Book excerpt: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that alcohol use is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States and results in approximately 79,000 deaths annually. College students are at particular risk of alcohol-related consequences due to their heavy drinking tendencies, with multiple studies indicating over 40% of students engage in the practice of binge drinking. Although there have been some promising findings with respect to programs that serve to reduce alcohol use and limit associated harm, researchers note the pressing need for the continued examination of etiological variables that can improve prevention efforts. Two important predictors of drinking outcomes identified in both the etiological and prevention literature are protective and risk behaviors students engage in while drinking. Although associations between drinking-related protective and risk behaviors and drinking outcomes have been well studied on their own, there is a lack of research examining how both types of behaviors operate collectively. Further, these variables are often assessed globally, such that students are asked to report their typical, or average use of these behaviors. Thus, it is unclear as to what types of protective and risk behaviors are most influential of drinking outcomes, whether these associations are consistent across multiple drinking events, and whether the use of these variables is consistent from one drinking event to the next. Accordingly, there were three aims of the dissertation: (1) to examine the collective influence of individual drinking-related protective and risk behaviors on alcohol use and related consequences using a global assessment, (2) to examine the stability of drinking-related protective and risk behaviors over time, as well as relationships between these variables, alcohol use, and related consequences using an event-level assessment, and (3) to examine whether gender differences exist in the use of protective and risk behaviors over time. Several findings emerged from the current study. Results of the global analysis revealed pacing protective behaviors, and drinking to get drunk, mixing, and mass consumption risk behaviors accounted for significant, unique variance in drinking outcomes. Results of the event-level analysis revealed that use of individual protective and risk behavior constructs were stable over time, however the associations between individual protective and risk behavior constructs, alcohol use, and consequences varied. Finally, results of the test for gender differences indicated that use of protective and risk behaviors over time was equivalent between males and females, with the exception of social protective behaviors and drinking to get drunk risk behaviors. Findings reinforce the importance of including components in prevention programs that aim to increase the use protective behaviors and decrease the use of risk behaviors, and also highlight the need for additional research that examines context-specific predictors of these constructs. While research on college drinking is extensive, it is almost exclusively focused on white non-Hispanic populations, with minimal attention to ethnic minority groups--particularly the Hispanic college student. The aim of this study was threefold: 1) to investigate differences in drinking patterns between Hispanic and white non-Hispanic college students; 2) to examine gender differences in drinking behavior within the Hispanic college student population; and 3) to identify predictive factors that influence the drinking behavior of Hispanic college students while using Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory as a theoretical lens. The Core Alcohol and Drug Survey was used to collect data on college students', beliefs, attitudes, and experiences associated with alcohol use in college. The sample data used in this study was collected from 2011-2015 and was delimited to include only full-time undergraduate students identifying as Hispanic and white non-Hispanic (N=54,030). Four research questions provided the basis of the study which were operationalized by Astin's (1993) input environment outcome model (IEO). Descriptive analyses were conducted to describe the sample in terms of individual and institutional characteristics based on ethnic origin (Hispanic and white non-Hispanic), experiences on a college campus, and alcohol use. Independent sample t-tests were conducted to determine statistical significance of differences between Hispanic and white non-Hispanic students and gender differences within the Hispanic college student population. To determine the magnitude and practical significance of the effect size in the differences between these groups, effect size was calculated using Cohen D. Lastly, inferential statistics using a hierarchical, multiple regression were used to find predictive factors for alcohol use with the Hispanic college student population. Statistical significance results were reported for each model in the regression. Emerging predictive factors regarding binge drinking episodes among Hispanic college students included: gender, campus size, perceptions of alcohol use, participation in campus organizations, expectancies of alcohol as a tool to handle stress, expectancies of alcohol as a means of facilitating social bonds with men, it's perceived ability to allow people to have more fun, make food taste better, makes women & men sexier, and negative consequences of hangover, getting in trouble with police, missing classes, and getting arrested for DWI/DUI. Considerations and implications for law enforcement personnel, higher education practitioners, and future researchers are included.

