Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Assam District Gazetteers, Vol. 10: The Khasi and Jaintia Hills, the Garo Hills and the Lushai Hills The tenth volume of the Assam District Gazetteer series contains the account of the Khasi and J aintia, the Garo and the Lushai Hills. These accounts are neces sarily brief, for little has been said of the interesting tribes by whom these districts are inhabited, as elaborate monographs on these tribes are now under preparation by oficers who are intimately acquainted with their habits. The districts are sparsely peopled, apart from Shillong there are no towns, the system of administration is simple, and there is little of industry or commerce. There is thus but little for a Gazetteer to add to the tribal monograph. I am indebted to the various District Oflicers for their kindness in examining the proofs, and to Major Shakespear for his courtesy in criticising the account of the Lushai Hills, a district with which he was for so many years so intimately connected. It should be added that these Gazetteers were written before the partition of Bengal, and that wherever the word Province occurs it is to the old Province of Assam that reference is made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the creation of imperial identities in Britain and several of its colonies - South Africa, India, Australia, Wales - and the ways in which the Victorian press around the world shaped and reflected these identities. The concept of co-histories, borrowed from Edward Said and Frantz Fanon, helps explain how the press shaped the imperial and national identities of Britain and of the colonies into co-histories that were thoroughly intertwined and symbiotic. Exploring a variety of press media, this book argues that the press was a site of resistance and revision by colonized authors and publishers, as well as a force of colonial authority for the British government. editors, and publishers, who projected a view of the empire to their British, colonial, and colonized readers. Topics include The Journal of Indian Art and Industry produced by the British art schools in India, women's periodicals, Indian writers in the British press, The Imperial Gazetteer published in Scotland, the rise of telegraphic news agencies, the British press's images of China seen through exhibitions of its art, the Tory periodical Blackwood's Magazine, and the Imperial Press Conference of 1909. Book excerpt: Given the uncertainties in future food and nutrition security due to climate change compounded with an increasing global population, sustainable development is essential for the survival of much of the world's population. Besides the conceptual evolution of food and nutrition security, exploration of new scientific areas aids in reshaping our knowledge of nutritional requirements, and innovation of novel technologies can be utilized to tackle production and security issues in sustainable ways. Emerging Solutions in Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the current problems and issues, emerging ideas, and pragmatic solutions in sustainable nutrition. The book is designed to promote an understanding of the fundamentals and changing landscapes of food systems, nutrition, and environmental sustainability. Emerging issues such as the growing importance of traditional foods in improving nutrition security, the exploration of biodiversity to promote food diversity, the sustainable management of current agroecosystems, the progress made in utilizing biotechnology to enhance crop production, the utilization of bio-fortification and food fortification as means of nutritional management, the latest research advancements in mineral research, and the functional foods are comprehensively addressed. For researchers seeking a deeper insight into sustainable nutrition security and the current technical developments, these chapters cover current technologies across the four pillars of food security, food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food stability, and provide a platform for critical scientific thinking in the field of food security, safety, and environmental sustainability in conjunction with Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger and Climate Action.
