Book Synopsis How to Live Forever by : Stephen R L Clark
Download or read book How to Live Forever written by Stephen R L Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immortality is a subject which has long been explored and imagined by science fiction writers. In his intriguing new study, Stephen R.L.Clark argues that the genre of science fiction writing allows investigation of philosophical questions about immortality without the constraints of academic philosophy. He reveals how fantasy accounts of issues such as resurrection, disembodied survival, reincarnation and devices or drugs for preserving life can be used as an important resource for philosophical inquiry and examines how a society of immortals might function through a reading of the vampire myth. How to Live Forever is a compelling study which introduces students and professional philosophers to the possibilities of using science fiction in their work. It includes extensive suggestions for further reading, both fictional and philosophical, and examines the work of such major science fiction authors as Arthur C. Clarke, Frank Herbert, Larry Niven, William Gibson, and Colin Wilson.

Book excerpt: I found this book to be riveting and very informative. It brings out the essence of solid theological connotation. The book deals with Biblical substance and truth, and it leaves fictional metaphors out of the equation. It is a product of diligent research and a higher level of scriptural perception. It is a composition composed of validity and merit and I highly recommend it to everyone with a genuine interest in learning sound Biblical ideology. -Rev. Dr. Willie C. Book Synopsis Spring Came on Forever by : Bess Streeter Aldrich
Download or read book Spring Came on Forever written by Bess Streeter Aldrich and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed for her 1928 novel A Lantern in Her Hand, Bess Streeter Aldrich became one of the most widely read interpreters of the prairie pioneer experience. In 1935, she published her masterpiece, Spring Came on Forever, a novel of two Nebraska pioneer families from settlement to the 1930s. Elsewhere an artist of the romance, here Aldrich turns romance on its head. The heroine is Amalia Holmsdorfer, one of a band of German immigrants who settle on the prairie. From her late teens to her mid-eighties she confronts and defeats the forces of nature and society that discourage or ruin others. Her life might be a modest triumph but for one detail: she married the wrong man. Quickly paced and precisely drawn, this novel is Aldrich's greatest tribute to the complexity, humor, endurance, and intelligence of the people who settled the prairie. Whatever its sentiments, it has as many cutting edges as a buzz saw.

Book Synopsis Life in Christ by : William Robert West
Download or read book Life in Christ written by William Robert West and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you believe about souls? There are many very different doctrines taught in the world today concerning souls that are believed to be in all humans. By most a soul is believed to be something that is wholly apart from the person a soul is in; that a soul is something that is that is believed to be complete in its self without the person; it will live after the person it is in is dead; it is believed that a soul will exist forever without the person; it will never be dead; therefore, a soul cannot be resurrected from the dead. It is believed that a soul must live someplace forever, and it will live either in Heaven or Hell even if there is no resurrection. The doctrine of unconditional immortality of a deathless soul being in a person, and that soul leaving that person at the death of the person makes it impossible for Christ to have give His life to save that soul from death; if a soul had immortality it would already have life and could never not have life; all Christ could do is give it a reward or punish it.
Book Synopsis A Primer on the Book of Revelation by : Ted Noel
Download or read book A Primer on the Book of Revelation written by Ted Noel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelation is sooo complicated! Wait a minute! If a Jewish fisherman understood what his Rabbi showed him, then it shouldn't be hard for us, either. We just need his tools. Fortunately, God left them for us in the same place John found them: the Bible. This Primer uses the rest of the Bible to explain Revelation in plain language. We've banned the big words professors use. We've thrown out their multi-part sentences, and we don't waste time explaining why we disagree with somebody. Instead, we try to let the text speak for itself. When you read this Primer, you'll see that it was written for you with great respect for God's word. By the way, Revelation isn't that complicated. After all, it's the revealing of Jesus Christ.

Book Synopsis The Collected Stories of Mavis Gallant by : Mavis Gallant
Download or read book The Collected Stories of Mavis Gallant written by Mavis Gallant and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This generous collection of fifty-two stories, selected from across her prolific career by the author, includes a preface in which she discusses the sources of her art. A widely admired master of the short story, Mavis Gallant was a Canadian-born writer who lived in France and died in 2014 at the age of ninety-one. Her more than one hundred stories, most published in The New Yorker over five decades beginning in 1951, have influenced generations of writers and earned her comparisons to Anton Chekhov, Henry James, and George Eliot. She has been hailed by Michael Ondaatje as “one of the great story writers of our time.” With irony and an unfailing eye for the telling detail, Gallant weaves stories of spare complexity, often pushing the boundaries of the form in boldly unconventional directions. The settings in The Collected Stories range from Paris to Berlin to Switzerland, from the Italian Riviera to the Côte d’Azur, and her characters are almost all exiles of one sort or another, as she herself was for most of her expatriate life. The wit and precision of her prose, combined with her expansive view of humanity, provide a rare and deep reading pleasure. With breathtaking control and compression, Gallant delivers a whole life, a whole world, in each story.

Book Synopsis The Dying Grass by : William T. Vollmann
Download or read book The Dying Grass written by William T. Vollmann and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 1378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning author of Europe Central – a dazzling fictional account of the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians In this fifth installment in his acclaimed Seven Dreams series of novels examining the collisions between Native Americans and European colonizers, William T. Vollmann tells the story of the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians, with flashbacks to the Civil War. Defrauded and intimidated at every turn, the Nez Perces finally went on the warpath in 1877, subjecting the U.S. Army to its greatest defeat since Little Big Horn the previous year, as they fled from northeast Oregon across Montana to the Canadian border. Vollmann’s main character is not the legendary Chief Joseph but his pursuer, General Oliver Otis Howard, the brave, shy, tormented, devoutly Christian Civil War veteran. In this novel, we see him as commander, father, son, husband, friend, and killer. Teeming with many vivid characters on both sides of the conflict, and written in an original style in which the printed page works as a stage with multiple layers of foreground and background, The Dying Grass is another mesmerizing achievement from one of the most ambitious writers of our time.
