Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during the British rule in the Naga Hills and the backdrop of World War I and World War II, As Honest as the Day is Long tells the true but inspiring life story of Reverend Phandeo in a compelling fictional style. Orphaned as a child, left as a young boy in an abandoned hut to die and later sent off to a faraway land to make a life for himself, he grew up to become one of the pioneer Pastors of the first Baptist Church in his village, Okotso, Lotha country, and served with honesty and integrity till the end of his life. The ancient Nagas practiced human headhunting and spirit worship. After the resident American Baptist Missionaries sowed the seeds of the Gospel and left Lotha country, the village needed faithful leaders. Armed with the Gospel, Rev. Phandeo stood in the gap to transform Okotso from the darkness of blind beliefs and pagan practices. This book beautifully captures the life story of Rev. Phandeo and the legacy he left behind.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Scientific Americans, Susan Branson explores the place of science and technology in American efforts to achieve cultural independence from Europe and America's nation building in the early republic and antebellum eras. This engaging tour of scientific education and practices among ordinary citizens charts the development of nationalism and national identity alongside roads, rails, and machines. Scientific Americans shows how informal scientific education provided by almanacs, public lectures, and demonstrations, along with the financial encouragement of early scientific societies, generated an enthusiasm for the application of science and technology to civic, commercial, and domestic improvements. Not only that: Americans were excited, awed, and intrigued with the practicality of inventions. Bringing together scientific research and popular wonder, Branson charts how everything from mechanical clocks to steam engines informed the creation and expansion of the American nation. From the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations to the fate of the Amistad captives, Scientific Americans shows how the promotion and celebration of discoveries, inventions, and technologies articulated Americans' earliest ambitions, as well as prejudices, throughout the first American century.

Book excerpt: Adrian Bleese spent twelve years flying on police helicopters and attended almost 3,000 incidents as one of only a handful of civilian Air Observers working anywhere in the world. In Above The Law he recounts the most interesting, difficult, emotionally charged, funny and downright baffling highlights of his career working for Suffolk Constabulary and the National Police Air Service. The events he was involved in were often life and death or, at the very least, life-changing for those involved. From his observer's perspective, he describes them with real compassion. While he does not shy away from tackling some of the darker sides of policing such as traffic accidents, missing persons and armed crime, this book is, above all, about helping people, about a passion for flying and for the countryside and, perhaps more than anything, about hope.

Book excerpt: On the hypothesis that we are all born to be hunters and that life is one big hunting trip, then my first book, Planting Seeds: the Early Years could be equated to Hunting for Dummies. In Book 2, Laying Down Roots: the Intermediate Years my hunts unfold as I alternate from pursuing big game such as a life partner, a career, self-esteem and meaningfulness, to small game like rest areas, a runners high, vacations or fun, while in search of my ultimate prey - self-actualization. In my quest I will be periodically called upon to pull into a service station to rebalance and realign myself and then gas up before proceeding. There will be times when I push myself to exhaustion, on the brink of a complete breakdown, only to find a saving fork in the road. When faced with adversity will I choose flight, fight, freeze or something else? Youll need to read to find out.

But how well do we concisely communicate our messages and feelings? There are certain drawbacks to new-age technologies, especially due to the need for conciseness. The written word has always carried the meaning and essence of thoughts and feelings that we strive to convey. Similes, metaphors, and sayings from regional areas and time periods specifically carry more meanings than the mere word itself. The 2,300 idioms or sayings in this book convey a meaning that connects generation to generation in the south of our country. Meet the family members that communicated daily and shared their stories using this unique language that is colorful and historical. My aunt, Arlie Wilder, used to say that she hated to see a woman grinning and laughing out loud with her mouth open like “Jenny eatin’ saw briars.” I hope you find yourself laughing like that as you read.
