Book excerpt: Battles of the New Republic: A Contemporary History of Nepal is a story of Nepal's transformation from war to peace, monarchy to republic, a Hindu kingdom to a secular state, and a unitary to a potentially federal state. Part-reportage, part-history, part-analysis, part-memoir, and part-biography of the key characters, the book breaks new ground in political writing from the region. With access to the most powerful leaders in the country as well as diplomats, it gives an unprecedented glimpse into Kathmandu's high politics. But this is coupled with ground-level reportage on the lives of ordinary citizens of the hills and the plains, striving for a democratic, just and equitable society. It tracks the hard grind of political negotiations at the heart of the instability in Nepal. It traces the rise of a popular rebellion, its integration into the mainstream, and its steady decline. It investigates Nepal's status as a partly-sovereign country, and reveals India's overwhelming role. It examines the angst of having to prove one's loyalties to one's own country, and exposes the Hindu hill upper-caste dominated power structures. Battles of the New Republic is a story of the deepening of democracy, of the death of a dream, and of that fundamental political dilemma - who exercises power, to what end, and for whose benefit.

Book excerpt: In Modern Nepal (Volume I) he has covered that era when Nepal as a state emerged in its present form around the late eighteenth century, when the small hill kingdom of Gorkha, some eighty miles west of Kathmandu, brought much of the Himalayan foothills and an adjoining stip of the North Indian plain under its control. Various small states were then merged into a nation and a different ruling dynasty took over power. The Shah dynasty began to rule and Malla dynasty rule came to an end. In describing this exciting period in Nepal s history, the author has written an account not to be missed by students and scholars of history. Modern Nepal (Volume II) describes how Gurkha armies for the first time seized territories far beyond the present-day Nepal; Nepal s entry into treaty relations with Great Britain; and how Gurkha expansion into North India led to a border war. The author has also effectively captured the struggle for power among the Nepalese nobility which culminated in the rise to political dominance of the Rana family. A true account of what went on before Nepal became a nation from an authoritative historian; this is a book which cannot be missed.

Book excerpt: The Present Book Deals With Two Important Aspects Of The History Of Nepal: One The Expansion Of Gorkha Which Unwittingly Ultimately Led To The Formation Of Modern Nepal; And The Other The Tracing Of The Long History Of The Conspiratory Politics Of The Court Of Nepal. Both The Events Were Of Much Importance In The History As They Were Most Important Epoch-Making Events. During The 18Th Century, Nepal Was Just A Geographical Expression Not A Political Entity. Such A Small Country Also Was Divided Into Fifty Four Petty Principalities Some Of Which Were Too Meager To Be Called A State And Had A Few Thatched Huts. The Joint Family System Had Its Impact On The Polity As Its Result Many Times The Kingdom Was Divided Among The Issues Of A King As The Ancestral Property. Moreover, The Lack Of Unity Among The Descendants Of The Same Family Also Led To The Disintegration Of The Big Kingdom Like Those Of Senas And Mallas. Thus, When Nepal Was Shattered Into Pieces, There Emerged A Small And Youngest Principality Which Shouldered The Burden Of Uniting The Divided Political Units Into One Bigger State. That Burden Was Borne By Gorkha.Gorkha, Although The Youngest Among The States In The Western Nepal, Was Made Strong, Well Determined And Daring By Its History. The Centuries Old Struggle For Its Existence Against Lamjung Had Made The Nation Militant, Cemented The Relation Between The Ruler And Ruled, And Determined To Do Something. In This Context Rulers Like Rama Shah, Prithvipati Shah And Others Had Contributed A Lot In The Growth Of The State. Rama Shah Became Shah In The Of Expansion Of Gorkha Empire. The Poverty Stricken And Outcastes Were Looked Down Upon By Next Door Neighbours And Humiliated Gorkha Sought A New Say For Its Growth And Development. Gorkha Made The Glorious History Under The Competent Ruler Like Prithvinarayan Shah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its systematic coverage of different groups, this book demonstrates how similar trends of ethnic formation are affecting all parts of Nepal. Yet, within the boundaries of a single culturally diverse state, very different forms of ethnicity have emerged. " This is a truly thematic collection with a well-defined focus on the important contemporary topics of ethnic identity and nationalism. The importance of the theme is self-evident in a world attempting to come to grips with such problems in virtually all modern states. Anyone with an interest in contemporary Nepal should study this volume." Nepal is the only officially Hindu kingdom in the world and remains so in spite of a revolution, or people's movement, in 1990 which overthrew the partyless Panchayat regime and instituted a multiparty constitutional monarchy. Since November 1994, it has also had an elected Communist government, the first of its kind in South Asia. This volume takes a long-term view of the various processes of ethnic and national development that have been displayed, both before and after 1990. It brings together twelve carefully chosen ethnographic and historical chapters covering all of the major ethnic groups and regions of Nepal.
