Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-war generation of chemists learned to handle a blow pipe at the university as thoroughly as modern chemistry students learn to write computer programmes. Even after World War II the rule of three was considered to be sufficient mathematical knowledge for chemists and the short course of "higher mathematics" at technical universities was the test most feared by chemistry students. However, even then some en visaged the theoretical derivation of information on the properties of molecules from knowledge of the bonding of the component atoms. During the last quarter of this century, amazing changes have occurred in chemistry, some of them almost incredible. Dirac's famous clairvoyant statement* has been partially realized. Incorporation of quantum mechanics into chemistry encountered numerous difficulties. After all, the reserve of experimental chemists is not surprising. For decades the hydrogen and helium atoms and the hydrogen molecule belonged among the systems most frequently investigated by theoreti cians. Later these systems were supplemented by ethylene and benzene. The authors of this book can therefore recall with understanding the words of the late Professor Lukes: "Well, when they succeed in computing a molecule of some alkaloid by those methods of yours ... ". Unfortunately, the calculations on calycanin were not completed before his death. Now there is no need to convince even the members of the older generation of the usefulness of quantum chemistry for chemists. Even the most conservative were convinced after the introduction of the W ood ward-Hoffmann rules.

Book Synopsis Quantum Theory of the Chemical Bond by : R. Daudel
Download or read book Quantum Theory of the Chemical Bond written by R. Daudel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present text is a rational analysis of the concept of the chemical bond by means of the principles of wave mechanics. The discussion of the material has been arranged so as to render its main content comprehensible for readers who may not have had pre"ious training in quantum mechanics. The text comprises three major parts. It begins with an exposition of the fundamental ideas. In this section the principles are reviewed from which de Broglie developed his mechanics; this allows the book to be read by chemistry majors and freshmen alike. However, we believe that it may also be of interest to university-and college teachers who must include certain aspects of quantum chemistry into their courses while being insufficiently familiar with the subject. It may even be of interest to science teachers in secondary schools. Finally, having been a witness to the evolution of these notions for over a quarter of a century, we present certain concepts from a particular point of view which might prove attractive to chemists of all kinds, perhaps even quantum chemists. The second, more technical part summarizes the methods of constructing wave functions that describe the electrons in molecules. This section can only be fully appreciated by those readers who are familiar with some aspects of the algorithms used in quantum mechanics.

Book excerpt: On the day after the 1959 Cambridge Congress, during which the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics was founded, a biophysics section was formed within the Society of Physical Chemistry (Societe de Chimie Physique). Since then, three of the Society's annual meetings (the 11th, 17th, and 23rd) were devoted exclusively to the physico-chemical study of biological systems. The first of these was held in June 1961 at a hotel in Col de Voza, at the foot of an alpine glacier above Chamonix. The second, in May 1967, took place in the more learned setting of the venerable rooms of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The third - the one dealt with in the present volume - was recently held at Orleans-La Source in the newly built lecture theatres of the young University, which is near the great Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on the Sologne plateau. These three stages are milestones of an evolution which characterises (at least schematically) the explosive evolution of biological physico-chemistry. The first colloquium, with the title 'Deoxyribonucleic Acid: Structure, Synthesis and Functions', actually marks the first contact of the physical chemist with one of the then most prestigious biological macromolecules, the structure of which had just been discovered, and in this way celebrated one of the first and most striking successes of molecular biology.

Book Synopsis The Organic Chemist's Book of Orbitals by : William Jorgensen
Download or read book The Organic Chemist's Book of Orbitals written by William Jorgensen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Organic Chemist's Book of Orbitals focuses on the mechanisms, stereochemistry, and reactivity of molecular orbitals. Composed of four chapters, the book outlines how molecular orbitals are created by delocalization. Concerns include CC and CH single-bond orbitals; bond orbitals and group orbitals; and the localized orbitals of CH2 and CH3 groups. Schematic diagrams are presented to show the nature, reactions, and compositions of molecular orbitals. The text offers a list of molecules and orbital occupancies. Orbital drawings are presented to show the differences of the molecular orbitals of hydrogen, water, ammonia, methane, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and acetylene. The book also provides an index of references for the molecular geometries and orbital energies employed in the orbital drawings. Considering the weight of data presented, the book is a great find for readers interested in studying molecular orbitals.

Book Synopsis Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry by : Eric Scerri
Download or read book Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry written by Eric Scerri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophy of chemistry has emerged in recent years as a new and autonomous field within the Anglo-American philosophical tradition. With the development of this new discipline, Eric Scerri and Grant Fisher's "Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry" is a timely and definitive guide to all current thought in this field. This edited volume will serve to map out the distinctive features of the field and its connections to the philosophies of the natural sciences and general philosophy of science more broadly. It will be a reference for students and professional alike. Both the philosophy of chemistry and philosophies of scientific practice alike reflect the splitting of analytical and continental scholastic traditions, and some philosophers are turning for inspiration from the familiar resources of analytical philosophy to influences from the continental tradition and pragmatism. While philosophy of chemistry is practiced very much within the familiar analytical tradition, it is also capable of trail-blazing new philosophical approaches. In such a way, the seemingly disparate disciplines such as the "hard sciences" and philosophy become much more linked.

Book Synopsis The New World of Quantum Chemistry by : A. Pullman
Download or read book The New World of Quantum Chemistry written by A. Pullman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard PULLMAN During a long period organic chemistry was one of the pre ferred field of exploration for many quantum chemists. It still remains of major interest for a number of them, but altogether it seems as if the center of gravity of the quantum molecular theories became displaced towards different horizons. The dis placement seems in fact to occur in two directions. On the one hand, we see a prominent development of very refined computations for relatively small and frequently inorganic molecular systems with the view of a better and better reproduction of their obser vable properties and thus a better understanding of the fundamen tal principles governing the electronic structure of molecules. On the other hand, there is a no less prominent development of frequently also no less refined computations towards the study of molecular systems which because of their dimensions or the com plexity of the questions which they raise go beyond the usual treatment of organic molecules. These later studies involve in particular the penetration of quantum-mechanical concepts and me thods into the realm of biochemistry, biophysics, and pharma~olo gy. It so happens that because of the nature of the problems in volved this penetration has taken up a double aspect.
