Book Synopsis Cretaceous Climate Events and Short-Term Sea-Level Changes by : M. Wagreich
Download or read book Cretaceous Climate Events and Short-Term Sea-Level Changes written by M. Wagreich and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-level constitutes a critical planetary boundary for geological processes and human life. Sea-level fluctuations during major greenhouse phases are still enigmatic and strongly discussed in terms of changing climate systems. The geological record of the Cretaceous greenhouse period provides a deep-time view on greenhouse-phase Earthsystem processes that facilitates a much better understanding of the causes and consequences of global, geologically short-term, sea-level changes. In particualr, Cretaceous hothouse periods can serve as a laboratory to better understand a near-future greenhouse Earth. This volume presents high-resolution sea-level records from globally distributed sedimentary archives of the Cretaceous involving a large group of scientists from the International Geoscience Programme IGCP 609. Marine to non-marine sedimentary successions were analysed for revised age constraints, the correlation of global palaeoclimate shifts and sea-level changes, tested for climate-driven cyclicities, and correlated within a high-resolution stratigraphic framework of the Geological Timescale. For hothouse periods, the hypothesis of significant global groundwater-related sea-level change, i.e. aquifer-eustasy as a major process, is reviewed and substantiated.

The authors highlight several geological findings and explain the paleoenvironmental changes in Argentina and Colombia.
Book Synopsis Fossil Behavior Compendium by : Arthur J. Boucot
Download or read book Fossil Behavior Compendium written by Arthur J. Boucot and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this complete and thorough update of Arthur Boucot’s seminal work, Evolutionary Paleobiology of Behavior and Coevolution, Boucot is joined by George Poinar, who provides additional expertise and knowledge on protozoans and bacteria as applied to disease. Together, they make the Fossil Behavior Compendium wider in scope, covering all relevant animal and plant groups and all epochs, and providing a detailed review of animal and plant fossil behavior in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Fossil behavior encompasses not only past evidence of the life history of an organism but also behavioral, predation, and symbiotic interactions, including parasitism. This book compares patterns of behavior and coevolution in the past with those of the present-day descendants. It also discusses how to evaluate the rates of evolution of behavior and coevolution at various taxonomic levels. The compendium emphasizes the interactions between fossils and compares these interactions with present-day counterparts. It also provides new discussions on topics related to fossils in amber. Keeping Boucot’s trademark, easy-to-read style, the book includes new findings never published previously, reports not easily accessed, numerous examples, 40 tables, 285 illustrations—some published here for the first time—and a four-page color insert. The book provides a concise account of the evidence for varied disease types recognized to date in the fossil record.
Download or read book Taphonomy written by Peter A. Allison and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taphonomic bias is a pervasive feature of the fossil record. A pressing concern, however, is the extent to which taphonomic processes have varied through the ages. It is one thing to work with a biased data set and quite another to work with a bias that has changed with time. This book includes work from both new and established researchers who are using laboratory, field and data-base techniques to characterise and quantify the temporal and spatial variation in taphonomic bias. It may not provide all the answers but it will at least shed light on the right questions.
Book Synopsis Applied Palaeontology by : Robert Wynn Jones
Download or read book Applied Palaeontology written by Robert Wynn Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palaeontology has developed from a descriptive science to an analytical science used to interpret relationships between earth and life history. This book highlights its key role in the study of the evolving earth, life history and environmental processes. After an introduction to fossils and their classification, each of the principal fossil groups are studied in detail, covering their biology, morphology, classification, palaeobiology and biostratigraphy. The latter sections focus on the applications of fossils in the interpretation of earth and life processes and environments.

Book Synopsis New Aspects on Tethyan Cretaceous Fossil Assemblages by : H.A. Kollmann
Download or read book New Aspects on Tethyan Cretaceous Fossil Assemblages written by H.A. Kollmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geologic term "Tethys" introduced by Eduard Suess (1893) into science was originally a paleogeographic one. Since its original description it has been used in various ways. One of them is Tethys as a paleo-biogeographic concept. This concept was adopted for IGCP Project 262, Tethyan Cretaceous Correlation. It was proposed by G. Czaszar and Heinz A. Kollmann and has been approved by the IGCP Board in February 1987. The project has its aims primarily in the improvement of the stratigraphic correlation between the heterogenous facies of the Tethyan realm. The requests to paleontology in this programme are of various kinds: The delimitation of the Tethyan realm in space and time needs clear statements on the composition of Tethyan faunal or floral assemblages. Biozones based on various fossil groups have to be established for biostratigraphic correlation. Finally, Tethyan bioprovinces have to be established. These problems have been discussed in a special meeting of the paleontological group of the project which was held on January 25-27, 1988, in Vienna. Papers presented at this meeting are published in this volume.
