It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning a Cause, World War Stories Lest We Forget, the first volume of World War stories, gave an outline of the struggle up to the time of the signing of the armistice, November 1918, and contained in general, chronological order most of the stories that to children from ten to sixteen years of age would be' of greatest interest, and give the clearest understanding of the titanic contest. This, the second volume of the same series, contains the stories of the war of the character described, that were not included in Lest We Forget, stories of the United States naval heroes, of the Americans landed in France, of the concluding events of the war, of the visit of President Wilson to Europe, and of the Peace Conference. In a word, emphasis is placed upon America's part in the struggle. This volume should be of even greater interest to American children than the first, for it tells the story of America's greatest achievement, of a nation under taking a tremendous and terrible task not for material gain, but for an ideal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Johnny Comes Marching Home The Peak of the Load were edited, no one over here had any hope that the order cease firing would be given on the western front before the spring of 1919. Otherwise that book would have been held back until after the armistice. It had been my intention when the fighting on this front ended so prematurely, to publish none of the letters written to the States after the cessation of hostilities, for the reason that there was no longer any war activity here, and the war activity had been their sole excuse. Here, the country side settled down at once to an outward calm rarely disturbed by anything in the least warlike, -that is, anything which it seemed to me could make the smallest appeal to even the friends old and new, who had received three books with such touching and outspoken sympathy, and whose whole thought, I was convinced, was al ready turned to larger events unrolling in other places, beside which our simple life could make no call. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Memories Here it is - a little book which reflects upon every page the intimate heart-life of the American boy in France, during the World War - what he saw and felt and thought and did, not only in the great crises of battle; but on the march and in the camp - setting forth the first impressions made upon a soldier's mind, under foreign skies, at the cannon 's mouth, and revealing the fact that everywhere and always his thoughts were of the dear ones at home, thousands of miles across the seas. It is like a mirror in its faithful reproduction of the simpler elements which enter into vast and splen did scenes. We have heard much of general move ments; of grand climaxes; of superb exhibitions of man-power, in rthe aggregate; of millions, upon one side, confronting millions upon another; and so vast has been the picture presented to our minds that we have utterly failed to grasp it, except in its out standing characteristics. We have heard too little of the human side of the great wan - too little ofthe things which carry a direct appeal to the deep heart of America. We have been hungry for the minor details - for the smaller threads for the frag mentary episodes and incidents - for the rare and delicate and tender touches of color which are need ed to complete the picture, and to give it beauty, pathos, power and charm. Ever since, in the lone solitudes of the night, we first began to wonder where our boys were, on the other side - if they were still safe - we have longed for such a book; and so far as our personal observa tion extends it is the very first book of this character to appear in print, on either side of the water. The experiences of one soldier are not unlike those of another; and every fond parent who reads this book will feel that his or her boy is writing, though it may be that his spirit now looks down upon them from the unseen halls of the Great Valhalla. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Army Sketch Book: An Artist's Story of the War We descended the hill to the river, and crossing on the pontoons, were soon on our way towards the front. We passed through the wagon-camps on a flat near the river, and ascending a gentle slope were soon in the dense woods beyond. Darkness had now fallen, and the din of the conflict increased, though we concluded that the enemy's advance had been checked, as the reports of firing came no nearer. Sounds rose and fell as the opposing forces changed position, coming clearly and distinctly from a wooded ridge but with muffled tone from the valleys. Suddenly there came a burst of artillery, and a tremendous roar continued for one hour. Then word was received that the enemy's advance had been checked. Suddenly we met straggling parties of demoralized troops hurrying towards the rear, and found on inquiry that the Eleventh Corps, holding the right flank of our army, had been surprised and put to rout by Stonewall Jackson, who had been making one of his famous forced marches for the purpose. These men were panic-stricken, rushing about at random with no directness of movement, their only thought being to get away from the bullets. Guards were thrown out on both sides of the road to put an end to the disgraceful confusion, and when the way was cleared we pushed forward toward the firing. I shall never forget the scene at this point, at nine o'clock. Fires were blazing on every side, which, with the pine trees that had been ignited, so lit up the road that objects were as discernible as in the day; and surging through it all was a 'mass of earnest, determined men who were intent only on reaching the line of battle where they could be of service to their struggling comrades. Marching hurriedly forward, they soon came to a road leading from Ely's Ford to Chancellorsville, and deploying to right and left the lines were very shortly in such a position that the damage done by Jackson's masterly surprise was almost made good, although a last desperate attempt was made at eleven o'clock to take pos session of a plateau surrounding the Chancellorsville House. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War to Date: March 1, 1900 The numberless publications on the subject of the War, a welcome might conceivably await just one more - only a little one - which should enable the reader with a minimum of intellectual effort to form_a connected idea of the causes which led up to the terrible struggle now raging in South Africa, and the effects it has so far produced. Historically speaking no attempt has been made to do more than portray in outline the main characters and events which have figured upon the stage of Boer politics from the time of the Great Trek to the present day, and briefly sketch the varying scenes which have unfortunately culminated in the climax of war. The time i'or exhaustive treatment of the whole question is not yet. A book of this nature is obviously to a great extent a thing of shreds.
