Book excerpt: During this report period, additional progress was made in accomplishing the tasks of the project. In particular, the computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent flows was further developed. The model was applied to the dispersion analysis of particles in a circular duct and the transport and deposition of particles in a recirculating region. A model for resuspension of particles from various surfaces in a gas flow is also being developed. The new model accounts for the surface adhesion, as well as the hydrodynamic forces and torques. In addition, the model includes the effect of surface roughness and the structure of near wall turbulent flow. Progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.

Book excerpt: The computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent flows was further developed and used to analyze the transport and dispersion of particles in a recirculating flow region. The model for resuspension of particles from surfaces in a gas flow is also further developed; it accounts for the surface adhesion as well as hydrodynamic forces and torques. It includes effects of the structure of near wall turbulent flows as well as surface roughness. In addition, a direct numerical simulation procedure for analyzing the particle removal process in turbulent gas flows is also developed. The sublayer model for evaluating the particle deposition in turbulent flows is being extended to include the effect of particle rebound. Further progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general goal of this project is to provide a fundamental understanding of deposition processes of flyash and pulverized coal particles in coal combustors and coal gasifiers. In the period of April 1 to June 30, 1996, further research progress was made. The computational model for simulating particle motions in turbulent flows was applied to the dispersion and deposition analysis. The study of particle transport and deposition in a circular duct was completed and the major findings are summarized. A detailed model for particle resuspension process in a gas flow is developed. The new model accounts for the surface adhesion, surface roughness, as well as the structure of near wall turbulent flows. The model also accounts for all the relevant hydrodynamic forces and torques exerted on the particle attached to a surface. Progress was also made in the experimental study of glass fiber transport and deposition in the aerosol wind tunnel.

Book Synopsis The Impact Of Ash Deposition On Coal Fired Plants by : Jim Williamson
Download or read book The Impact Of Ash Deposition On Coal Fired Plants written by Jim Williamson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 1103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal provides almost 40% of the world's electricity, and despite the understandable concern with respect to the environmental impact associated with coal use, forecasts from the International Energy Agency predict, that worldwide coal use will increase by up to 2% per annum until the year 2OlO. Faced with this increase, it is clearly important that the most efficient and environmentally acceptable clean coal technologies are available. This book is comprised of the proceedings of the Engineering Foundation Conference held in June 1993 in England. The objective of the conference was to present ideas on methods of predicting and reducing the effects of ash deposition in coal conversion systems, highlighting the problems experienced in industry, considering both utilities and industrial plants, and providing a view of the technology of coal ash deposition and its impact. Better techniques are needed to reduce the impact of ash deposition in coal fired plants, and these proceedings should form a reference document for anyone either experiencing slagging or actively engaged in trying to understand or eliminate the phenomenon.
Book Synopsis Combustion and Gasification of Coal by : A. Williams
Download or read book Combustion and Gasification of Coal written by A. Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incuding an overview of two of the most common uses of coal: combustion and gasification. First, it outlines problems and possible solutions, and then the nature of coal is described. The book goes on to describe the technical aspects of combustion of pulverized coal and the combustion mechanism of coal in fixed, moving, and fluidized beds. Industrial coal combustion applications are then outlined, together with other combustion applications, including co-firing, coal-water, slurries, and briquettes. Finally, gasification of coal, a possible major clean coal technology of the future, is discussed.
Book Synopsis A Mechanistic Investigation of Ash Deposition in Pulverized-coal and Biomass Combustion by : Shrinivas Sadashiv Lokare
Download or read book A Mechanistic Investigation of Ash Deposition in Pulverized-coal and Biomass Combustion written by Shrinivas Sadashiv Lokare and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation details the effects of fuel constituents on ash deposition through systematic experimental and theoretical analyses of fundamental particle experiments and a suite of fuels with widely varying inorganic contents and compositions. The experiments were carried out in the Multifuel Flow Reactor (MFR) at Brigham Young University. Fuels included several biomass fuels (straw, sawdust and mixtures of straw-sawdust with other additives such as Al(OH)3, CaCO3, etc.) and four commercially-used coals (Illinois#6, Powder River Basin--Caballo and Cordero, Blind Canyon, and Lignite--Beulah Zap). The data from the series of experiments quantitatively illustrate the effects of fuel properties, physical and/or chemical, on ash deposition rate mechanisms.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of coal for the production of energy is certainly not a new area of research. Many research works were carried out to improve the efficiency of industrial and domestic facilities. In the sixties, however, because of the availability and low cost of petroleum, coal consumption decreased and the research effort in this area was minimum. Meanwhile, the situation has totally changed. Considering the reserves of oil and the instability ofregions where they are located, it is becoming absolutely necessary to develop other sources of energy. The major alternative to oil appears to be coal, at least for the near future. Indeed, the reserves known today represent several centuries of energy consumption.!t is therefore becoming urgent to develop efficient and non polluting technologies to produce energy from coal. The main possibilities are : · liquefaction · gasification · directed combustion. Research and development efforts on liquefaction have been considerably reduced because of high cost of technologies involved and poor prospects for the next two decades. Research works on gasification are progressing; it is a promising approach. However, direct combustion either in pulverized coal furnaces or in fluidized beds is the more promising way of expanding rapidly the utilization of coal. These techniques are already used in some facilities but many environmental problems remain, slowing down their development.
Book Synopsis Impact of Mineral Impurities in Solid Fuel Combustion by : R. Gupta
Download or read book Impact of Mineral Impurities in Solid Fuel Combustion written by R. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-10-31 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the Engineering Foundation Conference on mineral matter in fuels held on November 2-7, 1997 in Kona, Hawaii. The conference is one of a continuing series that was initiated by the CEGB Mar- wood Engineering Laboratories in 1963. The conference was to be eventually organised by the Engineering Foundation as the need for multi-disciplinary work related to c- trolling ash effects in combustors became apparent. The conference covers both the science and the applications. The papers also present case histories, particularly for current fuel technologies, developments in advanced technologies for power generation and mathematical modelling of these processes. Developments since 1963 have been slow, but steady, due to the complexity of the chemical and physical processes involved. However, the research presented here displays great improvement in our understanding of the mechanisms by which mineral matter will influence fuel use. Steve Benson from EERC presented a review and current status of issues related to ash deposition in coal combustion and gasification. The application of new analytical tools, which have been detailed in the previous conferences, is presented. These include CCSEM, as well as new techniques for char- terising sintering of ash, such as TMA, image analysis, X-ray diffraction crystallography and thermal analysis. The new analytical techniques were extended to encompass widely differing fuels such as biomass. Ole H Larsen from ELSAM Denmark presented a review of these advanced techniques.