This study attempted to determine whether or not significant relationships existed between the drinking behaviors of college students and selected personality factors. Instruments employed for this study included The Adjective Check List and Drinking Scale that was developed to classify the students into three drinking behavior groups: Problem Drinkers (PD), Non-problem Drinkers (NPD), and Non Drinkers (ND). Ten of the 23 factors of the ACL were utilized and included: Self-acceptance, Self-criticality, Self-control Endurance, Order, Change, Aggression, Autonomy, Liability, and Deference. Hypotheses were developed for each of the ten factors and five were found to be significant through analysis of variance. Those factors that were found significant were: Self-acceptance, Self-criticality, Self-control, Endurance, and Order. The Scheffe test was performed on the significant variables and it confirmed the author's hypotheses of predicted differences on all but one comparison. Problem Drinkers scored significantly lower than Nonproblem Drinkers and Non-drinkers on the following variables: Self-acceptance, Self-control, Endurance; and Order. Problem Drinkers scored significantly higher than Non-drinkers on the Self-criticality scale. No significant differences were found between the drinking behavior groups on the following variables: Change, Liability, Deference, Aggression, and Autonomy. The writer concluded that Problem Drinkers could be characterized as having low self-evaluation, and as being low in self-control, endurance, and order. These results were consistent with findings of other research related to alcoholics and problem drinking college students.

Though some college students make self-initiated changes to their drinking, little is known about how such adjustments occur or what characteristics render students more likely to make them. Social Learning Theory (SLT) provides a guiding framework in this study with primary aims to investigate whether (1) subjective cognitive evaluations of experienced alcohol consequences influence within-person changes in drinking behavior, (2) subjective evaluations mediate the influence of individual-level variables (past experience with and normative perceptions of alcohol consequences) on weekly drinking behavior, and (3) subjective evaluations are relatively more influential on within-person behavioral change than empirically-established (objective) severity of experienced consequences. Following a baseline assessment of individual-level variables, participants (N=96 regularly drinking college students) completed ten weekly web-based surveys on previous week alcohol use and experience of 24 alcohol-related consequences, as well as their cognitive evaluations of those consequences. Results demonstrated that greater deviations above one's typical negative evaluation rating were associated with lower levels of alcohol use and consequences the following week. Support for the full mediational chain from norms or past experience to subjective evaluations to drinking behavior was not supported in the direction expected; however, evaluations remained significant after accounting for these important between-person influences. Lastly, I observed mixed support for a stronger influence of subjective negative evaluations than objective negative evaluations when considering subsequent alcohol use and consequences. Findings of the present study provide insight into the processes by which students self-initiate change in alcohol use behaviors and have potential to inform interventions for college drinking, particularly those that target how individuals think about their behavior and its consequences.

Book excerpt: Previous research has demonstrated that students' peer groups have a powerful influence on individual alcohol use. Some specific findings include that students tend to overestimate their peers' drinking and approval of drinking behaviors, and that students will consume more to match these inflated perceptions (Borsari & Carey, 2001, 2003; Perkins & Craig, 2012). Previous research on social networks has also found that alcohol use is associated with increased popularity or status (Ennett et al., 2006; Moody et al., 2011; Reifman et al., 2006). Relatively few studies have addressed the ways in which one's closest peers can have a positive influence. Behavioral interventions that rely on positive peer influence have shown promising evidence in other arenas (Banyard et al., 2007; Hays et al., 2003). In order to better understand whether peer influence can be leveraged to reduce dangerous drinking and resultant harms, this study investigated three specific questions: (1) Can students recognize problem drinkers in their networks? (2) How do different measures of status correlate to drinking behaviors? and (3) What is the relationship between status and willingness to intervene or express disapproval for drinking behaviors? The present study employed methods of social network analysis to investigate these questions quantitatively. 200 participants from 8 fraternities and sororities completed a survey instrument that assessed individual alcohol behaviors and perceptions, and asked participants to nominate specific peers as: friends, someone who is fun to be around in a party/drinking setting, someone they look up to or admire, problem drinkers, and non-problem drinkers.Self-reported alcohol consequences was the strongest predictor variable for problem drinker nominations, suggesting that students perceive problem drinkers in their social networks with some level of accuracy. With regard to status it was found that while drinks per week and self-reported alcohol consequences showed some overall positive associations with friendship and status, both had nonlinear relationships with friendship nominations, and association actually becomes negative at higher levels. This suggests that more extreme or problematic alcohol behaviors actually have a social cost. Participants also completed a scale of items assessing their willingness to intervene helpfully with a peer whose drinking may be causing harm to self or others. Higher scores on this scale were predicted by self-reported use of harm reduction strategies (like deciding to limit drinking to a certain number of drinks) and having held a leadership position.These findings suggest that (1) students can recognize problem drinking in their peers, (2) that drinking, especially problematic drinking, is not socially rewarded unconditionally and can be negatively related to friendship and status, and (3) that students who hold leadership positions in their organizations and students who use protective behavioral strategies while drinking are more likely to helpfully intervene with friends. These findings suggest some promising ways forward for interventions that aim to engage students as part of the solution.

