Book excerpt: The main objective of this research investigation was the experimental determination of the effect of compressive loading on the fatigue response of graphite/epoxy lamiantes. The primary emphasis of the program was on the accumulation of a statistically significant data base. The data base was to be used for developing an analytical model with predictive capability to account for the effect of compressive loading. The test program included only unnotched coupons in a room temperature, laboratory air environment. The test program consisted of static tensile and compressive tests; tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue tests; and tensile and compressive residual strength tests of coupons tested either under tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue loading. The development of a large, statistically meaningful data base was accomplished. The general effect of compression on the fatigue response of a graphite/epoxy composite was determined. However, a general model with capability to account for compressive loading was not attempted. As an alternate, the concept of a fatigue threshold was postulated along with consideration of some substantiating data. Analysis of the data showed that due to the extent of data scatter, a model of the 'wear-out' or similar type would predict the need for unacceptably low stress levels to achieve the high probabilities of survival required for aircraft structures.

Download or read book Composite Materials Handbook-MIL 17, Volume III written by UsDeptOfDefense and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This standardization handbook has been developed and is being maintained as a joint effort of the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration. It provides guidelines and material properties for polymer (organic) and metal matrix composite materials. This handbook aims to provide a standard source of statistically-based mechanical property data, procedures, and overall materials guidelines for characterization of composite material systems. This volume provides methodologies and lessons learned for the design, manufacture, and analysis of composite structures and for utilization of the material data provided in Volume II consistent with the guidance provided in Volume I. It covers processes and effects of variability; quality control of production materials; design and analysis; structural behavior of joints and reliability; thick section composites; and supportability.

Download or read book Advanced Residual Strength Degradation Rate Modeling for Advanced Composite Structures written by K. N. Lauraitis and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first task of the last two tasks of a three-task program focusing on the study of relationship between damage propagation and residual strength of graphite/epoxy laminates. Specimens of two laminate types, a 32-ply quasi-isotropic and 24-ply 67%-0, containing a centered poorly drilled hole were evaluated in this study. Baseline static tension and compression tests were conducted at high and low strain rates and at elevated temperature.

Book excerpt: The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.

Download or read book The Effect of Compressive Loading on the Fatigue Lifetime of Graphite/Epoxy Laminates written by J. T. Ryder and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this research investigation was the effect of compressive loading on the fatigue response of graphite epoxy laminates as influenced by a circular hole and an aggressive environment. The investigation was undertake n in order to further characterize the behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates under fatigue loading. The primary emphasis of the program was on the accumulation of a statistically significant data base. Unnotched coupon properties of a quasi-isotropic and a 67% 0 degrees fiber laminate were investigated in a 82.2 degrees C (180 degrees F), 90% R.H. environment after prior conditioning in that environment. The interactional effects of absorbed moisture and fatigue loading on the fatigue lifetime of coupons containing a circular hole was investigated at room temperature and at 82.2 degrees C (180 degrees F), 90% R.H. using the quasi-isotropic laminate. The test program consisted of static tension and compression tests; tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue tests; and static tension and compression residual strength tests of coupons prior tested either under tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue loading. Book Synopsis Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Data by : R. E. Little
Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Data written by R. E. Little and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1981 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly assumed in analysing fatigue data that there is a definite functional relationship between life in number of cycles and stress level. However, as has been pointed out several times (1, 2), an examination of the data shows considerable scatter. Even with carefully prepared smooth specimens, all from the same heat of steel, treated in the same manner and tested in the same laboratory, a range of 2 to 1 in number of cycles for failure at the same stress level is normal (1) and a range of 10 to 1 is not unusual (2). If the specimens are tested by different laboratories, slightly varying techniques will introduce further scatter (3).
