Book excerpt: The role of the college and university president is examined, including myths, expectations, and realities of the presidency. Data are gathered from research studies, interviews with many presidents, and the author's personal experience as a college president. Among the issues discussed are presidential selection and evaluation, the relationship between the governing board and the president, problems of leadership in multicampus systems, collective bargaining, and the personal side of the presidency. Specific chapters deal with these issues as well as: the college presidency--yesterday and today; the new college president; the president and governance; assessing presidential effectiveness; and the president and educational leadership. Several requirements for effective leadership for higher education are offered such as political effectiveness, visible leadership, the ability to teach the public, and a sense of service to the human spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluations of presidential political effectiveness can become partisan, often regardless of actual performance. Getting past political ideology to judge a presidency requires a new way of objectively considering presidential performance. We can consider how past presidents have provided a blueprint by demonstrating successful and unsuccessful examples of presidential performance. Each American may consider a number of factors when considering which presidential candidate to vote for, but the simple truth is that we have no way of knowing what the top issues of the next four years will be. Regardless, as Americans we know that what we do want is a president who will handle whatever issues arise in service to the nation. That president's values, experience, and commitment to serve the nation will serve as the test of how that president will ultimately be assessed. For the benefit of the nation, we can hope that all future presidents will follow in the footsteps of the successful presidents in our nation's history. Why Are Some Presidents Better Than Others? provides a methodology to consider past presidents - and in doing so, provides a framework for future presidents as well.

Book Synopsis Assessing the President by : Richard Brody
Download or read book Assessing the President written by Richard Brody and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1991-06-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do presidents inevitably lose support the longer they are in office? Does the public invariably rally behind presidents during international crises? What are the criteria by which the public forms its judgment about whether or not the president is doing a good job? And what is the role of daily news reporting and elite opinion in shaping the public's perception of the president's performance? This book addresses these questions and many others surrounding the dynamics of fluctuating public support for the president of the United States. Drawing its case material from the modern presidency from Kennedy through Reagan, with looks backward as far as Truman, this innovative work shows how the standing of the president with the American people has come to have a political life of its own. The author first examines two seemingly distinctive periods of opinion formation: the 'honeymoon' at the beginning of a presidential term and the 'rally' of presidential support that accompanies international crises. He then analyzes two previous explanations of public support - length of term in office and the state of the economy - and concludes that these explanations are, respectively, incorrect and incomplete. The author presents a model of information processing that ties public support to indications of policy success or failure brought to the attention of the public through daily news reporting by the media. The model is tested initially for the presidencies of Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford; it is then refined and tested further for the Carter and Reagan presidencies.

Book Synopsis Effective Presidency by : Erwin C. Hargrove
Download or read book Effective Presidency written by Erwin C. Hargrove and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this classic work adds a new chapter on Barack Obama and updates coverage of the end of the George W. Bush administration. Presidential scholar Erwin C. Hargrove extends his analytical framework of presidential effectiveness to show how Obama combines eventful leadership with pragmatism to move the nation forward in an intensely polarized partisan environment. Features of the textbook: Uses an analytical framework to assess historical context, personal skills and attributes, and the ability to "make a difference" in each of ten presidencies. Four presidents are judged to be "event-making" leaders: Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, and George W. Bush. Six presidents are assessed as "eventful" leaders: JFK, Ford, Carter, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, and Obama. As much a study of leadership as an analysis of ten presidencies, this book adds to our understanding in political science, history, and public administration and management.

Book Synopsis The Presidency of Barack Obama by : Julian E. Zelizer
Download or read book The Presidency of Barack Obama written by Julian E. Zelizer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and engaging account of the Obama years from a group of leading political historians Barack Obama's election as the first African American president seemed to usher in a new era, and he took office in 2009 with great expectations. But by his second term, Republicans controlled Congress, and, after the 2016 presidential election, Obama's legacy and the health of the Democratic Party itself appeared in doubt. In The Presidency of Barack Obama, Julian Zelizer gathers leading American historians to put President Obama and his administration into political and historical context. These writers offer strikingly original assessments of the big issues that shaped the Obama years, including the conservative backlash, race, the financial crisis, health care, crime, drugs, counterterrorism, Iraq and Afghanistan, the environment, immigration, education, gay rights, and urban policy. Together, these essays suggest that Obama's central paradox is that, despite effective policymaking, he failed to receive credit for his many achievements and wasn't a party builder. Provocatively, they ask why Obama didn't unite Democrats and progressive activists to fight the conservative counter-tide as it grew stronger. Engaging and deeply informed, The Presidency of Barack Obama is a must-read for anyone who wants to better understand Obama and the uncertain aftermath of his presidency. Contributors include Sarah Coleman, Jacob Dlamini, Gary Gerstle, Risa Goluboff, Meg Jacobs, Peniel Joseph, Michael Kazin, Matthew Lassiter, Kathryn Olmsted, Eric Rauchway, Richard Schragger, Paul Starr, Timothy Stewart-Winter, Thomas Sugrue, Jeremi Suri, Julian Zelizer, and Jonathan Zimmerman.

Book Synopsis Presidential Leadership in Public Opinion by : Jeffrey E. Cohen
Download or read book Presidential Leadership in Public Opinion written by Jeffrey E. Cohen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although presidents may have a difficult time actually leading the public and Congress, voters still desire strong leadership from their commander in chief. In Presidential Leadership in Public Opinion, Jeffrey E. Cohen argues that the perception of presidential leadership in American politics is affected not so much by what presidents accomplish but by whether voters think their president is a good leader. When assessing whether a president is a good leader, voters ask two questions: does the president represent me and the nation? And, is the president strong? Cohen shows that presidential interactions with Congress affect voter perceptions of presidential representation and strength. These perceptions have important implications for public attitudes about American politics. They affect presidential approval ratings, the performance of candidates in presidential elections, attitudes toward Congress, and trust in government. Perceptions of presidential leadership qualities have implications not only for the presidency but also for the larger political system.

Chapters on total quality management, presidential spouses, and fund raising are new to this edition, as are 11 appendixes offering sample materials for conducting presidential searches.
Book Synopsis President Or King? by : Meenekshi Bose
Download or read book President Or King? written by Meenekshi Bose and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the expansion of the federal government since the 1930s and the rise of the United States as a global power in the twentieth century, the need for a powerful president to direct American priorities and policies is clear. In times of national crisis, domestic and international focus on the president becomes even greater, with the widespread expectation that executive leadership is necessary to combat the challenge. The need for checks on that power by other institutions of American government, namely Congress and the courts, also is evident, though the balancing of presidential power typically has not developed in conjunction with its expansion. This edited volume analyses the growth of presidential power from the Civil War era to the present, examining both emergency situations in wartime and developments in non-crisis periods.
