The author is a vegetarian, non-smoker and teetotaler - but should one not have at least one vice? Brutally honest and in a comprehensive way, he reveals his experience with his addiction to finding increasingly better teas for the daily dose and the constantly growing collection. But that is not all, he also freely discloses how he treats the most tender leaves and buds with boiling water, some of which is even bubbling. In addition to providing personal experiences, the book also serves as a thorough guide and reference book, covering tea varieties and cultivars as well as the topics of purchasing, storing, choosing the right water, the various ways of brewing and the fitting accessories. Furthermore, more than 200 different teas are presented, both world-renowned standards as well as some personal favorites and curiosities. THIS EDITION CONTAINS EXACTLY THE SAME TEXT AS THE REGULAR EBOOK OR PAPERBACK, BUT MOST OF THE PHOTOS HAVE BEEN REMOVED. IN OTHER WORDS, THIS VERSION IS TEXT-ONLY WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PICK THE REGULAR VERSION IF YOU PREFER TO HAVE YOUR READING EXPERIENCE ENHANCED BY A WIDE VARIETY OF PHOTOS.

Book excerpt: Whether it's a delicate green tea or a bracing Assam black, a cup of tea is a complex brew of art and industry, tradition and revolution, East and West. In this sweeping tour through the world of tea, veteran tea traders Mary Lou Heiss and Robert J. Heiss chronicle tea's influence across the globe and provide a complete reference for choosing, drinking, and enjoying this beverage. The Story of Tea begins with a journey along the tea trail, from the lush forests of China, where tea cultivation first flourished, to the Buddhist temples of Japan, to the vast tea gardens of India, and beyond. Offering an insider's view of all aspects of tea trade, the Heisses examine Camellia sinensis, the tea bush, and show how subtle differences in territory and production contribute to the diversity of color, flavor, and quality in brewed tea. They profile more than thirty essential tea varietals, provide an in depth guide to tasting and brewing, and survey the customs and crafts associated with tea. Sharing the latest research, they discuss tea's health benefits and developments in organic production and fair trade practices. Finally, they present ten sweet and savory recipes, including Savory Chinese Marbled Eggs and Green Tea Pot de Crâme, and resources for purchasing fine tea. Vividly illustrated throughout, The Story of Tea is an engrossing tribute to the illustrious, invigorating, and elusive leaf that has sustained and inspired people for more than two thousand years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Indian economy integrates into global circuits of production, exchange and accumulation, the burdens of adjustment are shared unequally by different sectors, classes and regions. This study unravels the livelihood strategies and living conditions of labour in the tea gardens of Assam. The tea sector has been undergoing a crisis since the 1990s, with stagnant production, decline in exports, and closures of many tea gardens leading to large-scale retrenchments in the labour force. Based on a detailed analysis of secondary data and primary field research, the study examines the extent, types and implications of inter-generational occupational mobility (or immobility) among tea garden labourers in Assam. In the process, it reflects on how even a sector that had brought capital and labour from outside and contributed significantly to the country’s export earnings failed to create dynamic growth linkages within the local economy. The experience of the labour force in the Assam tea sector, the authors argue, is important for making sense not only of the development dynamics of the region, but of the contradictory ways in which forces of globalisation and neo-liberal reforms have been reshaping the worlds of labourers in the margins. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of labour studies, development studies, management studies, and studies of north-east India, as well as to policy-makers and those in the tea industry.

Book excerpt: The story of The Making of India begins in the seventeenth century, when a small seafaring island, one tenth the size of the Indian subcontinent, despatched sailing ships over 11,000 miles on a five-month trading journey in search of new opportunities. In the end they helped build a new nation. The sheer audacity and scale of such an endeavour, the courage and enterprise, have no parallel in world history. This book is the first to assess in a single volume almost all aspects of Britain's remarkable contribution in providing India with its lasting institutional and physical infrastructure, which continues to underpin the world's largest democracy in the twenty-first century.
