Book excerpt: Investiga o problema da deficiencia, buscando confrontar a condicao de ser "deficiente" com a de "ser pessoa portadora de deficiencia". Parte de uma caracterizacao socio-demografica de uma populacao de portadores de deficiencia fisica, construida com base nas referencias desta mesma populacao, utilizando como instrumento para a coleta de dados, um questionario aplicado pelo pesquisador em situacao de entrevista. Procura identificar, atraves destas referencias, as dificuldades enfrentadas por esta populacao. Da discussao do conceito de "deficiencia" e "deficiente" a discussao da natureza de suas dificuldades, verifica que as pessoas portadoras de deficiencia sao, afinal, nao apenas discriminadas, mas privadas do direito de ser pessoa devido a presenca de uma diferenca que e negativamente traduzida por deficiencia. Dado o significado social de "ser fisicamente diferente" acaba-se reduzindo a pessoa que apresenta uma diferenca fisica, ao seu atributo, nomeando-a "deficiente". Contudo, a pesquisa de aspectos da realidade que vivem as pessoas assim nomeadas, mostra dificuldades de acesso ao servico de saude, a escola, a um emprego, a um transporte publico e as proprias vias publicas, por inadequacoes socialmente situadas, que apontam para uma concepcao de deficiencia socialmente construida. Conclui pela necessidade de rever as concepcoes e acoes frente as pessoas portadoras de deficiencia, acreditando que as solucoes de suas dificuldades nao podem ser alcancadas fora do proprio contexto social que ajudou a gera-las (AU).
