on their effectiveness. School counselors expressed a desire for relevant, meaningful professional development with the opportunities to learn practical skills applicable to their daily work.

Most notably, the requirement of previous teaching experience has been removed. Since the position of counselor developed out of teaching, many studies have examined teaching experience or lack of it as variables. Yet none has examined school counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas related to the MoStep School Counseling Competencies. This research study surveyed school counselors to determine if there was a relationship between teaching experience or lack of it and counselors' perceived importance of 18 professional development areas derived from the MoStep School Counseling Competencies. The study also examined demographic variables, self-efficacy and stress, and their possible relationships to counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development for those with teaching experience and those who lack teaching experience. Findings suggest that teaching experience has no relationship to counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas. An unanticipated finding was that counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas was related to counselors' years of experience as a counselor. Since the early years of counselor experience are important to success in the profession, issues such as early-career mentoring and administrative understanding of the role of the school counselor may prove useful.
