Book excerpt: This book comprises the proceedings of the first meeting of the Internatio nal Society for Corneal Research, held in Kyoto on May 12 and 13, 1978, on the occasion of the International Congress of Ophthalmology. The Society was founded by Dr. Stuart I. Brown (USA), who has to be congratulated very sincerely for this idea. The cornea, window of the eye, becomes, indeed, more and more important and its diseases more and more frequent. Consequently, cornea research is of the greatest necessity not only to cure but also to prevent the various disorders of the membrane. The scientific program of the meeting, established by Dr. Brown, was outstanding. The limiting membranes, the epithelium as well as the endo thelium, the stroma, the corneal transplantation, as well as the graft rejec tion, the inflammations as well as the immunological aspects, were discussed by experts in the field. The meeting, which was conducted by Professor Motokazu Itoi, honorary Chairman, and successfully organized by his Japanese colleagues, Professor Nakajima, Professor Mishima and their staff, was as interesting as fruitful and left in our mind the best memory. I am convinced that the ophthalmologists will take a great interest in reading the various papers, which bring the latest advances in corneal patho logy. Prof. Jules Franyois President of the International Council of Ophthalmology.

Book excerpt: Myopia is the most common optical disorder in the world, and is on the rise in all parts of the world. The impact of myopia is evident as the driving force in the development of refractive surgery and of the eye glass and contact lens industries. Clearly, it is a lifestyle issue as well as a childhood disease that involves an unresolved problem in genetics. In Singapore (where myopia has reached the highest rates in the world) as well as in Taiwan and Japan, the affected group has developed greater degrees of myopia, leading to additional secondary effects on vision including blindness. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of myopia. It is aimed at ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, scientists and pharmaceutical companies. The topics are uniquely treated in that they cover research at the laboratory bench as well as clinical applications. By maintaining a high level of research activity, future generations may be able to forego optical aids altogether.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistically the most performed and listened to contemporary composer in the world, Arvo Pärt is a musical and cultural phenomenon. This book is an essential resource for anyone interested in his extraordinarily innovative and uniquely appealing music. Andrew Shenton surveys the full scope of Pärt's oeuvre, providing context and chronological continuity while concentrating in particular on his text-based music, analysing and describing individual pieces and techniques such as tintinnabulation. The book also explores the spiritual and theological contexts of Part's creativity, and the challenges of performing his work. This volume is the definitive guide for readers looking to engage with the form, content, and context of Pärt's compositions, as Shenton situates Pärt in the narrative of metamodernism and suggests new ways of understanding this unique and beautiful music.

Book excerpt: Time after time, people turn to music when coping with traumatic life events. Music can help process emotions, interpret memories, and create a sense of collective identity. In Performing Pain, author Maria Cizmic focuses on the late 20th century in Eastern Europe as she uncovers music's relationships to trauma and grief. The 1970s and 1980s witnessed a cultural preoccupation in this region with the meanings of historical suffering, particularly surrounding the Second World War and the Stalinist era. Journalists, historians, writers, artists, and filmmakers frequently negotiated themes related to pain and memory, truth and history, morality and spirituality during glasnost and the years leading up to it. Performing Pain considers how works by composers Alfred Schnittke, Galina Ustvolskaya, Arvo Part, and Henryk Gorecki musically address contemporary concerns regarding history and suffering through composition, performance, and reception.Taking theoretical cues from psychology, sociology, and literary and cultural studies, Cizmic offers a set of hermeneutic essays that demonstrate the ways in which people employ music in order to make sense of historical traumas and losses. Seemingly postmodern compositional choices--such as quotation, fragmentation, and stasis--create musical analogies to psychological and emotional responses to trauma and grief, and the physical realities of their embodied performance focus attention on the ethics of pain and representation. Furthermore, as film music, these works participate in contemporary debates regarding memory and trauma. A comprehensive and innovative study, Performing Pain will fascinate scholars interested in the music of Eastern Europe and in aesthetic articulations of suffering.

The book discusses tumor promoters and genotoxic chemicals in short-term testing for carcinogenicity, as well as the significance of preneoplastic liver lesions in experimental animals. The text also describes the factors known to be associated with increased risk of liver neoplasia as a human disease, and the extent to which it is known that the same factors have a similar effect in laboratory animals. Neurobehavioral toxicology; immunotoxicology; and the endocrine system as the target in experimental toxicology are also considered. The book further tackles the uses of gamma-glutamyltransferase in experimental toxicology, as well as the predictive value of ocular irritation tests. Toxicologists, biochemists, pathologists, and those involved in preventive medicine and community health will find the text invaluable.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Music and Medievalism provides a snapshot of the diverse ways in which medievalism--the retrospective immersion in the images, sounds, narratives, and ideologies of the European Middle Ages--powerfully transforms many of the varied musical traditions of the last two centuries. Thirty-three chapters from an international group of scholars explore topics ranging from the representation of the Middle Ages in nineteenth-century opera to medievalism in contemporary video game music, thereby connecting disparate musical forms across typical musicological boundaries of chronology and geography. While some chapters focus on key medievalist works such as Orff's Carmina Burana or Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, others explore medievalism in the oeuvre of a single composer (e.g. Richard Wagner or Arvo Prt) or musical group (e.g. Led Zeppelin). The topics of the individual chapters include both well-known works such as John Boorman's film Excalibur and also less familiar examples such as Eduard Lalo's Le Roi d'Ys. The authors of the chapters approach their material from a wide array of disciplinary perspectives, including historical musicology, popular music studies, music theory, and film studies, examining the intersections of medievalism with nationalism, romanticism, ideology, nature, feminism, or spiritualism. Taken together, the contents of the Handbook develop new critical insights that venture outside traditional methodological constraints and provide a capstone and point of departure for future scholarship on music and medievalism.
