Book excerpt: This collection aims to provide a comprehensive survey of a highly significant part of the Christian Year: Ash Wednesday and Lent, Passiontide, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. Its contents span all musical periods of what is a marvellously rich area of church music and it contains much that is not widely available elsewhere under one cover. Ash Wednesday to Easter for Choirs includes a number of less familiar works together with new or recent arrangements of well-known tunes, such as Philip Ledger's 'This joyful Eastertide', Simon Lindley's 'Now the green blade riseth', and Bob Chilcott's setting of 'Were you there?'. Some of the anthems, for example Richard Shephard's 'Sing, my tongue' and Grayston Ives' 'Ride on', have been newly commissioned specifically for this collection, thus filling certain gaps. Wherever possible new practical performing editions of 16th-century repertoire have been prepared, reflecting current scholarship and including an English singing translation and, where, the original had none, a dynamic scheme. Such dynamics are the editors' suggestions only and may be freely ignored or adapted. Note values have in some instances been halved. Unaccompanied items include keyboard reductions for rehearsal.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten season, a period of spiritual reflection and renewal observed by Christians worldwide. It is a day of great significance in the Christian faith, as it symbolizes the beginning of a period of self-examination, penance, and sacrifice leading up to Easter Sunday. The observance of Ash Wednesday begins with the distribution of ashes on the forehead in the shape of a cross, reminding individuals of their own mortality and encouraging them to contemplate their sins. This powerful symbol serves as a reminder that all things come from dust and will return to dust, emphasizing the importance of humility, repentance, and reflection. In "Ash Wednesday: Everything You Need to Know About Ash Wednesday and Starting Lent," we explore the history, significance, and practices associated with this holy day. We delve into the spiritual practices that are often associated with Ash Wednesday, such as fasting, prayer, and meditation, and their role in fostering spiritual growth and renewal. We also examine the broader significance of the Lenten season, which is a time of sacrifice, self-discipline, and spiritual growth. We explore the practices and traditions associated with Lent, including the giving up of worldly pleasures and the focus on prayer, charity, and service to others. Whether you are a devout Christian seeking to deepen your faith or simply curious about the significance of this holy day, "Ash Wednesday: Everything You Need to Know About Ash Wednesday and Lent" is the perfect resource to help you understand and engage with this important observance. Gain a deeper understanding of the meaning behind the ashes, the liturgy of the Ash Wednesday service, and the spiritual practices that can help you grow and renew your faith during this sacred season. Book excerpt: Lent is known today as the 40-day period of prayer and fasting in preparation for the celebration of Easter, chosen to imitate the 40-day period of Christ's fasting in the desert before He began His public ministry. Commemoration of lent has ranged from a single day in the first century Church to 44 days (from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday) in the Roman Church. However, as early Christians were forbidden to fast and perform other forms of penance on Sunday, the six Sundays that fall within this period are not included in that count, leaving 38 days. By adding Good Friday and Holy Saturday before Easter, the total number of days in Lent is now observed to be 40 days. Tradition indicates that sometime during the 11th century, the distribution of ashes as a sign of penance (the sign of the cross placed on the forehead) was initiated on Wednesday (Ash Wednesday) before the first Sunday of Lent. This 40-day devotional follows Christ from the first time He is revealed in the Book of Genesis through the Gospel of Matthew. This is His Journey to the Cross.

Book excerpt: Many have called the psalms a ‘school of prayer’ and indeed St. Augustine in his Confessions wrote that the psalms could be a stepping stone to deeper conversation with God. These ancient words from Scripture mirror our own thoughts and emotions—celebration and praise, suffering and lament, gratitude and asking for help—as relevant today as when they were first sung in the Temple. Fr. Martin Shannon brings deep teaching as well as the personal encounter of someone who has chanted and studied the Psalms for years. Each reflection is on one psalm, offering a meditation on its meaning and how it connects to our lives, followed by a word from one of the ancient church fathers and a prayer. There is a reflection for each of the forty-seven days from Ash Wednesday to Easter that reflect the various twists and turns on the Lenten journey. Readers will discover the power of the psalms to inspire their own Lenten journey towards Easter.