However, there remain unanswered questions on the precise nature of these influences for Hispanic emerging adults in the college environment (Lui & Zamboanga, 2019; Zamboanga et al., 2014). The aims of this scoping review were to examine the literature among Hispanic U.S. college student alcohol use and related consequences for: (1) cultural, peer, and family predictors; and (2) demographic variance by sex, gender, and ethnic subgroup. From the 46 articles identified in PubMed and PsychINFO databases, 80.4% analyzed traditional Hispanic (pan-ethnic) samples and 19.5% analyzed Mexican American samples. Nine additional sources of gray literature identified themes of family and cultural stress among Hispanic college students. Highly acculturated individuals appeared to be more at risk for general consumption, which was characteristic of social motives. High enculturation was associated with drinking related consequences, which could be an indication that these students are more likely to view alcohol use as a coping or conformity motive. There was not full support for familism or first-generation status as protective constructs, and instead, other related components such as communication and religiousness emerged as relevant predictors. More acculturated females tend to be more vulnerable to high stress environments, and in turn binge drinking episodes. Lowered familism, increased traditional machismo (e.g., dominance and toughness), and elevated peer norms were predictors putting males more at risk, an indication that perceptiveness to the influences of peers and family depend on gender. No articles were able to specify variance in predictors by sex, and only articles of Mexican American subgroup were identified, which presents a clear gap for future research to fill.

Book excerpt: College student drinking to excess is a widespread national problem with serious consequences and it has been for a long time. Although the factors that have made the problem so intractable are complex, today based on scientific research results we have the potential to make real progress in controlling excessive drinking. In fact, a substantial body of research studies now offers direction on how to reduce excessive, underage, and high-risk college drinking. On the basis of this information, colleges and universities, communities, and other interested organizations can take steps toward positive change more confidently. Although significant information gaps remain, the science-based guidance now available means campuses and communities no longer have to “reinvent the wheel” when they try to address the problem. It also enables us to avoid inadvertently perpetuating ineffective programs and approaches.The availability of science-based guidance is a significant step forward because lack of information about what works and what does not has been a major obstacle to progress. On the research side, high-quality research has addressed only some of the issues of concern to college administrators and the practical implications of research results have not been widely disseminated. On the institutional side, most campus alcohol efforts have not been evaluated, which has hindered the effectiveness of individual campus efforts and slowed the growth of the knowledge base from which all could learn.Although the research base on college alcohol problems is limited, the panel of college presidents, students, and alcohol research specialists that contributed to this report identified a number of effective strategies that colleges and universities could confidently use today. These include strategies for changing the environment to discourage high-risk drinking, affecting the behavior of individuals and groups, creating comprehensive college-community efforts to combat the problem, and adopting effective approaches for managing program implementation. It is encouraging that many of these strategies require no new resources, are modest in costs, and can be accomplished by existing staff.From its review of the scientific literature, the Panel on Prevention and Treatment believes that adopting approaches with demonstrated effectiveness can begin to reduce high-risk college drinking and continue to advance knowledge by filling critical research gaps. The Panel recommends that the action steps and research needs described below receive priority attention from colleges and universities, researchers, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and other potential funders, communities, and interested organizations.The Panel recommended more action steps in some areas than in others. This is primarily due to the amount of research available. Except as noted, approaches that have not been included in the recommendations are not necessarily ineffective. Often simply less is known about them. Among the “key research gaps” identified by the Panel is the need for rigorous testing of strategies now considered “promising” based on face value or common sense. As researchers rise to this challenge, the effectiveness of many of these approaches will become known.
