Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of the Social Problem It should be definitely recognised as the extreme of folly to despise the material conditions of life. The prin ciple here suggested is not, as often misrepresented, that some undefined miracle of moral agency is loftier and better than any intelligible causation. The point is simply that all conditions practically mean human action, and all human action issues from the wfiole disposition Of human minds. Therefore the disposition of the mind as a whole is the determining condition Of all conditions, and though men may suffer through the character of others, they can gain and retain no permanent advantage excepting through their own. N ow characters or dispositions react altogether differently to conditions which are quantitatively and materially the same, according to the means by which they come, and their consequent relation to the feelings and expectations of the persons concerned. Help from a dutiful son may put heart into a man to struggle through his distress the same money, thrown to him by a stranger, may crush him to the earth. And thus a well-meaning attempt to effect an improvement may quickly quadruple the evil, and such a result is observed with terrible fre quenoy whereas, when approached in a different way, the evil may vanish before a sure and persistent growth of good. The difference between two such attempts will be found to depend mainly on the different relation of the methods adopted to the character both Of those to be benefited and of any who have been accomplices in the mischief which it is desired to arrest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem in Its Economical, Moral, and Political Aspects A quarrel old as the world again threatens to break out - a long-standing controversy, that has been debated with sword and pen, by men of genius and embattled armies with ever-varying fortune, but with no finality, has once more reached a critical stage - the old quarrel between Plato's 'two nations, ' the Rich and the Poor; between those who, whether by luck or law or art or merit possess the earth, and those who find themselves with nothing for their portion, including the new issue between the few who have drawn to. themselves much, and the many who have got little in the division of the great mass of material wealth, produced by the modern worker under the modern director of work. Yes, indeed; it is just this old sore that has again reached the inflammatory state that threatens danger to the entire body. But why? is the surprised inquiry of many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology and Modern Social Problems This book was originally written as an elementary text in sociology for use in high schools, colleges, and reading circles where it is desired to combine the study of sociology with a study of current social problems on the one hand, and to correlate it with a course in economics on the other. The generous reception and wide use which the book has enjoyed since its publication seem to indicate that there is a demand for a simple, concrete text in sociology in which methodological discussions are reduced to a minimum and the facts are drawn as far as possible from contemporary social life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in American Society: Some Social Studies Let the light Shine into every nook and comer, and let every piece be tested; for, if there is anything out of order, it is high time that it be mended, and, if there is anything which has become obsolete, it is high time that it be cast aside for something better. Criticism will lead in creativeness, and after wild vagaries will come the saner mood. Vast improvements in the form and content of human life will result from this free and intense application of thought to all these questions of poverty, crime, education, economics, and religious co-operation. It is only by such discussion that we can hope to reach modes of life, individual and corporate, on a level with our intelligence. And one of the most hopeful indications of the hour is this growing interest in all matters which pertain to the problem of living. The social impulse which seeks to put a truth to divine uses is as necessary as the scientific spirit which seeks to discover that truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Problems: A Study of Present-Day Social Conditions The aim in this work is not to make original contributions to the subjects discussed, but rather to collect the available material on these subjects and arrange it in such form that it may be used advantageously as a basis for study in the classroom. The work is intended primarily for beginners in the field of social studies - for those who may desire a better understanding of present-day social questions. It deals largely with facts and with an analysis of conditions. Pure theory is kept in the background as much as possible in the thought that the more abstruse theoretical questions should be left for more advanced courses. The effort has been made to present the matter in as clear and in as impartial a manner as is possible; also care has been taken to give the authority for practically every important statement of fact made. Through the use of the supplementary questions and the references at the end of each chapter, ample material may be found for a college or normal school course on this subject. It is also hoped that the references given and topics suggested will be of assistance to reading circles and study clubs that may wish to pursue such a course of study as is here presented. Although the book deals mainly with the evils, or at least the weaknesses, in our social system, yet it is hoped that a spirit of optimism pervades the work - an optimism based on the knowledge of past achievements in social progress and inspiring us to greater efforts in the future. The trend of education to-day is toward a better understanding of our own times. The past century was characterized by great advance in the physical sciences - in the control of physical forces. The indications arc that the present century may be characterized by great advance in the social sciences - in the control of social forces. Already great movements are under way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem: Life and Work Tms volume is designed to be an informal introduction to the science and art of social progress. It does not profess to furnish any sufficient outline of sociology or politics, but seeks to ask and answer certain preliminary questions which confront thinking men and women who are interested in work of social reform, and wish to reach satisfactory intelligible principles for their guidance in such work. Its primary object is to enforce the recognition of the organic unity of the problem of social progress by showing the interactions of the many concrete questions and movements which divide the attention of social reformers. We know from history that as far back as Aristotle's time learned men of influence tried to solve the riddle, but failed. The economic evil is one of the problems of political economy. Since political economy is the science that treats of our own doings and there is nothing supernatural in it, the riddle is certainly solvable. I venture to say that any one who will read this pamphlet with an honest desire to learn the facts in the case will become convinced that the solution is now an accomplished fact. There are men who would put under ban any knowledge that might affect the present social order. But there are, and for centuries have been, others who have sought the cause of the evil for the sole purpose of removing it, regardless of consequences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Problems of Social Psychology This book is designed for the teacher and the student who are primarily interested in the science of psychology as a systematic, interpretive account of human behavior and who are interested in applying the science of psy chology to current social issues. In attempting to meet these requirements the authors have not found it necessary to keep two sets of readers in mind or to treat the subject matter of this book from two points of view. The basic guiding principle has been that a theoretically sound social psychology is also a practically valid and immediately useful social psychology. Neither the pure scientist nor the man of action can neglect public opinion survey data or experiments on perceptual organization without running the risk of making his theory truncated and narrow or his program of action superficial and ineffective. Is now recognized, too, as a question of the quality, as well as the quantity, of population. The eugenics idea, whether or not it prove capable of development into a new science, the foundation for a new population policy, the con scious improvement of the human stock, - has Opened our eyes to some very present evils and dangers. It is unfortunate that our knowledge of the laws of heredity, which is the basis of eugenics, is so uncertain and fragmentary, and that the progress of investigation must necessarily be slow. Otherwise we might look for a rapid and at the same time sure progress of both theoretical and practical eugenics. Even with the advance of genetic psychology and experimental genetics much doubt must continue to exist with regard to the relative in uence of environ ment and heredity. The laymen may well await the verdict of time, also, as to the validity of the methods of investigation used by the biometricians of the Pearson school in England, and of Mendelism, upon which as a working hypothesis the investiga tions of the Eugenics Record Office,1 and most other American work, are being carried out. Meanwhile it is desirable to know what the problems of eugenics are, and what the difficulties in the way.
