Book excerpt: The Chatham Island oystercatcher (Haematopus chathamensis; torea) is an endangered species ranked by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as "Nationally Critical," making it a very high priority for conservation management. The goal of the species' recovery plan is to improve productivity and adult survivorship, and to increase the total population to ) 250 individuals, thus reducing its chance of extinction and its threat ranking. This report outlines the management techniques used in 1998-2004 to boost oystercatcher productivity. From 1998 to 2004, 16 km of shoreline in northern Chatham Island (Wharekauri and Maunganui) was managed using a combination of three general techniques: predator control, stock exclusion, and movement or raising of nests away from high tide. This three-pronged attack was considered the "best practice" set of actions that would boost oystercatcher productivity and was a major success. Whereas productivity is usually low on average (0.35 chicks per pair), intensive management resulted in much higher breeding success (1.04 chicks per pair; range = 0.5-1.6). Birds that were reared in managed areas bred at 2-5 years of age, subdivided previously large territories and spread along previously unoccupied shoreline, particularly in northern Chatham Island. Survival of adults (98%) and juveniles (89%) was also higher in the managed zones. In 7 years, the total population increased from 144 to 316 birds, and the number of breeding pairs increased from 49 to 89 as a result of young birds recruiting into the population. The techniques outlined in this report should be of use to future managers of this endangered population of birds.

Book excerpt: "The Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) is a large shorebird species that feeds exclusively in the intertidal zone and inhabits the Pacific coast from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to Baja, Mexico. They have a small population size estimated at 11,000. Following a seismic uplift, Black Oystercatchers colonized Middleton Island, in the Gulf of Alaska, increasing from a single pair in 1976 to over 700 in 2002. Using molecular sexing to analyze field observations, I developed a novel field-sexing technique for this seemingly sexually monomorphic species. Using the neutral genetic markers, micro satellites, I determined that Black Oystercatchers on Middleton Island are genetically distinct from other populations in Alaska and Canada that were not significantly differentiated from one another. Using estimates of breeding parameters from this study and past studies, I determined that a small number of birds could have founded this population, resulting in a founder effect that likely caused the observed genetic differentiation. Annual island-wide counts indicate the island has stabilized, perhaps at carrying capacity, at about 700 birds, with about 500 of them breeding. Since this population comprises about 7% of the species during the breeding season, I recommend that this site be managed as a distinct population and recognized as a site of regional importance in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN)"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: About 50 species of shorebirds breed in the Arctic, where they constitute the most characteristic component of the tundra avifauna. Here, we review the impact of weather and climate on the breeding cycle of shorebirds based on extensive studies conducted across the Arctic. Conditions for breeding shorebirds are highly variable among species, sites and regions, both within and between continents. Weather effects on breeding are most moderate in the Low Arctic of northern Europe and most extreme in the Siberian High Arctic. The decision of whether or not to breed upon arrival on the breeding grounds, the timing of egg-laying and the chick-growth period are most affected by annual variation in weather. In large parts of the Arctic, clutch initiation dates are highly correlated with snowmelt dates and in regions and years where extensive snowmelt occurs before or soon after the arrival of shorebirds, the decision to breed and on the breeding ecology of clutch initiation dates appear to be a function of food availability for laying females. Once incubation is initiated, adult shorebirds appear fairly resilient to variations in temperature with nest abandonment primarily occurring in case of severe weather with new snow covering the ground. Feeding conditions for chicks, a factor highly influenced by weather, affects juvenile production in most regions. Predation has a very strong impact on breeding productivity throughout the Arctic and subarctic, with lemming Dicrostonyx spp. and Lemmus spp. fluctuations strongly influencing predation rates, particularly in the Siberian Arctic. The fate of Arctic shorebirds under projected future climate scenarios is uncertain, but High Arctic species and populations appear particularly at risk. Climatic amelioration may benefit Arctic shorebirds in the short term by increasing both survival and productivity, whereas in the long term habitat changes both on the breeding grounds and on the temperate and tropical non-breeding areas may put them under considerable pressure and may bring some of them near to extinction. Their relatively low genetic diversity, which is thought to be a consequence of survival through past climatically-driven population bottlenecks, may also put them more at risk to anthropogenic-induced climate variation than other avian taxa.
